1 And thou, take thou up a lamentation for the princes of Israel, 2 and say, What was thy mother? A lioness: she lay down among lions, she nourished her whelps in the midst of the young lions. 3 And she brought up one of her whelps; it became a young lion, and he learned to catch the prey; he devoured men. 4 And the nations heard of him; he was taken in their pit, and they brought him with nose-rings into the land of Egypt. 5 And when she saw that she had waited and her hope was lost, she took another of her whelps, and made him a young lion. 6 And he went up and down among the lions; he became a young lion, and learned to catch the prey; he devoured men. 7 And he knew their desolate palaces, and he laid waste their cities, so that the land was desolate, and all it contained, by the noise of his roaring. 8 Then the nations set against him on every side from the provinces, and spread their net over him; he was taken in their pit. 9 And they put him in a cage with nose-rings, and brought him to the king of Babylon; they brought him into strongholds, that his voice should no more be heard upon the mountains of Israel.

10 Thy mother was as a vine, in thy rest, planted by the waters: it was fruitful and full of branches by reason of many waters. 11 And it had strong rods for sceptres of them that bear rule, and its stature was exalted between the thick boughs; and it was conspicuous by its height with the multitude of its branches. 12 But it was plucked up in fury, it was cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up its fruit; its strong rods were broken and withered; the fire consumed them. 13 And now it is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and thirsty ground: 14 and a fire is gone out of a rod of its branches, which hath devoured its fruit; so that it hath no strong rod to be a sceptre for ruling. This is a lamentation, and shall be for a lamentation.

Stătea culcată cu leii și își creștea puii în mijlocul puilor de lei. 3 A crescut pe unul din puii ei, care s-a făcut un leuț*Vers. 6.2 Împ. 23:31,32. învățat să sfâșie prada și a mâncat oameni. 4 Neamurile au făcut o prinsoare împotriva lui și a fost prins în groapa lor; i-au pus un belciug în nări și l-au dus în țara Egiptului*2 Împ. 23:33.2 Cron. 36:4.Ier. 22:11,12.. 5 Leoaica, dacă a văzut că degeaba îl aștepta și că s-a înșelat în nădejdea ei, a luat un alt*2 Împ. 23:34. pui și l-a făcut leuț. 6 El a*Ier. 22:13-17. umblat cu leii, s-a făcut leuț*Vers. 3., a învățat să sfâșie prada și a mâncat oameni. 7 A năvălit în palatele lor și le-a nimicit cetățile; așa că țara, cu tot ce se află în ea, s-a îngrozit de mugetul răcnetelor lui. 8 Dar împotriva lui s-au înșiruit neamurile*2 Împ. 24:2. din toate ținuturile de primprejur. I-au întins lațuri și a fost prins*Vers. 4. în groapa lor. 9 I-au pus un belciug în nări, l-au pus într-o cușcă și l-au dus*2 Cron. 36:6.Ier. 22:18. la împăratul Babilonului, apoi l-au dus într-o cetățuie, ca să nu i se mai audă glasul pe munții*Cap. 6:2. lui Israel. 10 Mamă-ta, ca și tine*Cap. 17:6., era ca o vie sădită lângă ape. Era roditoare*Deut. 8:7,8,9. și încărcată de mlădițe din pricina belșugului apelor. 11 Ramurile ei erau așa de tari, că se puteau face toiege de cârmuitori din ele; prin înălțimea ei*Cap. 31:3.Dan. 4:11. întrecea ramurile stufoase și atrăgea privirile cu înălțimea ei și prin mulțimea mlădițelor ei. 12 Dar a fost smulsă cu mânie și aruncată la pământ; vântul*Cap. 17:10.Osea 13:15. de răsărit i-a uscat rodul; mlădițele ei cele puternice au fost rupte, s-au uscat și le-a mâncat focul. 13 Și acum este sădită în pustie, într-un pământ uscat și fără apă. 14 Din mlădițele ei a ieșit*Jud. 9:15.2 Împ. 24:20. Cap. 17:18. foc și i-a mâncat rodul; așa că nu mai are ramuri tari, bune pentru un toiag de cârmuitor.’ Aceasta-i o cântare de jale și va sluji drept cântare de jale*Plâng. 4:20.."
