1 Provérbios de Salomão, filho de David, rei de Israel, 2 destinados a dar a conhecer a sabedoria, dar educação e ensinar também a compreender palavras cheias de profundo sentido. 3 Para que se tenha um entendimento esclarecido e para que se seja justo, reto, íntegro na vida. 4 Destinam-se ainda a formar e a enriquecer a mente de pessoas simples e a dar capacidade de compreensão aos jovens. 5 Quanto aos que têm instrução, que aprofundem a sabedoria; 6 tornem-se hábeis na exploração do significado dos ditos e enigmas dos sábios.

7 O temor do Senhor é o princípio de todo o conhecimento; só os loucos recusam ser ensinados.

8 Ouve o teu pai e a tua mãe e não desprezes o que te ensinarem. 9 Porque o que aprenderes com eles será como um diadema na tua cabeça e um colar no teu pescoço.

10 Meu filho, se pecadores quiserem aliciar-te, nunca lhes cedas! 11 Se te disserem: "Vem connosco!", volta-lhes as costas. Dir-te-ão: "Vamos lá! A gente, sem ninguém saber, rouba este aqui, mata aquele inocente além; 12 apanhamo-los vivos e mandamo-los inteirinhos para a cova! 13 Ficará para nós o belo quinhão que cá deixarem e assim encheremos os bolsos! 14 Tiramos à sorte e tu terás a tua parte connosco."

15 Não, meu filho! Não vás com eles! Desvia-te de gente semelhante! 16 Porque o seu modo de vida é o crime; são especialistas no assassínio. 17 Apesar de até uma ave saber desviar-se, quando lhe preparam uma armadilha, 18 estas pessoas deixam-se apanhar pelas suas próprias ciladas. 19 Este é o destino de todo aquele que vive da rapina, e esta levá-lo-á à violência e à morte.

20 A sabedoria clama, em voz bem alta, pelas ruas da cidade e nos cruzamentos; 21 sobre os muros eleva a sua voz, diante das portas da cidade, na frente de todos: 22 "Ó gente insensata! Até quando continuarão a viver contentes com a loucura? Até quando continuarão a desprezar a sabedoria e a contestar a evidência dos factos? 23 Venham ouvir e convençam-se com os meus argumentos. Derramarei sobre vocês um espírito de sabedoria e dar-vos-ei a conhecer a minha mensagem.

24 Tantas vezes vos chamei e não quiseram vir; insisti convosco, estendendo a mão, mas ninguém me deu atenção. 25 Rejeitaram os meus conselhos; não fizeram caso da minha repreensão. 26 Por isso, quando se encontrarem em dificuldades, será a minha vez de me rir e de me divertir com os vossos medos. 27 Quando esses medos vos sobrevierem, como uma tenebrosa tempestade, quando estiverem submergidos pela angústia e pelo pânico, 28 então, ao gritarem pela minha ajuda, não responderei; embora me procurem ansiosamente, não me acharão. 29 Porque preferiram desprezar a sabedoria e rejeitaram o temor do Senhor. 30 Voltaram-me as costas e desprezaram o meu juízo. 31 Essa é a razão por que terão de vir a comer o fruto amargo da vossa própria conduta e terão de fartar-se com as consequências desastrosas das vossas opções. 32 Porque é pela sua imprudência que a gente insensata morrerá; a segurança dos doidos matá-los-á. 33 Mas todos os que me derem ouvidos viverão em paz e segurança, e sem medo."

10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. 11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: 12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: 13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: 14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: 15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: 16 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. 17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.*1.17 in the…: Heb. in the eyes of every thing that hath a wing 18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives. 19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

20 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:*1.20 Wisdom: Heb. Wisdoms, that is, Excellent wisdom 21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying, 22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? 23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; 25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; 27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. 28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: 29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: 30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. 31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. 32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.*1.32 turning…: or, ease of the simple 33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
