1 And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the land of the South, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur; and he sojourned in Gerar. 2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah. 3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream of the night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, because of the woman whom thou hast taken; for she is a man’s wife. 4 Now Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay even a righteous nation? 5 Said he not himself unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and the innocency of my hands have I done this. 6 And God said unto him in the dream, Yea, I know that in the integrity of thy heart thou hast done this, and I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her. 7 Now therefore restore the man’s wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.

8 And Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid. 9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and wherein have I sinned against thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done. 10 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing? 11 And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife’s sake. 12 And moreover she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife: 13 and it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt show unto me: at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother. 14 And Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and men-servants and women-servants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife. 15 And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee. 16 And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, it is for thee a covering of the eyes to all that are with thee; and in respect of all thou art righted. 17 And Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maid-servants; and they bare children. 18 For Jehovah had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.

S-a arătat noaptea în vis*Iov 33:15. lui Abimelec și i-a zis: „Iată*Vers. 7., ai să mori din pricina femeii pe care ai luat-o, căci este nevasta unui bărbat." 4 Abimelec, care nu se apropiase de ea, a răspuns: „Doamne*Cap. 18:23;20:18., vei omorî Tu oare chiar și un neam nevinovat? 5 Nu mi-a spus el că este soră-sa? Și n-a zis ea însăși că el este frate-său? Eu am lucrat cu inimă curată*2 Împ. 20:3.2 Cor. 1:12. și cu mâini nevinovate." 6 Dumnezeu i-a zis în vis: „Știu și Eu că ai lucrat cu inimă curată, de aceea te-am*Cap. 31:7;35:5.Exod 34:24.1 Sam. 25:26,34. și ferit să păcătuiești împotriva*Cap. 39:9.Lev. 6:2.Ps. 51:4. Mea. Iată de ce n-am îngăduit să te atingi de ea. 7 Acum, dă omului nevasta înapoi, căci*1 Sam. 7:5.2 Împ. 5:11.Iov 42:8.Iac. 5:14,15.1 Ioan 5:16. el este proroc. Se va ruga pentru tine și vei trăi. Dar, dacă n-o dai înapoi, să știi*Cap. 2:17. că vei muri negreșit, tu și tot*Num. 16:32,33. ce-i al tău." 8 Abimelec s-a sculat dis-de-dimineață, a chemat pe toți slujitorii săi și le-a spus tot ce se întâmplase. Și oamenii aceia au fost cuprinși de o mare spaimă. 9 Abimelec a chemat și pe Avraam și i-a zis: „Ce ne-ai făcut? Și cu ce am păcătuit eu împotriva ta, de ai făcut să vină*Cap. 26:10.Exod 32:21.Ios. 7:25. peste mine și peste împărăția mea un păcat atât de mare? Ai făcut față de mine lucruri care nu trebuiau*Cap. 34:7. nicidecum făcute." 10 Și Abimelec a zis lui Avraam: „Ce ai văzut de ai făcut lucrul acesta?" 11 Avraam a răspuns: „Îmi ziceam că, fără îndoială, nu-i nicio frică de Dumnezeu*Cap. 42:18.Ps. 36:1.Prov. 16:6. în țara aceasta și că au să mă omoare*Cap. 12:12;26:7. din pricina nevestei mele. 12 De altfel, este adevărat că este*Cap. 11:29. sora mea, fiica tatălui meu; numai că nu-i fiica mamei mele și a ajuns să-mi fie nevastă. 13 Când m-a scos Dumnezeu*Cap. 12:1,9.Evr. 11:8. din casa tatălui meu, am zis Sarei: ‘Iată hatârul pe care ai să mi-l faci: în toate locurile unde vom merge, spune*Cap. 12:13. despre mine că sunt fratele tău.’" 14 Abimelec a luat*Cap. 12:16. oi și boi, robi și roabe și le-a dat lui Avraam și i-a dat înapoi și pe Sara, nevastă-sa. 15 Abimelec a zis: „Iată, țara*Cap. 13:9. mea este înaintea ta; locuiește unde-ți va plăcea." 16 Și Sarei i-a zis: „Iată, dau fratelui*Vers. 5. tău o mie de arginți; aceasta*Cap. 26:11. să-ți fie o dovadă*Cap. 24:65. de cinste față de toți cei ce sunt cu tine, așa că înaintea tuturor vei fi fără vină." 17 Avraam*Iov 42:9,10. s-a rugat lui Dumnezeu, și Dumnezeu a însănătoșit pe Abimelec, pe nevasta și roabele lui, așa că au putut să nască. 18 Fiindcă Domnul încuiase*Cap. 12:17. pântecele tuturor femeilor din casa lui Abimelec din pricina Sarei, nevasta lui Avraam.
