1 Flee for safety, ye children of Benjamin, out of the midst of Jerusalem, and blow the trumpet in Tekoa, and raise up a signal on Beth-haccherem; for evil looketh forth from the north, and a great destruction. 2 The comely and delicate one, the daughter of Zion, will I cut off. 3 Shepherds with their flocks shall come unto her; they shall pitch their tents against her round about; they shall feed every one in his place. 4 Prepare ye war against her; arise, and let us go up at noon. Woe unto us! for the day declineth, for the shadows of the evening are stretched out. 5 Arise, and let us go up by night, and let us destroy her palaces. 6 For thus hath Jehovah of hosts said, Hew ye down trees, and cast up a mound against Jerusalem: this is the city to be visited; she is wholly oppression in the midst of her. 7 As a well casteth forth its waters, so she casteth forth her wickedness: violence and destruction is heard in her; before me continually is sickness and wounds. 8 Be thou instructed, O Jerusalem, lest my soul be alienated from thee; lest I make thee a desolation, a land not inhabited.

9 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, They shall thoroughly glean the remnant of Israel as a vine: turn again thy hand as a grape-gatherer into the baskets. 10 To whom shall I speak and testify, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of Jehovah is become unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it. 11 Therefore I am full of the wrath of Jehovah; I am weary with holding in: pour it out upon the children in the street, and upon the assembly of young men together; for even the husband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with him that is full of days. 12 And their houses shall be turned unto others, their fields and their wives together; for I will stretch out my hand upon the inhabitants of the land, saith Jehovah. 13 For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely. 14 They have healed also the hurt of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace. 15 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall; at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith Jehovah.

16 Thus saith Jehovah, Stand ye in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way; and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls: but they said, We will not walk therein. 17 And I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet; but they said, We will not hearken. 18 Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, O congregation, what is among them. 19 Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words; and as for my law, they have rejected it. 20 To what purpose cometh there to me frankincense from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt-offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices pleasing unto me. 21 Therefore thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will lay stumbling-blocks before this people; and the fathers and the sons together shall stumble against them; the neighbor and his friend shall perish.

22 Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, a people cometh from the north country; and a great nation shall be stirred up from the uttermost parts of the earth. 23 They lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea, and they ride upon horses, every one set in array, as a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Zion. 24 We have heard the report thereof; our hands wax feeble: anguish hath taken hold of us, and pangs as of a woman in travail. 25 Go not forth into the field, nor walk by the way; for the sword of the enemy, and terror, are on every side. 26 O daughter of my people, gird thee with sackcloth, and wallow thyself in ashes: make thee mourning, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation; for the destroyer shall suddenly come upon us.

27 I have made thee a trier and a fortress among my people; that thou mayest know and try their way. 28 They are all grievous revolters, going about with slanders; they are brass and iron: they all of them deal corruptly. 29 The bellows blow fiercely; the lead is consumed of the fire: in vain do they go on refining; for the wicked are not plucked away. 30 Refuse silver shall men call them, because Jehovah hath rejected them.

Căci de la miazănoapte se vede venind o nenorocire*Cap. 1:14;4:6. și un mare prăpăd. 2 Pe frumoasa și subțirica fiică a Sionului o nimicesc! 3 La ea vin păstorii cu turmele lor, își întind corturile*2 Împ. 25:1,4. Cap. 4:17. în jurul ei și își paște fiecare partea lui." 4 „Pregătiți-vă*Cap. 51:27.Ioel 3:9. s-o bateți! Haidem! Să ne suim ziua-n amiaza*Cap. 15:8. mare!… Vai de noi, căci ziua scade și umbrele de seară se lungesc. 5 Haidem să ne suim noaptea! Și să-i dărâmăm casele împărătești!" 6 Căci așa vorbește Domnul oștirilor: „Tăiați copaci și ridicați șanțuri împotriva Ierusalimului! Aceasta este cetatea care trebuie pedepsită, căci în mijlocul ei este numai apăsare. 7 Cum țâșnesc apele dintr-o fântână*Is. 57:20., așa țâșnește răutatea ei din ea; nu se aude în ea decât silnicie*Ps. 55:9-11. Cap. 20:8.Ezec. 7:11,23. și prăpăd; durerea și rănile Îmi izbesc fără curmare privirile. 8 Ia învățătură, Ierusalime, ca nu cumva să Mă depărtez*Ezec. 23:18.Osea 9:12. de tine și să fac din tine un pustiu, o țară nelocuită!" 9 Așa vorbește Domnul oștirilor: „Vor culege rămășițele lui Israel cum se culeg ciorchinele rămase dintr-o vie. Puneți din nou mâna pe ea, ca și culegătorul pe mlădițe." 10 Cui să vorbesc și pe cine să iau martor ca să m-asculte? Urechea lor*Cap. 7:26.Fapte 7:51.Exod 6:12. este netăiată împrejur și nu sunt în stare să ia aminte. Iată*Cap. 20:8., Cuvântul Domnului este o ocară pentru ei și nu le place de el. 11 Eu sunt așa de plin*Cap. 20:9. de mânia Domnului, că n-o pot opri. „Toarn-o peste*Cap. 9:21. copilul de pe uliță și peste adunările tinerilor. Căci și bărbatul, și nevasta vor fi prinși, și bătrânul, și cel încărcat de zile. 12 Casele*Deut. 28:30. Cap. 8:10. lor vor trece în stăpânirea altora, ogoarele și nevestele lor, de asemenea, când Îmi voi întinde mâna asupra locuitorilor țării", zice Domnul. 13 „Căci de la cel mai mic până la cel mai mare, toți sunt lacomi de*Is. 56:11. Cap. 8:10;14:18;23:11.Mica 3:5,11. câștig; de la proroc până la preot, toți înșală. 14 Leagă în chip ușuratic*Cap. 8:11.Ezec. 13:10. rana fiicei poporului Meu, zicând*Cap. 4:10;14:13;23:17.: ‘Pace! Pace!’ Și totuși nu este pace! 15 Sunt dați de rușine*Cap. 3:3;8:12., căci săvârșesc urâciuni, și totuși nu roșesc și nu știu de rușine. De aceea vor cădea împreună cu cei ce cad, vor fi răsturnați când îi voi pedepsi", zice Domnul. 16 Așa vorbește Domnul: „Stați în drumuri, uitați-vă și întrebați care sunt cărările cele vechi*Is. 8:20. Cap. 18:15.Mal. 4:4.Luca 16:29., care este calea cea bună: umblați pe ea, și veți găsi*Mat. 11:29. odihnă pentru sufletele voastre!" Dar ei răspund: „Nu vrem să umblăm pe ele!" 17 „Am pus niște străjeri peste voi: ‘Fiți cu luare aminte la sunetul trâmbiței!’" Dar ei răspund: „Nu vrem să fim cu luare aminte*Is. 21:11;58:1. Cap. 25:4.Ezec. 3:17.Hab. 2:1.!" 18 „De aceea, ascultați, neamuri, și luați seama la ce li se va întâmpla, adunare a popoarelor! 19 Ascultă*Is. 1:2. și tu, pământule! Iată, voi aduce peste poporul acesta o nenorocire care va fi rodul*Prov. 1:31. gândurilor lui, căci n-au luat aminte la Cuvintele Mele și au nesocotit Legea Mea. 20 Ce nevoie am*Ps. 40:6;50:7,8,9.Is. 1:11;63:3.Amos 5:21.Mica 6:6. Eu de tămâia care vine din Seba*Is. 60:6., de trestia mirositoare dintr-o țară depărtată? Arderile*Cap. 7:21. voastre de tot nu-Mi plac și jertfele voastre nu-Mi sunt plăcute." 21 De aceea, așa vorbește Domnul: „Iată, voi pune înaintea poporului acestuia niște pietre de poticnire, de care se vor lovi împreună părinți și fii, vecini și prieteni, și vor pieri." 22 Așa vorbește Domnul: „Iată că vine un popor din țara de la miazănoapte*Cap. 1:15;5:15;10:22;50:41-43., un neam mare se ridică de la marginile pământului. 23 Ei poartă arc și suliță; sunt cumpliți și fără milă; glasul lor urlă ca*Is. 5:30. marea; sunt călare pe cai și gata de luptă, ca un om pregătit de război, împotriva ta, fiică a Sionului!" 24 La vuietul apropierii lor, mâinile ni se slăbesc, ne apucă groaza*Cap. 4:31;13:21;49:24;50:43., ca durerea unei femei care naște. 25 Nu ieșiți în ogoare și nu mergeți pe drumuri! Căci acolo este sabia vrăjmașului, răspândind spaima de jur împrejur! 26 Fiica poporului meu, acoperă-te cu un sac*Cap. 4:8. și tăvălește-te*Cap. 25:34.Mica 1:10. în cenușă, jelește-te*Zah. 12:10. ca după singurul tău fiu, varsă lacrimi, lacrimi amare! Căci pe neașteptate vine pustiitorul peste noi. 27 „Te pusesem de pază*Cap. 1:18;15:20. peste poporul Meu, ca o cetățuie, ca să le cunoști și să le cercetezi calea. 28 Toți sunt niște*Cap. 5:23. răzvrătiți, niște bârfitori*Cap. 9:4., aramă*Ezec. 22:18. și fier, toți sunt niște stricați. 29 Foalele ard, plumbul este topit de foc; degeaba curățesc, căci zgura nu se dezlipește. 30 De aceea se vor numi argint*Is. 1:22. lepădat, căci Domnul i-a lepădat."
