1 Naquele dia o Senhor tomará a sua terrível e aguda espada para castigar a Leviatã, a veloz e fulminante serpente, tortuosa e ondeante, o dragão do mar.2 Nesse dia da libertação de Israel será cantado este hino:3 Israel é a minha vinha; eu, o Senhor, cuidarei dela para que dê bom fruto; cada dia a regarei, e dia e noite vigiarei para a guardar dos seus inimigos.4 A minha ira contra Israel já passou. Se encontrar espinhos e sarças perturbando-a, hei-de queimá-los, a menos que esses meus inimigos se rendam e peçam paz e a minha protecção.6 O tempo virá em que Israel criará raízes, crescerá, desabrochará, florescerá e encherá a terra com os seus frutos!7 Terá Deus castigado Israel tanto como os seus inimigos?8 Não. Porque os seus inimigos foram literalmente devastados, mas Israel foi punido apenas por algum tempo, exilando-o para longe da sua terra, tal como se tivesse sido soprado por um vento tempestuoso do leste.9 E porque fez Deus isso? Foi para os expurgar dos seus pecados, para os despojar de todos os seus ídolos, de todos os seus altares de idolatria, altares esses onde nunca mais se adorará, bosques e imagens do Sol que não ficarão mais de pé.10 As suas cidades fortes, rodeadas de muralhas, ficarão vazias e silenciosas, as casas abandonadas, as ervas a crescerem nas ruas porque não são pisadas, vacas pastando por toda a parte comendo ramos e rebentos.11 O meu povo é como ramos secos duma árvore, partidos e servindo apenas para arderem sob uma panela de comida. São uma nação de loucos, um povo insensato e estúpido, porque se desviaram de Deus. Por isso, aqueles que os criou não terá misericórdia deles, nem lhes mostrará piedade.12 Mas virá o tempo em que o Senhor os juntará, um a um, colhendo-os tal como plantas seleccionadas dum campo cujos limites máximos são o rio Eufrates e as fronteiras do Egipto.13 Nesse dia ouvir-se-á tocar a grande trombeta, e muitos que estavam já destinados a morrer no meio dos seus inimigos, na Assíria e no Egipto, serão salvos e trazidos para Jerusalém para adorarem o Senhor no monte santo.

1 In that day the LORD with his keen and great and strong sword will punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he will slay the dragon that is in the sea.2 In that day sing ye to her, A vineyard of red wine.3 I the LORD do keep it; I will water it every moment: lest any hurt it, I will keep it night and day.4 Fury is not in me: who would set the briers and thorns against me in battle? I would go through them, I would burn them together.5 Or let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me, and he shall make peace with me.6 He shall cause them that descend from Jacob to take root: Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit.7 Hath he smitten him, as he smote those that smote him? or is he slain according to the slaughter of them that are slain by him?8 In measure, when it shooteth forth, thou wilt debate with it: he stayeth his rough wind in the day of the east wind.9 By this therefore shall the iniquity of Jacob be purged; and this is all the fruit to take away his sin; when he maketh all the stones of the altar as chalk-stones that are beaten asunder, the groves and images shall not stand up.10 Yet the fortified city shall be desolate, and the habitation forsaken, and left like a wilderness: there shall the calf feed, and there shall he lie down, and consume its branches.11 When its boughs are withered, they shall be broken off: the women come and set them on fire: for it is a people of no understanding: therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them, and he that formed them will show them no favor.12 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall gather from the channel of the river to the stream of Egypt, and ye shall be gathered one by one, O ye children of Israel.13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come who were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the LORD on the holy mount at Jerusalem.
