1 Agora vou cantar uma canção dedicada àquele que amo, a propósito da sua vinha:2 Aquele que amo tem uma vinha numa colina fértil. Lavrou-a, limpou-a das pedras, e plantou-a com excelentes vides. Fez erguer nela uma torre e mandou construir um lagar ali. Depois esperou pelos frutos. Mas os cachos que cresceram eram de uva brava e ácida; não eram nada aquilo que ele esperava - uvas doces.3 Agora, pois, gente de Jerusalém e de Judá, que ouviu o que se passou, sejam vocês os juízes!4 Que mais poderia eu ter feito? Porque me deu, a minha vinha, uvas bravas em vez de doces?5 Farei isto: vou deitar abaixo a vedação que lhe tinha levantado à volta e deixar que a minha vinha seja pasto de rebanhos e de todo o gado, que a pisarão.6 Não a podarei nem a cavarei mais; antes deixarei que cresçam nela sarças e espinhos. Darei ordens às nuvens para que não derramem mais chuvas nela.7 Contei-vos a história do povo de Deus. São eles a vinha de que vos falei. Israel e Judá são esse campo que lhe dava tanto prazer! O Senhor esperava que produzissem uma colheita de justiça, mas apenas encontrou derramamento de sangue; esperava rectidão, e houve só choro de profunda opressão e injustiça que lhe chegou aos ouvidos.8 Ai dos que vão comprando propriedade atrás propriedade, a tal ponto que depois os outros não têm mais onde viver. As vossas casas são construídas em grandes latifúndios, de tal forma que podem ficar a viver sozinhos no meio da terra! Mas o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais já garantiu o vosso terrível destino;9 ouvi-o com os meus próprios ouvidos dizer, Muitas dessas belas e grandes habitações ficarão desertas, e os seus proprietários serão mortos e desaparecerão.10 Dois hectares não chegarão a produzir senão uns vinte litros de vinho! Dez medidas de semente não chegarão a produzir mais do que uma só!11 Ai dos que se levantam de manhã cedo para apanhar grandes bebedeiras que se prolongam até tarde na noite; andam sempre a cair de bêbedos. Vocês fazem ouvir bela música com instrumentos nas vossas festas e recepções. Mas com o Senhor não se preocupam minimamente.13 Por isso vos mandarei para o exílio, para bem longe, porque nem sabem nem se interessam em saber tudo o que fiz por vocês. A gente grande, da alta sociedade, morrerá de fome; e os do povo morrerão de sede.14 Por isso o inferno já está a abrir a boca toda, só com o apetite que lhe dá este belo pedaço que é Jerusalém. Os grandes tanto como os pequenos que nela moram serão engolidos, tal como aqueles magotes de embriagados.15 Nesse dia, o orgulhoso será abatido até ao pó da terra, e o altivo humilhado.16 Mas o Senhor dos exércitos será exaltado acima de tudo, porque só ele é santo, justo e bom.17 Nesses dias os rebanhos pastarão por entre as ruínas. Cordeiros, bezerros e cabritos pastarão ali à vontade!18 Ai dos que arrastam os seus pecados atrás de si com cordas de maldade e as suas injustiças com tirantes de carroças. Ousam até gracejar com o santo de Israel e dizer ao Senhor que os castiga. Vá, avia-te e castiga-nos, ó Deus!, dizem. Sempre queremos ver o que fazes!20 Ai dos que ao mal chamam bem, e ao bem mal; dos que dizem que as trevas são luz, e a luz trevas; e dos que fazem do amargo doce e do doce amargo!21 Ai dos que se fazem passar por sábios e astutos aos seus próprios olhos!22 Ai dos que se consideram heróis quando se trata de beber, e se gabam de todo o álcool que são capazes de ingerir.23 Deixam-se subornar com presentes para perverter aquilo que é justo, permitindo assim que os culpados fiquem livres e que os inocentes sejam presos.24 Mas o Senhor os defrontará e os queimará. Serão consumidos como palha a arder. As raízes que conseguiram lançar apodrecerão; as flores que lhes brotaram murcharão e se desfarão em pó. Porque atiraram para longe com as leis de Deus e desprezaram a palavra do santo de Israel.25 É por isso que a ira do Senhor se acendeu contra o seu povo; é por isso que estendeu a sua mão para os esmagar. As montanhas tremerão. Os cadáveres do seu povo serão lançados para o canto da rua como lixo. E mesmo assim a sua ira não desaparecerá. A sua mão continuará a ser pesada sobre eles.26 Mandará um sinal às nações, até às mais afastadas, assobiando às extremidades da terra para que venham a correr contra Jerusalém.27 E não haverá cansados entre eles, nem gente que tropece. Não terão descanso, não pararão para dormir. Não desapertarão os cintos nem as botas para se aliviarem um pouco sequer.28 Vêm armados eficazmente com flechas bem agudas e arcos bem retesados. As patas dos cavalos correndo sobre as pedras até lançam faíscas; as rodas dos carros parecem um turbilhão de vento.29 O seu rugido é como o dos leões saltando sobre a presa. Será pois assim que saltarão sobre o meu povo e o levarão para o cativeiro, sem que haja alguém para os livrar.30 O rugido que farão ao cair sobre as suas vítimas será semelhante ao bramido do mar durante uma tempestade. Sobre Israel cairá uma mortalha de trevas e de tristeza, e o próprio céu se fará escuridão.

1 Now will I sing to my well-beloved a song of my beloved concerning his vineyard. My well-beloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill:2 And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones of it, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a wine-press therein: and he expected that it would bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.3 And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard.4 What more could have been done to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? Why, when I expected that it would bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?5 And now come; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall of it, and it shall be trodden down:6 And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.7 For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.8 Woe to them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there is no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!9 In my ears said the LORD of hosts, Of a truth many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.10 Yes, ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of a homer shall yield an ephah.11 Woe to them that rise early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflameth them!12 And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands.13 Therefore my people have gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honorable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.14 Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.15 And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be abased.16 But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.17 Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.18 Woe to them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart-rope:19 That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!20 Woe to them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!21 Woe to them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!22 Woe to them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:23 Who justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!24 Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.25 Therefore is the anger of the LORD kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath smitten them: and the hills trembled, and their carcasses were torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.26 And he will lift up an ensign to the nations from afar, and will hiss to them from the end of the earth: and behold, they shall come with speed swiftly:27 None shall be weary nor stumble among them; none shall slumber nor sleep; neither shall the girdle of their loins be loosed, nor the latchet of their shoes be broken:28 Whose arrows are sharp, and all their bows bent, their horses' hoofs shall be counted like flint, and their wheels like a whirlwind:29 Their roaring shall be like a lion, they shall roar like young lions: yes, they shall roar, and lay hold of the prey, and shall carry it away safe, and none shall deliver it.30 And in that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea: and if one looketh to the land, behold darkness and sorrow, and the light is darkened in its heavens.
