1 Ai de Ariel , a cidade que David ocupou. Ano após ano vocês fazem as vossas muitas ofertas, podem até acrescentá-las, mas eu vos enviarei uma pesada sentença e haverá choro e tristeza.2 Porque Jerusalém se tornará para mim num altar coberto de sangue.3 Eu serei o vosso inimigo. Rodearei Jerusalém e levantarei um cerco contra ela; construirei à volta pontes de ataque para a destruir.4 A tua voz será como um sopro, como um débil gemido, porque sairá debaixo da terra onde jazes enterrada.5 No entanto, repentinamente, os teus implacáveis inimigos voarão para longe, como pó miúdo levado pelo vento. Num instante, eu, o Senhor dos exércitos, cairei sobre eles com raios, tremores de terra, tufões e fogo.7 Todas as nações que combatem Israel desaparecerão como um sonho!8 Tal como uma pessoa morrendo de fome sonha com comer, mas continua esfomeada, e um indivíduo cheio de sede sonha com beber, mas permanece enfraquecido com a sede ao acordar, assim os teus inimigos sonharão com uma conquista vitoriosa, mas que de maneira nenhuma alcançarão.9 Vocês estão admirados e incrédulos? Não acreditam nisso? Pois então, já que o querem, continuem assim cegos e vão por diante! O vosso entendimento está obtuso - e não é de vinho, de maneira nenhuma! Cambaleiam, mas não é por terem bebido!10 É porque o Senhor derramou sobre vocês um espírito de profundo adormecimento. Fechou os olhos dos vossos profetas e pregadores;11 por isso todos estes acontecimentos futuros são como um livro fechado para eles. Dá-se esse livro a alguém que sabe ler, e dirá: Não posso lê-lo, está fechado e selado. Dá-se a outra pessoa que não sabe ler, e dirá: Tenho pena, mas nem sequer sei ler.13 Assim, o Senhor diz: Este povo aproxima-se de mim só com os lábios, mas tem o seu coração afastado para longe de mim. Honra-me apenas com tradições humanas, aprendidas de cor.14 Por isso continuarei a fazer uma obra de espanto com eles: a sabedoria dos seus sábios falhará, a capacidade dos seus técnicos será um malogro!15 Ai dos que tentam esconder os seus planos de Deus, que tentam agir às escuras, para que Deus não veja! Deus não há-de ver-nos, dizem para consigo mesmos. Ele não sabe o que vamos fazendo!16 Como é possível ser-se tão estúpido! Não será ele, o oleiro, muito maior do que vocês, os vasos de barro que ele faz? Serão vocês capazes de dizer: Não foi ele quem nos fez? Uma máquina dirá do seu inventor: Não percebe de nada?17 Em breve o deserto do Líbano se tornará de novo num campo fér til, numa viçosa e abundante floresta.18 Nesse dia os surdos ouvirão as palavras do livro, e mesmo na sua escuridão os cegos compreenderão os meus planos.19 Os amantes da paz serão cheios duma fresca alegria da parte do Senhor, e os pobres rejubilarão no santo de Israel.20 Os tiranos serão reduzidos a nada, os escarnecedores acabarão, e os que conspiram o mal serão mortos -21 o violento, que briga com o seu próximo sem razão alguma, os que, escondidos, fazem uma espera para bater no juiz que os sentenciou, e os que em qualquer situação são sempre desonestos e injustos.22 Esta é a razão porque o Senhor, que resgatou Abraão, diz: O meu povo não mais empalidecerá de temor, nem será envergonhado.23 Porque quando eles virem os seus filhos e o que vou fazer no meio deles, então me reconhecerão como o Deus santo de Jacob, e ficarão espantados. Louvarão o Santo de Israel, e o adorarão.24 Os que andam no erro acreditarão na verdade, e os que sempre refilam terão enfim desejo de ser ensinados!

1 Woe to Ariel, to Ariel, the city where David dwelt! add ye year to year; let them kill sacrifices.2 Yet I will distress Ariel, and there shall be heaviness and sorrow; and it shall be to me as Ariel.3 And I will encamp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a mount, and I will raise forts against thee.4 And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust.5 Moreover, the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as chaff that passeth away: yes, it shall be at an instant suddenly.6 Thou shalt be visited by the LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.7 And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her munition, and that distress her, shall be as a dream of a night-vision.8 It shall even be as when a hungry man dreameth, and behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.9 Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.10 For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.11 And the vision of all is become to you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honor me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear towards me is taught by the precept of men:14 Therefore behold, I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this people, even an astonishing work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.15 Woe to them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?16 Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?17 Is it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest?18 And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness.19 The meek also shall increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.20 For the terrible one is brought to naught, and the scoffer is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off:21 That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of naught.22 Therefore thus saith the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob, Jacob shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now become pale.23 But when he seeth his children, the work of my hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel.24 They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine.
