1 Ouçam-me vocês todos, que habitam em terras distantes: O Senhor me chamou antes que eu nascesse. Já desde o ventre da minha mãe me chamou pelo meu nome.2 Deus tornará as minhas palavras de julgamento tão agudas e penetrantes como espadas afiadas. Escondeu-me sob a sombra da sua mão. Sou como uma aguda flecha da sua aljava.3 Disse-me: És meu servo, um príncipe do poder de Deus, e por ti hei-de ser glorificado.4 Repliquei: Mas o meu trabalho a favor deles parece-me em vão. Gastei com eles a minha força, mas inutilmente, sem resposta. Contudo deixei com Deus a questão do meu direito; deixei com o Senhor o problema da minha recompensa.5 E agora, diz o Senhor - o Senhor que me formou desde o ventre de minha mãe para o servir, ele que me mandou restaurar para si o seu povo Israel, e que me deu força para cumprir essa tarefa, e que me honrou com isso! -6 tu farás mais do que restaurar Israel para mim, e reunires os restantes de Israel. Farei de ti uma luz para as nações do mundo, para lhes levar a minha salvação, até aos recantos mais longínquos.7 O Senhor, o redentor e o santo de Israel, diz àquele que é desprezado, rejeitado pela humanidade, dominado pelo calcanhar de governantes terrenos: Os chefes das nações ainda se hão-de levantar respeitosamente à tua passagem; reis, príncipes e governantes se inclinarão profundamente perante ti por causa do Senhor te ter escolhido; ele, o Senhor fiel, o santo de Israel, é quem te escolhe.8 Diz o Senhor: O teu pedido chegou no tempo favorável. Proteger-te-ei dum dano prematuro, e dar-te-ei como sinal e como penhor a Israel, como prova de que tornarei a restabelecer a terra de Israel e a tornarei a dar ao seu próprio povo.9 Por teu intermédio estou a dizer aos prisioneiros das trevas: - Saiam! Estou a dar-vos a liberdade! Eles serão os meus cordeiros, pastando ao longo dos caminhos; e até sobre colinas áridas encontrarão boa comida. Nunca terão fome; nunca terão sede. Nem o Sol caloroso nem os ardentes ventos do deserto os atingirão. Porque na minha misericórdia os conduzirei mansamente junto das fontes de água. Transformarei as elevações em lisos caminhos para eles; farei largas estradas por cima de vales.12 Vejam bem como o meu povo volta dos pontos mais distantes, do norte, do ocidente, do sul.13 Cantem de alegria, ó céus; grita, ó Terra; rompam em cânticos, ó montanhas, porque o Senhor confortou o seu povo e teve compaixão deles na sua tristeza.14 Mas mesmo assim dizem: O meu Senhor abandonou-nos; esqueceu-se de nós.15 Mas eu respondo: Nunca! Pode uma mulher esquecer-se do seu menino e não ter amor pelo seu próprio filho? Pois mesmo que isso possa acontecer, eu contudo nunca me esquecerei de vocês.16 Vejam como escrevi o vosso nome na palma da minha mão, e perante mim está constantemente a imagem das muralhas de Jerusalém em ruínas. Em breve chegarão aqueles que vão reconstruí-las e que hão-de expulsar todos os que as destruíram.18 Olhem, vejam como o Senhor garantiu que todos os vossos inimigos virão a ser vossos escravos; serão para vocês como preciosos ornamentos, como jóias duma noiva.19 Até mesmo as partes mais desoladas da vossa terra abandonada ficarão sobrepovoadas, e os vossos inimigos que vos escravizaram fugirão. As gerações que nasceram no exílio retornarão e dirão: Precisamos de mais espaço! Aqui há demasiada gente!21 Então dirão no vosso coração: Quem foi que fez isto tudo a meu favor? Porque a maior parte dos meus filhos foi morta e o resto foi levado para o exílio, deixando-me aqui sozinho. Quem foi então que criou estes aqui? Quem foi que suscitou estes e os trouxe até aqui?22 O Senhor Deus diz: Olha, farei um sinal aos gentios, levantarei aos olhos deles a minha bandeira, e eles te trarão os teus próprios filhos nos braços, as tuas filhas aos ombros. Chefes e governantes estarão ao teu serviço, atendendo a todas as tuas necessidades; inclinar-se-ão até à terra na tua frente, respeitando até o pó do chão que os teus pés pisarem. E então verificarás como eu sou o Senhor. Aqueles que têm esperança em mim nunca ficarão desapontados.24 Quem é que é capaz de arrancar uma presa das mãos dum homem poderoso? Quem ousará pedir a um tirano que liberte os seus cativos?25 Mas o Senhor diz: Até os prisioneiros dos mais poderosos, daqueles que são mais temidos, serão libertados; porque serei eu própria a lutar contra os que te combatem; e salvarei os teus filhos.26 Alimentarei os teus adversários com a própria carne deles, e chegarão a embriagar-se com os rios de sangue que eles próprios verterão. Todo o mundo saberá que eu, o Senhor, sou o vosso salvador, o vosso redentor, o poderoso de Israel.

1 Listen to me, O Isles; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.2 And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shade of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me;3 And said to me, Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.4 Then I said, I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for naught, and in vain; yet surely my judgment is with the LORD, and my work with my God.5 And now, saith the LORD that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and my God shall be my strength.6 And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldst be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation to the end of the earth.7 Thus saith the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the LORD that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee.8 Thus saith the LORD, In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages:9 That thou mayest say to the prisoners, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Show yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places.10 They shall not hunger nor thirst, neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them.11 And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted.12 Behold, these shall come from far: and lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim.13 Sing, O heavens, and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the LORD hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted.14 But Zion said, The LORD hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.15 Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yes, they may forget, yet I will not forget thee.16 Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.17 Thy children shall make haste; thy destroyers and they that made thee waste, shall go forth from thee.18 Lift up thy eyes around, and behold: all these assemble themselves, and come to thee. As I live, saith the LORD, thou shalt surely clothe thee with them all, as with an ornament, and bind them on thee, as a bride doeth.19 For thy waste and thy desolate places, and the land of thy destruction, shall even now be too narrow by reason of the inhabitants, and they that swallowed thee up shall be far away.20 The children which thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the other, shall say again in thy ears, The place is too narrow for me: give place to me that I may dwell.21 Then shalt thou say in thy heart, Who hath begotten these for me, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and removing to and fro? and who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where have they been?22 Thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I will lift up my hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people: and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.23 And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers: they shall bow to thee with their face towards the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.24 Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered?25 But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.26 And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the LORD am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.
