1 Clamem, com uma voz como de trompeta; denunciem claramente ao meu povo todos os seus pecados! Porque eles pretendem dar uma aparência de piedade, de religiosidade!2 Vêm todos os dias ao templo e quem os vê parece que estão deleitados a ouvir a leitura das minhas leis, como se quisessem sinceramente obedecer-lhes, como se não desprezassem de forma nenhuma os mandamentos do seu Deus! Julgar-se-ia até que estão ansiosos por cumprir correctamente os preceitos de adoração. Oh! Como dão a impressão de amar os serviços do templo!3 Jejuámos na tua presença, dizem. Porque é que não ficaste impressionado com isso? Porque não reparaste nos nossos sacrifícios? Porque não quiseste ouvir as nossas orações? Fizemos tanta penitência e não te deste conta de nada!4 É porque vocês só vivem para satisfazer os vossos apetites carnais, mesmo enquanto estão a jejuar; e porque continuam sempre na mesma a oprimir os vossos trabalhadores. Vejam bem: Para que serve jejuar se continuam a disputar entre si, a odiar-se e a guerrear-se? Essa espécie de jejuns não têm efeito nenhum comigo. Alguma vez eu quero que vocês façam esse tipo de penitências, e se inclinem até ao chão como juncos batidos pelo vento, que se vistam de sacos, que se cubram de cinzas? É a isso que vocês chamam jejum?6 Não. A espécie de jejum que eu pretendo é que parem de oprimir os que trabalham para vocês e que os tratem com justiça, dando-lhes o salário a que têm direito.7 Quero que partilhem a vossa comida com os que têm fome e que sejam hospitaleiros para com os que vivem desprotegidos, pobres, desemparados. Que dêem roupa aos que têm frio, e que não se escondam daqueles que, sendo até vossos familiares, precisam da vossa ajuda.8 Se fizerem estas coisas Deus fará brilhar sobre vocês a luz da sua própria glória; dar-vos-á saúde; a vossa vida com Deus será a força do vosso progresso; a vossa justiça tornar-se-á o vosso escudo de protecção, e a glória do Senhor vos protegerá à retaguarda.9 E então quando chamarem, o Senhor responderá. Sim, aqui estou, será a sua rápida resposta. Tudo o que precisam de fazer é deixar de oprimir o fraco, abandonar a falsidade, não fazer falsas acusações, nem espalhar mentiras!10 Dêem de comer ao faminto! Ajudem os necessitados e aflitos! Então a vossa luz brilhará nas trevas, e a escuridão à vossa volta será como a brilhante claridade do dia. O Senhor vos guiará continuamente e vos encherá de toda a sorte de coisas boas, dando-vos bem-estar e saúde. Serão como um viçoso jardim bem regado com frescas águas; serão como uma fonte jorrando continuamente água abundante. Os vossos filhos tornarão a construir as ruínas antigas, edificando sobre velhas fundações do passado; e serão conhecidos como o povo que reconstrói as suas muralhas e cidades.13 Se guardarem o santo sábado, não se divertindo nem trabalhando nesse dia, mas antes honrando-o e tendo prazer nele como o dia santo do Senhor, honrando o Senhor em tudo o que fizerem, não seguindo os vossos próprios desejos e prazeres, nem mantendo propósitos e conversas ociosas e inúteis, então o Senhor será todo o vosso prazer. E farei com que cavalguem nas alturas, e com que obtenham a totalidade das bênçãos que prometi a Jacob, vosso pai. É o Senhor mesmo quem diz isto.

1 Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.3 Why have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? why have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labors.4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou shouldst bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou shouldst cover him; and that thou shouldst not hide thyself from thy own flesh?8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thy health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rear-ward.9 Then shalt thou call, and the LORD will answer; thou shalt cry, and he will say, Here I am. If thou shalt take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;10 And if thou shalt draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noon day:11 And the LORD will guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drouth, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.12 And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.13 If thou shalt turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honorable; and shalt honor him, not doing thy own ways, nor finding thy own pleasure, nor speaking thy own words:14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
