1 Agora, ouve-me, ó meu servo Israel, vocês que eu escolhi:2 O Senhor, que vos criou e que quer ajudar-vos, diz-vos assim: Nada receiem, ó Jerusalém, povo que me serve, escolhido por mim.3 Dar-vos-ei águas abundantes para matar a sede, a vocês e aos vossos campos ressequidos. Derramarei o meu Espírito e as minhas bênçãos sobre os vossos filhos.4 E crescerão viçosamente como erva bem regada, como salgueiros à beira dos rios.5 Eu pertenço ao Senhor, dirão com orgulho. E eu sou judeu! Trarão nas mãos o nome de Deus, e o honroso nome de Israel.6 O Senhor, o rei de Israel, sim, o redentor de Israel, o Senhor dos exércitos do céu falou assim: Eu sou o primeiro e o último; além de mim não há mais nenhum Deus.7 Quem mais poderia dizer-vos aquilo que vai acontecer no futuro? E se puderem então que o digam, que provem o seu poder se têm algum. Que façam o mesmo que eu fiz desde os tempos antigos. Não temam, não! Não vos garanti eu já, desde há tanto tempo, que vos salvaria? Vocês são testemunhas em como não há outro Deus! Não conheço mais ninguém. Não há outra rocha!9 Como são loucos os que fabricam ídolos para lhes servirem de deuses. As suas petições ficam sem resposta. E eles próprios são testemunhas em como é mesmo assim, porque os seus ídolos não vêem nem conhecem. Não admira que quem os adora fica tão envergonhado.10 Quem se não um doido se lembraria de fazer para si um deus, um ídolo sem valor algum?11 E quem os adorar terá de se apresentar perante o Senhor, cheio de vergonha, humilhado; ele e todos esses fabricantes, modeladores de imagens, meros seres humanos, que se gabam com altivez de terem feito um deus. Todos juntos terão de se apresentar a juízo, aterrorizados.12 Primeiro, o ferreiro faz o machado; trabalha o metal na forja, batendo-o com toda a força; e fica cansado, com sede e fome; tanto trabalho fá-lo desfalecer.13 Seguidamente, o marceneiro pega nesse machado para fabricar então um ídolo. Tira as medidas, faz as marcas necessárias e começa assim a esculpir um rosto humano. Por fim, tem na sua frente uma imagem, que até pode ser muito perfeita, mas que nem sequer é capaz de se mover do seu lugar.14 São assim, essas pessoas; abatem cedros, escolhem ciprestes ou carvalhos para derrubar; plantam olmeiros, que a chuva faz crescer.15 Depois, parte dessa madeira serve-lhes para se aquecerem, ou para cozerem pão. Com o resto fazem eles mesmos um deus, um deus para as pessoas adorarem! Um deus perante o qual há gente que se inclina e se ajoelha!16 É assim mesmo! - parte da árvore serviu para prepararem a carne que vão comer, serviu para se aquecerem, para lhes dar satisfação; e com o resto fabricam um deus para si, um deus esculpido! Inclinam-se perante ele, adoram-no e fazem-lhe orações - Livra-me, dizem-lhe. Tu és o meu deus!18 Tanta ignorância e estupidez! Deus acabou por fechar-lhes os olhos, para que não vejam; fechou-lhes as mentes para que não entendam.19 E nenhum deles reconsidera, nenhum deles pensa um bocado e diz para consigo: Mas isto que tenho na minha frente não passa afinal dum simples pedaço de madeira! Foi lenha que me serviu para cozer o pão, para me assar a carne; como é que então o resto pode servir para ser um deus? Será realmente justo que me ajoelhe na frente dum pedaço de lenha?20 Esse pobre e enganado está-se a alimentar como que de cinzas; está a confiar em algo que nunca lhe poderá dar ajuda de espécie alguma. E para cúmulo não tem em si entendimento suficiente sequer para reflectir e dizer para consigo: Não será que esta coisa, este ídolo que estou a segurar nas mãos, é uma profunda mentira?!21 Lembra-te destas coisas, Israel, porque és meu servo. Formei-te, e não me esquecerei de ti.22 Liquidei os vossos pecados. Foram-se, tal como o crepúsculo matinal se esvai perante a luz do Sol! Oh! Voltem-se para mim, pois que já paguei o preço da vossa libertação.23 Cantem, ó céus, porque o Senhor fez todas estas coisas maravilhosas. Grita de júbilo, ó terra; que as montanhas e as florestas, e até cada uma das suas árvores, se expandam em cânticos, visto que o Senhor resgatou Jacob, e se fez glorioso em Israel!24 O Senhor, o teu redentor, que te criou, diz: Todas as coisas foram feitas por mim. Fui só eu quem estendeu os céus. Fui eu só quem fez a Terra e tudo o que nela existe.25 Eu sou aquele que é capaz de mostrar como são mentirosos os falsos profetas, porque faço acontecer as coisas muito diferentemente do que eles disseram. Faço com que gente tida como sábia diga precisamente o contrário daquilo que deveria dizer, faço com que se tornem como loucos.26 Mas por outro lado, aquilo que os meus profetas dizem, isso faço com que aconteça mesmo. Quando dizem que Jerusalém será libertada, e que as cidades de Judá serão reedificadas, isso se realizará efectivamente!27 Quando digo às torrentes de águas: Sequem-se! - elas hão-de mesmo secar-se.28 Quando digo a Ciro , Ele é meu pastor, com certeza que ele fará tudo o que eu tiver dito e Jerusalém será reedificada, o templo restaurado; pois que fui eu quem o disse.

1 Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen:2 Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, who will help thee: Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thy offspring:4 And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the watercourses.5 One shall say, I am the LORD'S; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand to the LORD, and surname himself by the name of Israel.6 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and besides me there is no God.7 And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them show to them.8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God besides me? verily there is no God; I know not any.9 They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.10 Who hath formed a god, or cast a graven image that is profitable for nothing?11 Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed: and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be assembled, let them stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be ashamed together.12 The smith with the tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms: yes, he is hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is faint.13 The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.14 He heweth down cedars for himself, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it.15 Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take of it, and warm himself; indeed he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yes, he maketh a god, and worshipeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down to it.16 He burneth part of it in the fire; with part of it he eateth flesh; he roasteth meat, and is satisfied: yes, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:17 And the residue of it he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down to it, and worshipeth it, and prayeth to it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.18 They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.19 And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; I have also baked bread upon its coals; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue of it an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?20 He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?21 Remember these, O Jacob and Israel; for thou art my servant: I have formed thee; thou art my servant: O Israel, thou shalt not be forgotten by me.22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and as a cloud, thy sins: return to me; for I have redeemed thee.23 Sing, O ye heavens; for the LORD hath done it: shout, ye lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel.24 Thus saith the LORD thy Redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself:25 That frustrateth the tokens of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish;26 That confirmeth the word of his servant, and performeth the counsel of his messengers; that saith to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be inhabited; and to the cities of Judah, Ye shall be built, and I will raise up her decayed places:27 That saith to the deep, Be dry, and I will dry up thy rivers:28 That saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and he shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.
