1 No ano em que morreu o rei Uzias, eu vi o Senhor! Estava sentado num trono sublime, e o templo estava cheio com a sua glória.2 Pairando sobre ele havia anjos, cada um com seis asas. Com duas das asas cobriam as faces; com outras duas, os pés; e com as duas últimas voavam.3 E clamavam uns para os outros: Santo, santo, santo é o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais. Toda a Terra está cheia da sua glória.4 Isto era expresso de tal maneira que fez tremer o templo até aos alicerces, e de repente todo o santuário se encheu de fumo.5 Então eu disse, Ai de mim que já estou condenado, porque sou um pecador de fala impura; pertenço a uma raça pecadora e que fala duma forma corrupta; e acontece que vi o rei, o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais!6 Então um dos serafins voou sobre o altar e com uma tenaz tirou uma brasa a arder. Tocou-me os lábios com ela e disse: A partir de agora és considerado não culpado porque esta brasa tocou a tua boca. Os teus pecados são perdoados.8 Depois ouvi o Senhor perguntar: Quem enviarei como mensageiro ao seu povo? Quem irá por nós? E eu disse, Vou eu! Envia-me a mim.9 Vai então e diz o seguinte ao meu povo: 'Ainda que ouçam as minhas palavras, não entenderão. Ainda que vejam, com efeito, não perceberão.' Então, que o seu coração se embruteça, e que se lhes fechem os ouvidos e os olhos. Não estou empenhado em que vejam, ouçam e compreendam, e em que se voltem para mim para que os cure.11 Após isso perguntei: Senhor, e quando é que eles estarão enfim prontos para ouvir? Isso não acontecerá antes que as suas cidades sejam destruídas de tal maneira que ninguém lá ficará vivo; nem antes que todo o país se torne num deserto imenso, e que sejam todos levados como escravos para países distantes, e que toda a terra de Israel fique inteiramente desabitada!13 E no entanto uma décima parte ficará de resto e sobreviverá; ainda que Israel seja invadido repetidas vezes e seja destruído, no entanto será semelhante a uma árvore abatida, mas cujo cepo ainda pode reviver e dar frutos novamente.

1 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and elevated, and his train filled the temple.2 Above it stood seraphim: each one had six wings; with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.3 And one cried to another, and said, Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.4 And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thy iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.9 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.11 Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities shall be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate;12 And the LORD shall have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.13 But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil-tree, and as an oak whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance of it.
