1 Eis que um rei justo está para vir; estará acompanhado de administradores honestes.2 E um homem protegerá Israel da tempestade e do vento. Refrescá-lo-á tal como faz um rio no deserto, ou como a sombra duma grande rocha numa terra seca.3 Então, enfim, os olhos de Israel se abrirão atentamente para Deus. O seu povo ouvirá a sua voz.4 Até os insensatos entre eles ficarão cheios de entendimento, e aqueles que gaguejam passarão a exprimir-se com clareza.5 Nesses dias os descrentes não mais serão como gente liberal. Os ricos que são fraudulentos não serão mais considerados generosos. Toda a gente logo reconhecerá um invíduo mau quando o vir. Os hipócritas não enganarão mais ninguém; as suas mentiras acerca de Deus, deixando famintas as almas dos que querem saciar-se da verdade, serão desmascaradas. E o mesmo acontecerá com os hábeis truques que usa a gente má, e as falsidades que inventam para explorar os pobres, mesmo nos tribunais.8 Mas os rectos serão generosos para com o seu próximo, e Deus os abençoará por tudo quanto farão.9 Ouçam vocês mulheres que descansam por aí despreocupadamente; ouçam-me e eu vos direi qual há-de ser a vossa paga:10 Dentro em breve - dentro de pouco mais de um ano - deixarão de se sentir tão seguras; começarão a estar bem preocupadas, pois que a colheita dos frutos que esperavam terá falhado completamente, e nem sequer haverá ceifa.11 Por isso -tremam, ó mulheres que aí estão descansadamente- não se justifica a vossa desm preocupação. Rasguem antes a vossa bela e delicada roupa, vistam-se de saco, como prova de contrição. Batam no peito pelo desespero de verem perder-se as vossas belas propriedades, e esses belos vinhedos que já se foram.13 Todas estas terras que foram vossas não produzirão mais do que espinhos e sarças. Desaparecerão igualmente os vossos lares confortáveis, as felizes cidades em que viviam.14 Os palácios, os ricos solares ficarão desertos, as cidades populosas acabarão vazias de gente. Jumentos montêses e animais selvagens pastarão nas colinas onde se levantavam as torres dos guardas,15 até que lá do céu se derrame sobre nós o Espírito. Então as terras desertas se tornarão de novo em campos férteis, com enormes searas.16 Então a justiça dominará nas terras que estavam desertas, e reinará nos campos férteis; e como efeito da justiça, haverá paz, assim como repouso e segurança para sempre.18 O meu povo viverá em segurança, descansadamente nos seus lares.19 Mas os assírios serão destruídos e as suas cidades derrubadas.20 E Deus abençoará grandemente o seu povo. Seja onde for que semearem, ricas searas crescerão; os seus rebanhos, o seu gado pastará em esplêndidas pastagens verdes.

1 Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.2 And a man shall be as a hiding-place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as streams of water in a dry place, as the shade of a great rock in a weary land.3 And the eyes of them that see shall not be dim, and the ears of them that hear shall hearken.4 The heart also of the rash shall understand knowledge, and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly.5 The vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be bountiful.6 For the vile person will speak villainy, and his heart will work iniquity, to practice hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry; and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.7 The instruments also of the churl are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right.8 But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.9 Rise up, ye women that are at ease; hear my voice, ye careless daughters; give ear to my speech.10 Many days and years shall ye be troubled, ye careless women: for the vintage shall fail, the gathering shall not come.11 Tremble, ye women that are at ease; be troubled, ye careless ones: strip ye, and make you bare, and gird sackcloth upon your loins.12 They shall lament for the breasts, for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine.13 Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers; also, upon all the houses of joy in the joyous city:14 Because the palaces shall be forsaken; the multitude of the city shall be left; the forts and towers shall be for dens for ever, a joy of wild asses, a pasture of flocks;15 Until the spirit shall be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness shall be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be counted for a forest.16 Then judgment shall dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness remain in the fruitful field.17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance for ever.18 And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting-places;19 When it shall hail, coming down on the forest; and the city shall be low in a low place.20 Blessed are ye that sow beside all waters, that send forth thither the feet of the ox and the ass.
