1 No décimo quarto ano do reinado de Ezequias, Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, veio combater contra todas as cidades fortificadas de Judá e tomou-as.2 Depois enviou o seu representante pessoal com um grande exército de Laquis para conferenciar com o rei Ezequias em Jerusalém. Fez estacionar o exército junto ao cano de saída das águas do tanque superior, ao longo do caminho que vai para o campo onde se lava a roupa.3 Então Eliaquim (filho de Hilquias), que era o primeiro-ministro, acompanhado de Sebna, escrivão do rei, e de Joá (filho de Asafe), secretário real, formaram entre si uma comissão que saiu da cidade para se encontrar com o enviado da Assíria.7 Mas talvez também estejas a dizer: 'Nós confiamos no Senhor nosso Deus!' Então não é esse aquele que o vossso rei insultou, deitando abaixo os seus templos e os altares sobre as colinas, e obrigando toda a gente em Judá a adorar nos altares aqui em Jerusalém?8 O meu mestre, o rei da Assíria, propõe-vos o seguinte negócio - se vocês conseguirem arranjar ainda 2.000 homens, do que vos ficou de todo o vosso exército, então ele dá-vos outros tantos cavalos para que eles os montem!9 Pois mesmo que conseguissem convocar esse pequenino exército, isso seria uma força militar insignificante em relação ao mais pequeno e pior contingente das forças armadas do meu senhor!10 E mais ainda: Pensas que vim aqui sem que tivesse sido o Senhor a dizer para tomar esta terra? Foi mesmo o Senhor quem me disse: Vai e destrói-a!11 Então Eliaquim, Sebna e Joá disseram-lhe: Por favor, pedimos-te que nos fales antes em aramaico, porque o entendemos perfeitamente, e não te expresses em hebraico, visto que não há necessidade que o povo que está aí sobre a muralha perceba tudo.12 Mas ele respondeu: O meu senhor quer precisamente que toda a gente em Jerusalém ouça isto que vos estou a dizer, e não apenas vocês. Ele pretende que cada habitante saiba que se vocês não se submeterem, esta cidade será cercada, sitiada, e durante tanto tempo que cada um há-de ficar tão faminto, tão morto de sede, que chegarão ao ponto de comer as suas fezes e beber a sua própria urina.13 E a seguir gritou em hebraico para o povo, os judeus, que estavam ouvindo em cima da muralha: Ouçam o que vos diz o grande rei, o rei da Assíria:14 Não deixem que Ezequias vos engane - ele nada poderá fazer para vos salvar. Não lhe dêem ouvidos quando vos disser para confiarem no Senhor, e que o Senhor não permitirá que sejam conquistados pelo rei da Assíria.16 Não ouçam Ezequias. Vejam antes o que o rei da Assíria vos oferece: Primeiro devem trazer-me um presente em sinal de rendição, e aliem-se a mim. Depois, abram todas as portas da cidade e saiam; deixarei que cada um tenha a sua terra, a sua propriedade a cultivar, a tratar e a regar, e isso até que eu tenha conseguido organizar a vossa ida para uma terra muito semelhante a esta - uma terra de belas searas, de belos vinhedos, uma terra de abundância.18 Não deixem pois que Ezequias vos defraude, afirmando-vos que o Senhor vos livrará dos meus exércitos. Será que os deuses das outras nações alguma vez puderam ser vitoriosos sobre os soldados do rei da Assíria?19 Não se lembram do que fiz a Hamate e a Arpade? E os seus deuses alguma vez puderam salvá-los? E quanto a Sefarvaim e a Samaria? Onde estão agora os seus deuses?20 De todos os deuses destas terras, qual terá sido aquele que jamais pôde livrar o seu povo do meu poder? Digam ao menos - se puderem - o nome de um só! E pensam vocês que esse vosso Deus pode livrar Jerusalém da minha mão? Não sejam inconscientes!21 Mas o povo permaneceu calado, e não lhe respondeu uma só palavra, pois que Ezequias tinha-lhes dito para nada retorquirem. Então Eliaquim (o filho de Hilquias), primeiro-ministro, assim como Sebna, escrivão real, e Joá voltaram para Ezequias com as vestes rasgadas às tiras, em sinal de profunda tristeza, e contaram-lhe tudo o que tinha acontecido.

1 Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and took them.2 And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem against king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field.3 Then came forth to him Eliakim, Hilkiah's son, who was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph's son, the recorder.4 And Rabshakeh said to them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this in which thou trustest?5 I say, sayest thou (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?6 Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; on which if a man lean, it will enter his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.7 But if thou shalt say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?8 Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou canst on thy part set riders upon them.9 How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?10 And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.11 Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah to Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jew's language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.12 But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may devour their vilest excretions with you?13 Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jew's language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.14 Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he will not be able to deliver you.15 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, the LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.16 Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig-tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;17 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.18 Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?20 Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?21 But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.22 Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
