1 Vejam! O Senhor está a transtornar a terra de Judá e a fazer dela uma vastidão destruída. Reparem como a está a esvaziar inteiramente da sua população e a espalhá-la por toda a face da terra.2 Sacerdotes e povo, servos e senhores, escravas e patroas, gente que compra e que vende, gente que empresta e que pede emprestado, banqueiros e financeiros, ninguém será poupado. A terra ficará completamente vazia e será pilhada. Foi o Senhor quem o disse.4 Porque a terra sofre por causa dos pecados do povo; vai perdendo vitalidade, as searas murcham, os céus recusam a chuva.5 Toda aquela região se suja com crimes. O povo torceu as leis de Deus e transgrediu os seus mandamentos eternos.6 Por essa razão caiu sobre eles a maldição de Deus. São abandonados, destruídos pela secura. Muito poucos resistiram a isso tudo.7 Todas as alegrias da vida desaparecerão: as vindimas cessarão, não haverá mais vinho, mesmo os que tinham carácter folgazão não farão mais do que suspirar e gemer.8 Não se ouvirão mais os sons melodiosos da harpa e o ritmo alegre dos tambores. Acabaram-se os dias de alegria. Não haverá mais folguedos de vinho e alegria; as bebidas fortes se farão amargas na boca.10 A cidade está toda num caos. Cada casa, cada loja, está trancada a cadeados para impedir os assaltantes.11 Formam-se ajuntamentos nas ruas de gente que pede vinho. A alegria é verdadeiramente coisa bem rara. O contentamento foi banido da terra.12 A cidade foi deixada em ruínas; as portas de entrada foram derrubadas. Por toda a terra a situação é idêntica - apenas um pequeno resto de gente foi poupado.14 Mas todos esses que foram poupados gritarão e cantarão de alegria.15 Os que estão no ocidente, do lado do mar, louvarão a majestade de Deus, e os que estão a oriente responder-lhes-ão com cânticos à sua glória!16 Ouçam-nos cantar ao Senhor desde as extremidades da terra, enaltecendo aquele que só ele é justo!Contudo o meu coração está pesado de tristeza, porque o mal ainda prevalece e a desonestidade reina por toda a parte.17 Terror e prisões do inferno é o que vocês merecem, ó habitantes da Terra.18 Quando fugirem de pavor cairão numa fossa, e se escaparem da fossa serão apanhados numa armadilha, porque esta destruição que vos cai em cima vem do céu. Mas até em baixo a terra vos treme. Todo o mundo está profundamente perturbado, caótico; tudo está ao abandono e perdido.19 É como se o mundo inteiro estivesse cambaleando como um embriagado; parece uma tenda sacudida sob uma forte tempestade.20 Cairá, mas não mais se levantará, porque os seus pecados são de extrema gravidade.21 Nesse dia o Senhor castigará os anjos caídos nos céus, assim como os chefes orgulhosos na Terra.22 Serão cercados e feitos prisioneiros, postos numa masmorra até serem julgados e condenados.23 Então o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais porá o seu trono em Sião e governará gloriosamente em Jerusalém, na presença dos anciãos do povo. A sua glória será de tal maneira intensa que o esplendor do Sol e da lua cheia se esvanecerão.

1 Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad its inhabitants.2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of interest, so with the giver of interest to him.3 The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word.4 The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish.5 The earth also is defiled under its inhabitants; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.6 Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell in it are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.7 The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merry-hearted do sigh.8 The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth.9 They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.10 The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may enter.11 There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone.12 In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction.13 When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the shaking of an olive-tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done.14 They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the LORD, they shall cry aloud from the sea.15 Wherefore glorify ye the LORD in the fires, even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the isles of the sea.16 From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous. But I said, My leanness, my leanness, woe to me! the treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously; yes, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously.17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is entirely dissolved, the earth is exceedingly moved.20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression of it shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.22 And they shall be gathered, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign on mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.
