1 Consolem o meu povo, diz o vosso Deus. Falem ternamente a Jerusalém e digam-lhe que os seus dias de tristeza já se foram. Os seus pecados são perdoados, e o Senhor dar-lhe-á duas vezes mais em bênçãos quanto lhe deu antes em castigos.3 Ouçam! Eu ouvi a voz de alguém gritando: Façam um caminho para o Senhor no deserto. Façam-lhe um caminho direito, plano. Encham os vales, nivelem os montes, tornem em rectas os caminhos ondeantes da montanha, limpem as veredas pedregosas e tapem-lhes as covas.5 A glória do Senhor será vista por toda a raça humana junta. Foi o Senhor quem falou - assim acontecerá.6 Disse a voz: Clama bem alto!O que é que eu hei-de clamar?, perguntei.Que o ser humano é como a erva que morre depressa, e que toda a sua beleza murcha, como as flores que morrem. A erva seca, as flores murcham sob o sopro de Deus. E assim é com a frágil criatura humana.8 A erva seca, as flores murcham, contudo, a palavra do Senhor nosso Deus permanece para sempre.9 Tu, ó anunciador de boas novas a Jerusalém, grita do cimo das montanhas! Grita bem alto, não tenhas receio, e diz às cidades de Judá: O vosso Deus está a chegar!10 Sim, o Senhor Deus vem aí com grande poder. Governará com domínio eficaz. Dará a cada um a recompensa que merece justamente.11 Alimentará o seu rebanho como um pastor; levará nos braços os cordeirinhos, e guiará mansamente as que amamentam.12 Quem mais é que tem poder para segurar nas suas mãos os oceanos e para conhecer os céus em todas as suas medidas? Quem mais conhece perfeitamente o peso de toda a Terra, e das montanhas e cordilheiras?13 Quem seria capaz de dar conselhos ao Espírito do Senhor, de ser seu ensinador ou guia?14 Alguma vez ele terá precisado de ser instruído quanto ao que é recto, ao que é melhor? É evidente que não.15 Porque todos os povos do mundo são nada em relação a ele; são como uma gota de água no oceano, como um grão de pó no prato duma balança. Pega nas ilhas como se fossem coisa sem peso algum.16 Todas as florestas do Líbano não formariam combustível suficiente para consumir um sacrifício bastante grande para o honrar; nem tão-pouco os seus animais todos, nunca chegariam para oferecer algo de digno ao nosso Deus.17 Todas as nações são como nada para ele; aos seus olhos são até menos que nada - são só vazio e nulidade.18 Como se poderá então descrever Deus? Com que é que poderá ser comparado?19 Com algum ídolo? Com um ídolo qualquer, feito segundo um molde, pintado de tinta dourada, com cadeias prateadas à volta do pescoço?20 Até mesmo uma pessoa qualquer, se por acaso não tiver dinheiro bastante para comprar um ídolo desses, pode pegar num pedaço de madeira e talhar a imagem dum ídolo que se transformará no seu deus - um deus que aliás nem sequer se pode mexer!21 Serão vocês assim tão ignorantes? Serão assim tão surdos às palavras de Deus - palavras essas que já foram dadas desde que os mundos existem? Nunca ouviram nem compreenderam isso?22 É Deus quem se senta acima do globo da Terra, cujos habitantes para ele fazem figura de minúsculos gafanhotos. É ele quem estende os céus como uma cortina, como se fizesse com ela a sua tenda.23 Reduz a nada os grandes senhores desta terra, torna inúteis os seus governantes.24 Dificilmente se estabilizam e criam raízes se Deus soprar sobre eles; e as suas obras perdem então todo o valor, levando-as o vento como à palha.25 Com quem me hão-de comparar então? Quem será semelhante a mim?, pergunta aquele que é o Santo.26 Vejam os céus! Quem foi que criou todas essas estrelas? Tal como um pastor conduz as suas ovelhas, chamando cada uma pelo seu nome, e as conta para ver se alguma se terá perdido ou desviado, assim Deus faz com os astros!27 Ó Jacob, ó Israel, como podes tu dizer que o Senhor não vê as tuas aflições, que não se interessa em te fazer justiça?28 Não compreendes? Não sabes tu já que o eterno Deus, o criador das mais distantes partes da Terra, nunca fica cansado nem desfalecido? Ninguém jamais conseguirá descobrir as profundidades do seu pensamento.29 Dá novas forças ao que está cansado, multiplica as energias daquele que está fraco.30 Até mesmo a juventude se cansará; há jovens que acabarão por desistir.31 Mas os que confiam no Senhor renovarão as suas forças. Subirão com asas como águias; correrão e não se cansarão; andarão sem desfalecerem.

1 Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.2 Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry to her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received from the LORD'S hand double for all her sins.3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain.5 And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh together shall see it: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.6 The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all its goodliness is as the flower of the field:7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall shall stand forever.9 O Zion, that bringest good tidings, go up upon the high mountain: O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say to the cities of Judah, Behold your God!10 Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm will rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd: he will gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and will gently lead those that are with young.12 Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and measured heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?13 Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counselor hath taught him?14 With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and showed to him the way of understanding?15 Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing.16 And Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor the beasts of it sufficient for a burnt-offering.17 All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity.18 To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare to him?19 The workman melteth a graven image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it over with gold, and casteth silver chains.20 He that is so impoverished that he hath no oblation chooseth a tree that will not rot; he seeketh for himself a skillful workman to prepare a graven image that shall not be moved.21 Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth?22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:23 That bringeth the princes to nothing; he maketh the judges of the earth as vanity.24 Yes, they shall not be planted; yes, they shall not be sown: yes, their stock shall not take root in the earth: and he shall also blow upon them, and they shall wither, and the whirlwind shall take them away as stubble.25 To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equaled? saith the Holy One.26 Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names, by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.27 Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over by my God?28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.
