1 Ai dos juízes injustos e dos que decretam leis injustas, que não deixam haver justiça para os pobres, para as viúvas e para os órfãos. Sim, porque a verdade é que até chegam a roubar as viúvas e os órfãos.3 Que farão vocês quando vier castigar-vos nesse dia em que vos trouxer a desolação duma terra distante? Para quem hão-de vocês voltar-se a pedir ajuda? Onde vão vocês pôr os vossos tesouros de forma a ficarem em segurança?4 Eu, em todo o caso não vos ajudarei; andarão antes aos tropeções por entre os prisioneiros e cairão por entre os mortos. Mas ainda assim a minha ira não ficará satisfeita; antes o meu punho se manterá suspenso, pronto a cair-vos em cima.5 Ai da Assíria, a vara da minha ira; a sua força militar é a minha arma contra esta nação sem Deus, condenada e amaldiçoada. Ela fará deles escravos, saqueá-los-á e os pisará como o pó debaixo dos pés.7 Mas o rei da Assíria não saberá que fui eu quem o mandou. Ele pensará simplesmente que está a atacar o meu povo como parte do seu plano de conquista do mundo. E declarará que cada um dos seus príncipes será brevemente um rei, a reger cada uma das terras conquistadas.9 Destruiremos Calno tal como fizemos com Carquemis, dirá ele. E Hamate cairá como tinha caído antes Arpade; Samaria será arrasada da mesma forma que Damasco. Sim, acabámos com muitos reinos cujos ídolos eram muito maiores do que os de Jerusalém e de Samaria. Por isso, quando tivermos derrotado Samaria e os seus ídolos, também havemos de destruir Jerusalém mais os ídolos dela.12 Depois do Senhor ter usado o rei da Assíria para realizar os seus planos, então se voltará contra os assírios para os castigar igualmente a eles, porque são gente altiva e orgulhosa.13 Gabam-se dizendo: Foi com todo o nosso poder e com a nossa sabedoria que ganhámos estas guerras todas. Somos grandes e célebres. Com a nossa própria força derrubámos muralhas, vencemos povos e pilhámos os seus tesouros. Pela nossa grandeza assaltámos os ninhos de riqueza deles; e acumulámos reinos conquistados, tal como o camponês junta os seus ovos; ninguém ousa mexer um dedo sequer, ou abrir a boca para dizer uma palavra contra nós!15 Mas o Senhor diz: Será normal que o machado se gabe de ter mais poder do que aquele que o emprega? E a serra, será ela mais poderosa do que o serrador? Poderá uma vara bater sem que uma mão a mova? Uma cana é capaz de andar sozinha?16 Por causa de toda essa tua lisonja, ó rei da Assíria, o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais mandará uma praga que se disseminará no meio dessa tua tropa orgulhosa, que os abaterá.17 Deus, que é a luz e o santo de Israel, se fará como uma chama e como fogo que os destruirá. Numa só noite fará arder esses espinheiros, essas sarças que são os assírios que destruíram a terra de Israel. O vasto exército da Assíria é como uma imensa floresta, e será mesmo assim destruída. O Senhor os desfará, corpo e alma; serão como uma pessoa doente que perde os sentidos. Só uns poucos escaparão, de todo esse poderoso exército; serão tão poucos que uma criança os saberá contar!20 Então por fim, os que ficarem, de Israel e de Judá, se entregarão ao Senhor, o santo de Israel, e não mais temerão os assírios.21 Um resto deles se voltará para o Deus poderoso, ainda que Israel seja agora tão numeroso como a areia das praias, apenas alguns deles ficarão para se converterem, nesse tempo.23 Deus decidiu justamente destruir o seu povo. Sim, está já decidido pelo Deus dos exércitos consumi-los.24 Contudo o Senhor Deus dos exércitos celestiais diz: Ó meu povo de Jerusalém, não tenhas receio dos assírios quando vos oprimirem como vos fizeram os egípcios há muito tempo atrás. Não durará muito isso. Ao fim de pouco tempo a minha ira contra vocês acabará e então me levantarei contra eles e os destruirei.26 O Senhor dos exércitos celestiais enviará o seu anjo para os matar, tal como aconteceu quando Gedeão triunfou sobre os midianitas junto à rocha de Orebe, ou quando Deus lançou as tropas egípcias no mar.27 Nesse dia Deus acabará com a escravidão do seu povo; quebrará o jugo que pesa sobre os seus pescoços; será destruído por decreto seu.28 Vejam! Estão já a chegar os poderosos exércitos da Assíria! Já se encontram em Aliate; agora em Nigrom; fazem já armazenamento do seu equipamento militar em Micmás, e estão a passar o desfiladeiro. Vão acampar em Geba para aí passarem a noite. A cidade de Ramá já treme de medo, e o povo de Gibeá, a cidade de Saúl, foge para salvar a vida.30 É natural que grites de terror, ó povo de Galim. Avisa bem alto Laís, porque o grande exército se aproxima. Ó pobre Anatote, que destino desgraçado vai ser o teu!31 O povo de Madmena já fugiu todo, e os habitantes de Gebim preparam-se para debandar.32 Mas o inimigo pára em Nobe e aí fica o resto do dia. E daí acena com o punho contra Jerusalém no Monte Sião.33 Mas, olhem, olhem! O Senhor, o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais está a cortar pela base essa poderosa árvore! Está a destruir todo esse vasto exército, tanto os das linhas de ataque como os da retaguarda, tanto oficiais como soldados. Ele, o poderoso, abaterá a força do inimigo tal como o lenhador abate as árvores das florestas do Líbano.

1 Woe to them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed;2 To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless!3 And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?4 Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.5 O Assyrian, the rod of my anger, and the staff in their hand is my indignation.6 I will send him against a hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.7 Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few.8 For he saith, Are not my princes altogether kings?9 Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus?10 As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images excelled them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;11 Shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?12 Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.13 For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man:14 And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathereth eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.15 Shall the ax boast itself against him that heweth with it? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that moveth it? as if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it, or as if the staff should lift itself, as if it were no wood.16 Therefore will the Lord, the LORD of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he will kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.17 And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;18 And shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and they shall be as when a standard-bearer fainteth.19 And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them.20 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as have escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again lean upon him that smote them; but shall lean upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.21 The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God.22 For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.23 For the Lord GOD of hosts will make a consumption, even determined, in the midst of all the land.24 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.25 For yet a very little while, and the indignation shall cease, and my anger in their destruction.26 And the LORD of hosts will raise up a scourge for him according to the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb: and as his rod was upon the sea, so shall he lift it up after the manner of Egypt.27 And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.28 He is come to Aiath, he is passed to Migron; at Michmash he hath laid up his furniture.29 They have gone over the passage: they have taken up their lodging at Geba; Ramah is afraid; Gibeah of Saul hath fled.30 Lift up thy voice, O daughter of Gallim: cause it to be heard to Laish, O poor Anathoth.31 Madmenah is removed; the inhabitants of Gebim gather themselves to flee.32 As yet shall he remain at Nob that day: he shall shake his hand against the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.33 Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts will lop the bough with terror: and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled.34 And he shall cut down the thickets of the forests with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.
