1 Ai de vocês, assírios, que tudo destruíram à vossa volta, e que nunca sentiram vocês mesmos o efeito da destruição. Estão contando que os outros respeitem as promessas que vos fizeram, e vocês próprios são os primeiros a faltar à palavra dada! Agora, pois, serão vocês traídos e destruídos.2 Mas quanto a nós, ó Senhor, pedimos-te que sejas misericordioso, porque esperámos por ti. Sê cada dia a nossa força e a nossa salvação no tempo de aflição.3 O inimigo foge ao som da tua voz. Quando te levantas, fogem as nações.4 Tal como os gafanhotos em bandos, caindo sobre os campos e sobre as vinhas, tudo devastam, assim Jerusalém saqueará o derrotado exército da Assíria.5 O Senhor é grande, pois habita lá no alto! Fará de Jerusalém o lar da justiça, da bondade e da rectidão.6 Haverá estabilidade e reservas seguras e abundantes de salvação para Judá, assim como de sabedoria, de conhecimento e de reverência por Deus.7 Mas presentemente os teus embaixadores choram com amargo desapontamento, porque a Assíria recusou o clamor de paz que lhe foi dirigido.8 As tuas estradas estão abandonadas e em estado lamentável; os viajantes, os que por elas pretendem passar, preferem tomar por atalhos. Os Assírios violaram o seu tratado de paz e desprezam em absoluto as promessas feitas mesmo na presença de testemunhas; não têm respeito por ninguém.9 Toda a terra de Israel está perturbada; o Líbano foi destruído; Sarom tornou-se uma terra desabitada; Basã e Carmelo foram pilhados.10 Mas o Senhor diz: Levantar-me-ei e mostrarei o meu poder e a minha força.11 Vocês, Assírios, não ganharão nada com todos os vossos esforços. A vossa própria respiração se fará em fogo e vos matará.12 Os vossos exércitos arderão como cal, como espinheiros que se arracam e lançam no fogo.13 Ouçam o que eu fiz, ó nações distantes! Vocês também, que estão perto - reconheçam o meu poder!14 Os pecadores de entre o meu povo tremem de medo. Quem é que de nós, clamam eles, pode aqui viver na presença deste eterno fogo consumidor?15 Pois eu vos direi então quem é que pode aqui viver: Todos os que são honestos e rectos, que rejeitam lucros de actos fraudulentos, que fecham as mãos ao suborno, que recusam dar ouvidos a conspirações de assassínios, que desviam os olhos de tudo o que os incita a praticar o mal. São estes os que poderão aqui viver. As rochas das montanhas serão as suas fortalezas; nunca lhes faltará alimento nem água, quanta desejarem.17 Os vossos olhos verão o rei na sua majestade, assim como as terras distantes lá do céu.18 Recordarás este tempo de terror em que os oficiais assírios, do lado de fora dos muros, contam as tuas torres, fazendo estimativas a tudo quanto obterão da tua cidade conquistada.19 Mas é que dum momento para o outro eles ir-se-ão. Este terrível e violento povo, com a sua língua estranha e incompreensível, desaparecerá.20 E então verás Jerusalém em paz, como um lugar onde Deus é adorado, uma cidade calma e estável.21 O Senhor glorioso será para nós como uma fronteira formada por um largo rio de protecção, que nunhum inimigo poderá atravessar.22 Pois o Senhor é o nosso juiz, o nosso legislador e o nosso rei. Cuidará de nós e nos salvará.23 As velas dos navios inimigos pendem soltas de mastros quebrados; a aparelhagem está inutilizada. Os seus tesouros serão partilhados pelo povo de Deus; até os coxos terão a sua parte.24 O povo de Israel não dirá mais: Estamos doentes e desamparados, porque o Senhor lhes perdoará os pecados e os abençoará.

1 Woe to thee that layest waste, and thou wast not laid waste; and dealest treacherously, and they dealt not treacherously with thee! when thou shalt cease to lay waste, thou shalt be wasted; and when thou shalt make an end to deal treacherously, they shall deal treacherously with thee.2 O LORD, be gracious to us; we have waited for thee: be thou their arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble.3 At the noise of the tumult the people fled; at the lifting up of thyself the nations were scattered.4 And your spoil shall be gathered like the gathering of the caterpillar: as the running to and fro of locusts shall he run upon them.5 The LORD is exalted; for he dwelleth on high: he hath filled Zion with judgment and righteousness.6 And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure.7 Behold, their valiant ones shall cry without: the embassadors of peace shall weep bitterly.8 The highways lie waste, the way-faring man ceaseth: he hath broken the covenant, he hath despised the cities, he regardeth no man.9 The earth mourneth and languisheth: Lebanon is ashamed and hewn down: Sharon is like a wilderness; and Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits.10 Now will I rise, saith the LORD; now will I be exalted; now will I lift up myself.11 Ye shall conceive chaff, ye shall bring forth stubble: your breath, as fire, shall devour you.12 And the people shall be as the burnings of lime: as thorns cut up shall they be burned in the fire.13 Ye that are far off, hear what I have done; and ye that are near, acknowledge my might.14 The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?15 He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil;16 He shall dwell on high: his place of defense shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.17 Thy eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold the land that is very far off.18 Thy heart shall meditate terror. Where is the scribe? where is the receiver? where is he that counted the towers?19 Thou shalt not see a fierce people, a people of deeper speech than thou canst perceive; of a stammering tongue, that thou canst not understand.20 Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnities: thy eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down; not one of its stakes shall ever be removed, neither shall any of its cords be broken.21 But there the glorious LORD will be to us a place of broad rivers and streams; in which shall go no galley with oars, neither shall gallant ship pass through it.22 For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us.23 Thy tacklings are loosed; they could not well strengthen their mast, they could not spread the sail: then is the prey of a great spoil divided; the lame take the prey.24 And the inhabitants shall not say, I am sick: the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity.
