1 And afterwards Moses and Aaron went in, and said to Pharaoh, Thus saith Jehovah, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel, Let my people go that they may celebrate a feast to me in the wilderness. 2 And Pharaoh said, Who is Jehovah, to whose voice I am to hearken to let Israel go? I do not know Jehovah, neither will I let Israel go.

3 And they said, The God*GodHebrew: Elohim of the Hebrews has met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to Jehovah our God*GodHebrew: Elohim lest he fall upon us with pestilence or with sword. 4 And the king of Egypt said to them, Why do ye, Moses and Aaron, wish to have the people go off from their works? Away, to your burdens! 5 And Pharaoh said, Behold the people of the land are now many, and ye wish to make them rest from their burdens. 6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying, 7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves. 8 And the number of the bricks they have made heretofore shall ye lay upon them: ye shall not diminish any of it, for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God*GodHebrew: Elohim9 Let them put heavier labour on the men, that they may be taken up with it, and not regard vain words.

10 And the taskmasters of the people and their officers went out and spoke to the people, saying, Thus says Pharaoh: I will not give you straw: 11 go ye, get yourselves straw where ye may find it; but none of your work shall be diminished. 12 And the people were scattered abroad throughout the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw. 13 And the taskmasters urged them, saying, Fulfil your labours, the daily work, as when there was straw. 14 And the officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and it was said, Why have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick, both yesterday and to-day, as heretofore?

15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, saying, Why dost thou deal thus with thy bondmen? 16 There is no straw given to thy bondmen, and they say to us, Make brick; and behold, thy bondmen are beaten, but it is the fault of thy people. 17 And he said, Ye are idle, idle! therefore ye say, Let us go and sacrifice to Jehovah. 18 And now go — work! and straw shall not be given you, and ye shall deliver the measure of bricks. 19 And the officers of the children of Israel saw that it stood ill with them, because it was said, Ye shall not diminish anything from your bricks, the daily work. 20 And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood there to meet them, as they came out from Pharaoh. 21 And they said to them, Jehovah look upon you and judge, that ye have made our odour to stink in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his bondmen, putting a sword into their hand to kill us! 22 And Moses returned to Jehovah, and said, Lord, why hast thou done evil to this people? why now hast thou sent me? 23 For ever since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all!

1 Moise și Aaron s-au dus apoi la Faraon și i-au zis: „Așa vorbește Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel: ‘Lasă pe poporul Meu să plece, ca să prăznuiască*Cap. 10:9. în pustie un praznic în cinstea Mea.’" 2 Faraon a răspuns: „Cine*2 Împ. 18:35.Iov 21:15. este Domnul, ca să ascult de glasul Lui și să las pe Israel să plece? Eu nu cunosc pe Domnul și nu voi*Cap. 3:19. lăsa pe Israel să plece." 3 Ei au zis: „Ni S-a arătat*Cap. 3:18. Dumnezeul evreilor. Dă-ne voie să facem un drum de trei zile în pustie, ca să aducem jertfe Domnului, pentru ca să nu ne bată cu ciumă sau cu sabie." 4 Și împăratul Egiptului le-a zis: „Moise și Aaron, pentru ce abateți poporul de la lucrul lui? Plecați la lucrările*Cap. 1:11. voastre."

5 Faraon a zis: „Iată că poporul acesta s-a*Cap. 1:7,9. înmulțit acum în țară, și voi mai voiți să-l faceți să-și înceteze lucrările?" 6 Și chiar în ziua aceea, Faraon a dat următoarea poruncă isprăvniceilor*Cap. 1:11. norodului și logofeților: 7 „Să nu mai dați poporului paie ca mai înainte pentru facerea cărămizilor, ci să se ducă singuri să strângă paie. 8 Totuși să le cereți același număr de cărămizi pe care le făceau mai înainte; să nu le scădeți nimic din ele, căci sunt niște leneși, de aceea strigă mereu: ‘Haidem să aducem jertfe Dumnezeului nostru!’ 9 Să se dea mult de lucru oamenilor acestora, ca să aibă de lucru și să nu mai umble după năluci." 10 Isprăvniceii poporului și logofeții au venit și au spus poporului: „Așa vorbește Faraon: ‘Nu vă mai dau paie; 11 duceți-vă singuri de vă luați paie de unde veți găsi, dar nu vi se scade nimic din lucrul vostru.’" 12 Poporul s-a răspândit în toată țara Egiptului, ca să strângă miriște în loc de paie. 13 Isprăvniceii îi sileau zicând: „Isprăviți-vă lucrul zi de zi, ca atunci când erau paie!" 14 Au bătut chiar pe logofeții copiilor lui Israel, puși peste ei de isprăvniceii lui Faraon. „Pentru ce", li se zicea, „n-ați isprăvit ieri și azi, ca mai înainte, numărul de cărămizi care vă fusese hotărât?" 15 Logofeții copiilor lui Israel s-au dus să se plângă la Faraon și i-au zis: „Pentru ce te porți așa cu robii tăi? 16 Robilor tăi nu li se mai dau paie ca mai înainte, și totuși ni se spune: ‘Faceți cărămizi!’ Ba încă, robii tăi sunt și bătuți, ca și când poporul tău ar fi vinovat." 17 Faraon a răspuns: „Sunteți niște leneși și niște trântori! De aceea ziceți: ‘Haidem să aducem jertfe Domnului!’ 18 Acum, duceți-vă îndată de lucrați; nu vi se vor da paie și veți face același număr de cărămizi."

19 Logofeții copiilor lui Israel au văzut în ce stare nenorocită erau când li se zicea: „Nu vi se scade nimic din numărul de cărămizi, ci în fiecare zi să faceți lucrul cuvenit unei zile." 20 Când au ieșit de la Faraon, au întâlnit pe Moise și pe Aaron, care îi așteptau. 21 Și*Cap. 6:9. le-au zis: „Să vă vadă Domnul și să judece! Voi ne-ați făcut urâți lui Faraon și slujitorilor lui; ba încă le-ați dat sabia în mână ca să ne omoare." 22 Moise s-a întors la Domnul și a zis: „Doamne, pentru ce ai făcut un astfel de rău poporului acestuia? Pentru ce m-ai trimis? 23 De când m-am dus la Faraon ca să-i vorbesc în Numele Tău, el face și mai rău poporului acestuia, și n-ai izbăvit pe poporul Tău."
