1 And Jacob went on his way; and the angels of God*GodHebrew: Elohim met him. 2 And when Jacob saw them he said, This is the camp of God*GodHebrew: Elohim And he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

3 And Jacob sent messengers before his face to Esau his brother, into the land of Seir, the fields of Edom. 4 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak to my lord, to Esau: Thy servant Jacob speaks thus — With Laban have I sojourned and tarried until now; 5 and I have oxen, and asses, sheep, and bondmen, and bondwomen; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favour in thine eyes. 6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother, to Esau; and he also is coming to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid, and was distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the sheep and the cattle and the camels, into two troops. 8 And he said, If Esau come to the one troop and smite it, then the other troop which is left shall escape.

9 And Jacob said, God*GodHebrew: Elohim of my father Abraham, and God*GodHebrew: Elohim of my father Isaac, Jehovah, who saidst unto me: Return into thy country and to thy kindred, and I will do thee good, 10 — I am too small for all the loving-kindness and all the faithfulness that thou hast shewn unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I am become two troops. 11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and smite me, and the mother with the children. 12 And thou saidst, I will certainly deal well with thee, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

13 And he lodged there that night; and took of what came to his hand a gift for Esau his brother — 14 two hundred she-goats, and twenty he-goats; two hundred ewes, and twenty rams; 15 thirty milch camels with their colts; forty kine, and ten bulls; twenty she-asses, and ten young asses. 16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself; and he said to his servants, Go on before me, and put a space between drove and drove. 17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meets thee, and asks thee, saying, Whose art thou, and where goest thou, and whose are these before thee? 18 — then thou shalt say, Thy servant Jacob’s: it is a gift sent to my lord, to Esau. And behold, he also is behind us. 19 And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, According to this word shall ye speak to Esau when ye find him. 20 And, moreover, ye shall say, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will propitiate him with the gift that goes before me, and afterwards I will see his face: perhaps he will accept me. 21 And the gift went over before him; and he himself lodged that night in the camp. 22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two maidservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford of the Jabbok; 23 and he took them and led them over the river, and led over what he had.

24 And Jacob remained alone; and a man wrestled with him until the rising of the dawn. 25 And when he saw that he did not prevail against him, he touched the joint of his thigh; and the joint of Jacob’s thigh was dislocated as he wrestled with him. 26 And he said, Let me go, for the dawn ariseth. And he said, I will not let thee go except thou bless me. 27 And he said to him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. 28 And he said, Thy name shall not henceforth be called Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast wrestled with God*GodHebrew: Elohim and with men, and hast prevailed. 29 And Jacob asked and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, How is it that thou askest after my name? And he blessed him there. 30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel — For I have seen God*GodHebrew: Elohim face to face, and my life has been preserved. 31 And as he passed over Peniel, the sun rose upon him; and he limped upon his hip. 32 Therefore the children of Israel do not eat of the sinew that is over the joint of the thigh, to this day; because he touched the joint of Jacob’s thigh — the sinew.

1 Iacov și-a văzut de drum și l-au întâlnit îngerii*Ps. 91:11.Evr. 1:14. lui Dumnezeu. 2 Când i-a văzut, Iacov a zis: „Aceasta este tabăra*Ios. 5:14.Ps. 103:21;148:2.Luca 2:13. lui Dumnezeu!" De aceea a pus locului aceluia numele Mahanaim (Tabără îndoită). 3 Iacov a trimis înainte niște soli la fratele său Esau, în țara Seir*Cap. 33:14,16., în ținutul lui*Cap. 36:6-8.Deut. 2:5.Ios. 24:4. Edom. 4 El le-a dat porunca următoare: „Iată*Prov. 15:1. ce să spuneți domnului meu Esau: ‘Așa vorbește robul tău Iacov: «Am locuit la Laban și am rămas la el până acum; 5 am*Cap. 30:43. boi, măgari, oi, robi și roabe și trimit să dea de știre lucrul acesta domnului meu, ca*Cap. 33:8,15. să capăt trecere înaintea ta.»’" 6 Solii s-au întors înapoi la Iacov și au zis: „Ne-am dus la fratele tău Esau, și el vine*Cap. 33:1. înaintea ta cu patru sute de oameni." 7 Iacov s-a înspăimântat*Cap. 35:3. foarte mult și l-a apucat groaza. A împărțit în două tabere oamenii pe care-i avea cu el, oile, boii și cămilele 8 și a zis: „Dacă vine Esau împotriva uneia din tabere și o bate, tabăra care va rămâne va putea să scape."

9 Iacov*Ps. 50:15. a zis: „Dumnezeul*Cap. 28:13. tatălui meu Avraam, Dumnezeul tatălui meu Isaac! Tu, Doamne, care*Cap. 31:3,13. mi-ai zis: ‘Întoarce-te în țara ta și în locul tău de naștere și voi îngriji ca să-ți meargă bine!’ 10 Eu sunt prea mic pentru toate îndurările*Cap. 24:27. și pentru toată credincioșia pe care ai arătat-o față de robul Tău, căci am trecut Iordanul acesta numai cu toiagul*Iov 8:7. meu, și iată că acum fac două tabere. 11 Izbăvește-mă*Ps. 59:1,2., Te rog, din mâna fratelui meu, din mâna lui Esau! Căci mă tem de el, ca să nu vină și să mă lovească, pe mine, pe mame*Osea 10:14. și pe copii. 12 Și Tu*Cap. 28:13-15. ai zis: ‘Eu voi îngriji ca să-ți meargă bine și-ți voi face sămânța ca nisipul mării, care, de mult ce este, nu se poate număra.’"

13 Iacov a petrecut noaptea în locul acela. A luat din ce mai avea cu el și a pus deoparte, ca dar*Cap. 43:11.Prov. 18:16. pentru fratele său Esau: 14 două sute de capre și douăzeci de țapi, două sute de oi și douăzeci de berbeci, 15 treizeci de cămile alăptătoare cu mânjii lor, patruzeci de vaci și zece tauri, douăzeci de măgărițe și zece măgăruși. 16 Le-a dat robilor săi, turmă cu turmă, deosebit, și a poruncit robilor săi: „Treceți înaintea mea și lăsați o depărtare între fiecare turmă." 17 A dat celui dintâi porunca următoare: „Când te va întâlni fratele meu Esau și te va întreba: ‘Al cui ești? Unde te duci? Și a cui este turma aceasta dinaintea ta?’ 18 să răspunzi: ‘A robului tău Iacov; ea este un dar trimis domnului meu Esau, și el însuși vine în urma noastră.’" 19 A dat aceeași poruncă celui de al doilea, celui de al treilea și tuturor celor ce mânau turmele: „Așa să vorbiți domnului meu Esau când îl veți întâlni. 20 Să spuneți: ‘Iată, robul tău Iacov vine și el după noi.’" Căci își zicea el: „Îl voi potoli*Prov. 21:14. cu darul acesta care merge înaintea mea; în urmă îl voi vedea față în față, și poate că mă va primi cu bunăvoință." 21 Astfel, darul a trecut înainte, iar el a rămas în tabără în noaptea aceea. 22 Tot în noaptea aceea s-a sculat, a luat pe cele două neveste ale lui, pe cele două roabe și pe cei unsprezece copii ai lui și a trecut*Deut. 3:16. vadul Iabocului. 23 I-a luat, i-a trecut pârâul și a trecut tot ce avea.

24 Iacov însă a rămas singur. Atunci, un om s-a luptat*Osea 12:3,4.Efes. 6:12. cu el până în revărsatul zorilor. 25 Văzând că nu-l poate birui, omul acesta l-a lovit la încheietura*Mat. 26:41.2 Cor. 12:7. coapsei, așa că i s-a scrântit încheietura coapsei lui Iacov, pe când se lupta cu el. 26 Omul acela*Luca 24:28. a zis: „Lasă-mă să plec, căci se revarsă zorile." Dar Iacov a răspuns: „Nu Te*Osea 12:4. voi lăsa să pleci până nu mă vei binecuvânta." 27 Omul acela i-a zis: „Cum îți este numele?" „Iacov", a răspuns el. 28 Apoi a zis: „Numele*Cap. 35:10.2 Împ. 17:34. tău nu va mai fi Iacov, ci te vei chema Israel (Cel ce luptă cu Dumnezeu), căci ai luptat*Osea 12:3,4. cu Dumnezeu și cu oameni*Cap. 25:31;27:33. și ai fost biruitor." 29 Iacov l-a întrebat: „Spune-mi, Te rog, numele Tău." El a răspuns: „Pentru ce*Jud. 13:18. Îmi ceri numele?" Și l-a binecuvântat acolo. 30 Iacov a pus locului aceluia numele Peniel (Fața lui Dumnezeu); „căci", a zis el, „am*Cap. 16:13.Exod 24:11;33:20.Deut. 5:24.Jud. 6:22;13:22.Is. 6:5. văzut pe Dumnezeu față în față, și totuși am scăpat cu viață". 31 Răsărea soarele când a trecut pe lângă Peniel. Însă Iacov șchiopăta din coapsă. 32 Iată de ce, până în ziua de azi, israeliții nu mănâncă vâna de la încheietura coapsei, căci Dumnezeu a lovit pe Iacov la încheietura coapsei în vână.
