1 And Sarai Abram’s wife did not bear him children. And she had an Egyptian maidservant; and her name was Hagar. 2 And Sarai said to Abram, Behold now, Jehovah has shut me up, that I do not bear. Go in, I pray thee, to my maidservant: it may be that I shall be built up by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. 3 And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar, the Egyptian, her maidservant, at the end of ten years that Abram had dwelt in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram, as his wife.

4 And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was lightly esteemed in her eyes. 5 And Sarai said to Abram, My wrong be on thee! I have given my maidservant into thy bosom; and now she sees that she has conceived, I am lightly esteemed in her eyes. Jehovah judge between me and thee! 6 And Abram said to Sarai, Behold, thy maidservant is in thy hand: do to her what is good in thine eyes. And Sarai oppressed her; and she fled from her face.

7 And the Angel of Jehovah found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur. 8 And he said, Hagar, Sarai’s maidservant, whence comest thou? and whither art thou going? And she said, I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai. 9 And the Angel of Jehovah said to her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

10 And the Angel of Jehovah said to her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. 11 And the Angel of Jehovah said to her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael, because Jehovah hath hearkened to thy affliction. 12 And he will be a wild-ass of a man, his hand against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell before the face of all his brethren. 13 And she called the name of Jehovah who spoke to her, Thou art the ·God*GodHebrew: El who reveals himself, for she said, Also here have I seen after he has revealed himself. 14 Therefore the well was named Beer-lahai-roi: behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

15 And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16 And Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

Ea avea o roabă*Cap. 21:9. egipteancă, numită Agar*Gal. 4:24.. 2 Și Sarai a zis*Cap. 30:3. lui Avram: „Iată, Domnul m-a făcut*Cap. 20:18;30:2.1 Sam. 1:5,6. stearpă; intră*Cap. 30:3,9., te rog, la roaba mea; poate că voi avea copii de la ea." Avram a ascultat*Cap. 3:17. cele spuse de Sarai. 3 Atunci, Sarai, nevasta lui Avram, a luat pe egipteanca Agar, roaba ei, și a dat-o de nevastă bărbatului său, Avram, după ce Avram locuise*Cap. 12:5. ca străin zece ani în țara Canaan. 4 El a intrat la Agar, și ea a rămas însărcinată. Când s-a văzut ea însărcinată, a privit cu dispreț*2 Sam. 6:16.Prov. 30:21,23. pe stăpână-sa. 5 Și Sarai a zis lui Avram: „Asupra ta să cadă batjocura aceasta, care mi se face! Eu însămi ți-am dat în brațe pe roaba mea, și ea, când a văzut că a rămas însărcinată, m-a privit cu dispreț. Să judece*Cap. 31:53.1 Sam. 24:12. Domnul între mine și tine!" 6 Avram*Prov. 15:1.1 Pet. 3:7. a răspuns Saraiei: „Iată*Iov 2:6.Ps. 106:41,42.Ier. 38:5., roaba ta este în mâna ta; fă-i ce-ți place!" Atunci, Sarai s-a purtat rău cu ea, și Agar*Exod 2:15. a fugit de ea.

7 Îngerul Domnului a găsit-o lângă un izvor de apă în pustie, și anume lângă izvorul*Cap. 25:18. care este pe drumul ce duce la Șur*Exod 15:22.. 8 El a zis: „Agar, roaba Saraiei, de unde vii și unde te duci?" Ea a răspuns: „Fug de stăpâna mea Sarai." 9 Îngerul Domnului i-a zis: „Întoarce-te la stăpână-ta și supune-te*Tit 2:9.1 Pet. 2:18. sub mâna ei." 10 Îngerul Domnului i-a zis: „Îți voi înmulți*Cap. 17:20;21:18;25:12. foarte mult sămânța și ea va fi atât de multă la număr, că nu va putea fi numărată." 11 Îngerul Domnului i-a zis: „Iată, acum ești însărcinată și vei naște un fiu, căruia îi vei pune numele*Cap. 17:19.Mat. 1:21.Luca 1:13,31. Ismael*16:11 Ismael vine din două cuvinte, care înseamnă: Dumnezeu aude., căci Domnul a auzit mâhnirea ta. 12 El va fi ca*Cap. 21:20. un măgar sălbatic printre oameni; mâna lui va fi împotriva tuturor oamenilor, și mâna tuturor oamenilor va fi împotriva lui și va locui în*Cap. 25:18. fața tuturor fraților lui." 13 Ea a numit Numele Domnului care-i vorbise: „Tu ești Dumnezeu care mă vede*16:13 Evreiește: El-Roi.!" Căci a zis ea: „Cu adevărat, am văzut*Cap. 31:42. aici spatele Celui ce m-a văzut!" 14 De aceea, fântâna aceea s-a numit „Fântâna*Cap. 24:62;25:11. Celui Viu care mă vede*16:14 Evreiește: Lahai-Roi."; ea este între*Num. 13:26. Cades și Bared. 15 Agar*Gal. 4:22. a născut lui Avram un fiu și Avram a pus fiului pe care i l-a născut Agar numele Ismael*Vers. 11.. 16 Avram era de optzeci și șase de ani când i-a născut Agar pe Ismael.
