1 And Abraham was old, and advanced in age; and Jehovah had blessed Abraham in all things. 2 And Abraham said to his servant, the eldest of his house, who ruled over all that he had, Put thy hand, I pray thee, under my thigh, 3 and I will make thee swear by Jehovah, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of the heavens and the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of the earth, that thou take not a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am dwelling; 4 but thou shalt go to my land and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac. 5 And the servant said to him, Perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land: must I, then, bring thy son again in any case to the land from which thou hast removed? 6 And Abraham said to him, Beware that thou bring not my son thither again. 7 Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of the heavens, who took me out of my father’s house, and out of the land of my nativity, and who has spoken to me, and who has sworn to me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land — he will send his angel before thee, that thou mayest take a wife for my son thence. 8 And if the woman be not willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be quit of this my oath: only, bring not my son thither again. 9 And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore unto him concerning that matter.

10 And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; now all the treasure of his master was under his hand; and he arose and went to Aram-naharaim, to the city of Nahor. 11 And he made the camels kneel down outside the city by a well of water, at the time of the evening, when the women came out to draw water. 12 And he said, Jehovah, God*GodHebrew: Elohim of my master Abraham, meet me, I pray thee, with thy blessing this day, and deal kindly with my master Abraham. 13 Behold, I stand here by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water. 14 And let it come to pass, that the maiden to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink, and who will say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also, be she whom thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and hereby I shall know that thou hast dealt kindly with my master. 15 And it came to pass before he had ended speaking, that behold, Rebecca came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother; and she had her pitcher upon her shoulder. 16 And the maiden was very fair in countenance; a virgin, and no man had known her. And she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up. 17 And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, sip a little water out of thy pitcher. 18 And she said, Drink, my lord! And she hasted and let down her pitcher on her hand, and gave him to drink. 19 And when she had given him enough to drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have drunk enough. 20 And she hasted and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again to the well to draw water; and she drew for all his camels. 21 And the man was astonished at her, remaining silent, to know whether Jehovah had made his journey prosperous or not. 22 And it came to pass when the camels had drunk enough, that the man took a gold ring, of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands, ten shekels weight of gold, 23 and said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee. Is there room in thy father’s house for us to lodge? 24 And she said to him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor. 25 And she said to him, There is straw, and also much provender with us; also room to lodge. 26 And the man stooped, and bowed down before Jehovah, 27 and said, Blessed be Jehovah, God*GodHebrew: Elohim of my master Abraham, who has not withdrawn his loving-kindness and his faithfulness from my master; I being in the way, Jehovah has led me to the house of my master’s brethren. 28 And the maiden ran and told these things to her mother’s house.

29 And Rebecca had a brother, named Laban; and Laban ran out to the man, to the well. 30 And it came to pass when he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister’s hand, and when he heard the words of Rebecca his sister, saying, Thus spoke the man to me — that he came to the man, and behold, he was standing by the camels, by the well. 31 And he said, Come in, blessed of Jehovah! why standest thou outside? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels. 32 And the man came into the house; and he ungirded the camels, and gave the camels straw and provender, and water to wash his feet, and the feet of the men who were with him. 33 And there was set meat before him to eat; but he said, I will not eat until I have made known my business. And he said, Speak on. 34 And he said, I am Abraham’s servant. 35 And Jehovah has blessed my master greatly, and he is become great; and he has given him sheep and cattle, and silver and gold, and bondmen and bondwomen, and camels and asses. 36 And Sarah, my master’s wife, bore a son to my master after she had grown old; and unto him has he given all that he has. 37 And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanite, in whose land I am dwelling; 38 but thou shalt by all means go to my father’s house and to my family, and take a wife for my son. 39 And I said to my master, Perhaps the woman will not follow me? 40 And he said to me, Jehovah, before whom I have walked, will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way, that thou mayest take a wife for my son of my family, and out of my father’s house. 41 Then shalt thou be quit of my oath, when thou shalt have come to my family. And if they give thee not one, thou shalt be quit of my oath. 42 And I came this day to the well, and said, Jehovah, God*GodHebrew: Elohim of my master Abraham, if now thou wilt prosper my way on which I go, 43 behold, I stand by the well of water, and let it come to pass that the damsel who cometh forth to draw water, and to whom I shall say, Give me, I pray thee, a little water out of thy pitcher to drink, 44 and she shall say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels — that she should be the woman whom Jehovah hath appointed for my master’s son. 45 Before I ended speaking in my heart, behold, Rebecca came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder, and went down to the well, and drew water; and I said to her, Give me, I pray thee, to drink. 46 And she hasted and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also. And I drank; and she gave the camels drink also. 47 And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him. And I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her hands. 48 And I stooped, and bowed down before Jehovah; and I blessed Jehovah, God*GodHebrew: Elohim of my master Abraham, who has led me the right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter for his son. 49 And now, if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me; and I will turn to the right hand or to the left. 50 And Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceeds from Jehovah: we cannot speak to thee bad or good. 51 Behold, Rebecca is before thee: take her, and go away; and let her be wife of thy master’s son, as Jehovah has said. 52 And it came to pass, when Abraham’s servant heard their words, that he bowed down to the earth before Jehovah. 53 And the servant brought forth silver articles, and gold articles, and clothing, and he gave them to Rebecca; and he gave to her brother, and to her mother, precious things.

54 And they ate and drank, he and the men that were with him, and lodged. And they rose up in the morning; and he said, Send me away to my master. 55 And her brother and her mother said, Let the maiden abide with us some days, or say ten; after that she shall go. 56 And he said to them, Do not hinder me, seeing Jehovah has prospered my way: send me away, and I will go to my master. 57 And they said, Let us call the maiden and inquire at her mouth. 58 And they called Rebecca and said to her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go. 59 And they sent away Rebecca their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham’s servant, and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebecca, and said to her, Thou art our sister; mayest thou become thousands of tens of thousands; and may thy seed possess the gate of their enemies! 61 And Rebecca arose, and her maids, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man. And the servant took Rebecca, and went away.

62 And Isaac had just returned from Beer-lahai-roi; for he was dwelling in the south country. 63 And Isaac had gone out to meditate in the fields toward the beginning of evening. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, camels were coming. 64 And Rebecca lifted up her eyes and saw Isaac, and she sprang off the camel. 65 And she had said to the servant, Who is the man that is walking in the fields to meet us? And the servant said, That is my master! Then she took the veil, and covered herself. 66 And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done. 67 And Isaac led her into his mother Sarah’s tent; and he took Rebecca, and she became his wife, and he loved her. And Isaac was comforted after the death of his mother.

Va trebui să duc oare pe fiul tău în țara de unde ai ieșit tu?" 6 Avraam i-a zis: „Să nu care cumva să duci pe fiul meu acolo! 7 Domnul Dumnezeul cerului, care*Cap. 12:1. m-a scos din casa tatălui meu și din patria mea, care mi-a vorbit și mi-a jurat zicând: ‘Seminței*Cap. 12:7;13:15;15:18;17:8.Exod 32:13.Deut. 1:8;34:4.Fapte 7:5. tale voi da țara aceasta’, va*Exod 23:20,23;33:2.Evr. 1:14. trimite pe Îngerul Său înaintea ta, și de acolo vei lua o nevastă fiului meu. 8 Dacă femeia nu va vrea să te urmeze, vei*Ios. 2:17,20. fi dezlegat de jurământul acesta pe care te pun să-l faci. Cu niciun chip să nu duci însă acolo pe fiul meu." 9 Robul și-a pus mâna sub coapsa stăpânului său Avraam și i-a jurat că are să păzească aceste lucruri. 10 Robul a luat zece cămile dintre cămilele stăpânului său și a plecat, având*Vers. 2. cu el toate lucrurile de preț ale stăpânului său. S-a sculat și a plecat în Mesopotamia, în cetatea*Cap. 27:43. lui Nahor. 11 A lăsat cămilele să se odihnească, în genunchi, afară din cetate, lângă o fântână. Era seara, pe vremea când ies femeile*Exod 2:16.1 Sam. 9:11. să scoată apă. 12 Și a zis: „Doamne, Dumnezeul*Vers. 27. Cap. 26:24;28:13;32:9.Exod 3:6,15. stăpânului meu Avraam! Te rog, dă-mi izbândă*Neem. 1:11.Ps. 37:5. astăzi și îndură-Te de stăpânul meu Avraam. 13 Iată, stau*Vers. 43. lângă izvorul acesta de apă, și fetele*Cap. 29:9.Exod 2:16. oamenilor din cetate vin să scoată apă. 14 Fă ca fata căreia îi voi zice: ‘Pleacă-ți vadra, te rog, ca să beau’ și care va răspunde: ‘Bea și am să dau de băut și cămilelor tale’ să fie aceea pe care ai rânduit-o Tu pentru robul Tău Isaac! Și prin aceasta*Jud. 6:17,37.1 Sam. 6:7;14:10;20:7. voi cunoaște că Te-ai îndurat de stăpânul meu." 15 Nu sfârșise el încă de vorbit și a ieșit cu vadra pe umăr Rebeca, fata lui Betuel, fiul Milcăi*Cap. 11:29;22:23., nevasta lui Nahor, fratele lui Avraam. 16 Fata era*Cap. 26:7. foarte frumoasă, era fecioară și niciun bărbat n-avusese legături cu ea. Ea s-a coborât la izvor, și-a umplut vadra și s-a suit iarăși. 17 Robul a alergat înaintea ei și a zis: „Dă-mi, te rog, să beau puțină apă din vadra ta." 18 „Bea, domnul meu", a răspuns*1 Pet. 3:8;4:9. ea. Și s-a grăbit de a plecat vadra pe mână și i-a dat să bea. 19 După ce i-a dat și a băut de s-a săturat, a zis: „Am să scot apă și pentru cămilele tale, până vor bea și se vor sătura." 20 A vărsat în grabă vadra în adăpătoare și a alergat iarăși la fântână ca să scoată apă și a scos pentru toate cămilele lui. 21 Omul o privea cu mirare și fără să zică nimic, ca să vadă dacă Domnul*Vers. 12,56. a făcut să-i izbutească sau nu călătoria. 22 Când s-au săturat cămilele de băut, omul a luat o verigă*Exod 32:2,3.Is. 3:19-21.Ezec. 16:11,12.1 Pet. 3:3. de aur de greutatea unei jumătăți de siclu și două brățări grele de zece sicli de aur. 23 Și a zis: „A cui fată ești? Spune-mi, te rog. Este loc pentru noi în casa tatălui tău, ca să rămânem peste noapte?" 24 Ea a răspuns: „Eu sunt*Cap. 22:23. fata lui Betuel, fiul Milcăi și al lui Nahor." 25 Și i-a zis mai departe: „Avem paie și nutreț din belșug și este și loc de găzduit peste noapte." 26 Atunci, omul*Vers. 52.Exod 4:31. a plecat capul și s-a aruncat cu fața la pământ înaintea Domnului, 27 zicând: „Binecuvântat să fie Domnul Dumnezeul*Exod 18:10.Rut 4:14.1 Sam. 25:32,39.2 Sam. 18:28.Luca 1:68. stăpânului meu Avraam, care n-a părăsit îndurarea*Cap. 32:10.Ps. 98:3. și credincioșia Lui față de stăpânul meu! Domnul m-a îndreptat*Vers. 48. în casa fraților stăpânului meu." 28 Fata a alergat și a istorisit mamei sale acasă cele întâmplate. 29 Rebeca avea un frate, numit Laban*Cap. 29:5.. Și Laban a alergat afară la omul acela, la izvor. 30 Văzuse veriga și brățările în mâinile surorii sale și auzise pe soră-sa Rebeca spunând: „Așa mi-a vorbit omul acela." A venit dar la omul acela, care stătea lângă cămile la izvor, 31 și a zis: „Vino, binecuvântatul*Cap. 26:29.Jud. 17:2.Rut 3:10.Ps. 115:15. Domnului! Pentru ce stai afară? Am pregătit casa și am pregătit un loc pentru cămile." 32 Omul a intrat în casă. Laban a pus să descarce cămilele, a dat*Cap. 43:24.Jud. 19:21. paie și nutreț cămilelor și a adus apă pentru spălat picioarele omului aceluia și ale oamenilor care erau cu el. 33 Apoi, i-a dat să mănânce. Dar el a zis: „Nu mănânc*Iov 23:12.Ioan 4:34.Efes. 6:5-7. până nu voi spune ce am de spus." „Vorbește!" a zis Laban. 34 Atunci, el a zis: „Eu sunt robul lui Avraam. 35 Domnul a umplut*Vers. 1. Cap. 13:2. de binecuvântări pe stăpânul meu, care a ajuns la mare propășire. I-a dat oi și boi, argint și aur, robi și roabe, cămile și măgari. 36 Sara, nevasta stăpânului meu, a născut*Cap. 21:2;21:10;25:5. la bătrânețe un fiu stăpânului meu și lui i-a dat el tot ce are. 37 Stăpânul*Vers. 3. meu m-a pus să jur și a zis: ‘Să nu iei fiului meu o nevastă dintre fetele canaaniților, în țara cărora locuiesc, 38 ci*Vers. 4. să te duci în casa tatălui meu și la rudele mele, ca de acolo să iei nevastă fiului meu.’ 39 Eu*Vers. 5. am zis stăpânului meu: ‘Poate că femeia n-are să vrea să mă urmeze.’ 40 Și el mi-a răspuns*Vers. 7.: ‘Domnul, înaintea*Cap. 17:1. căruia umblu, va trimite pe Îngerul Său cu tine și-ți va da izbândă în călătorie și vei lua fiului meu o nevastă din rudele și din casa tatălui meu. 41 Vei*Vers. 8. fi dezlegat de jurământul pe care mi-l faci dacă te vei duce la rudele mele și, dacă nu ți-o vor da, vei fi dezlegat de jurământul pe care mi-l faci.’ 42 Eu am ajuns azi la izvor și am zis: ‘Doamne*Vers. 12., Dumnezeul stăpânului meu Avraam, dacă binevoiești să-mi dai izbândă în călătoria pe care o fac, 43 iată, eu*Vers. 13. stau la izvorul de apă, și fata care va ieși să scoată apă și căreia îi voi zice: «Dă-mi, te rog, să beau puțină apă din vadra ta» 44 și care îmi va răspunde: «Bea tu însuți și voi da de băut și cămilelor tale», fata aceea să fie nevasta pe care a rânduit-o Domnul pentru fiul stăpânului meu!’ 45 Înainte*Vers. 15. de a sfârși de vorbit*1 Sam. 1:13. în inima mea, iată că a ieșit Rebeca cu vadra pe umăr, s-a coborât la izvor și a scos apă. Eu i-am zis: ‘Dă-mi să beau, te rog.’ 46 Ea s-a grăbit, și-a plecat vadra deasupra umărului și a zis: ‘Bea și voi da de băut și cămilelor tale.’ Am băut și a dat de băut și cămilelor mele. 47 Eu am întrebat-o și am zis: ‘A cui fată ești?’ Ea a răspuns: ‘Sunt fata lui Betuel, fiul lui Nahor și al Milcăi.’ I-am pus*Ezec. 16:11,12. veriga în nas și brățările la mâini. 48 Apoi am plecat*Vers. 26. capul, m-am aruncat cu fața la pământ înaintea Domnului și am binecuvântat pe Domnul Dumnezeul stăpânului meu Avraam că m-a călăuzit pe calea cea dreaptă, ca să iau pe fata fratelui*Cap. 22:23. stăpânului meu pentru fiul lui. 49 Acum, dacă voiți să arătați bunăvoință*Cap. 47:29.Ios. 2:14. și credincioșie față de stăpânul meu, spuneți-mi; dacă nu, spuneți-mi iarăși, ca să mă îndrept la dreapta sau la stânga." 50 Laban și Betuel, drept răspuns, au zis: „De la Domnul*Ps. 118:23.Mat. 21:42.Marcu 12:11. vine lucrul acesta; noi nu-ți mai putem spune*Cap. 31:24. nici rău, nici bine. 51 Iată, Rebeca este*Cap. 20:15. înaintea ta; ia-o și du-te, ca să fie nevasta fiului stăpânului tău, cum a spus Domnul." 52 Când a auzit robul lui Avraam cuvintele lor, s-a aruncat*Vers. 26. cu fața la pământ înaintea Domnului. 53 Și robul a scos scule*Exod 3:22;11:2;12:35. de argint, scule de aur și îmbrăcăminte, pe care le-a dat Rebecăi; a dat, de asemenea, daruri bogate*2 Cron. 21:3.Ezra 1:6. fratelui său și mamei sale. 54 După aceea, au mâncat și au băut, el și oamenii care erau împreună cu el, și s-au culcat. Dimineața când s-au sculat, robul a zis: „Lăsați-mă*Vers. 56,59. să mă întorc la stăpânul meu." 55 Fratele și mama fetei au zis: „Fata să mai rămână câtva timp cu noi, măcar vreo zece zile: pe urmă, poate să plece." 56 El le-a răspuns: „Nu mă opriți, fiindcă Domnul mi-a dat izbândă în călătoria mea; lăsați-mă să plec și să mă duc la stăpânul meu." 57 Atunci, ei au răspuns: „Să chemăm pe fată și s-o întrebăm." 58 Au chemat dar pe Rebeca și i-au zis: „Vrei să te duci cu omul acesta?" „Da, vreau", a răspuns ea. 59 Și au lăsat pe sora lor Rebeca să plece cu doica*Cap. 35:8. ei, cu robul lui Avraam și cu oamenii lui. 60 Au binecuvântat pe Rebeca și i-au zis: „O, sora noastră, să ajungi mama*Cap. 17:16. a mii de zeci de mii și sămânța*Cap. 22:17. ta să stăpânească cetățile vrăjmașilor săi!" 61 Rebeca s-a sculat, împreună cu slujnicele ei, au încălecat pe cămile și au urmat pe omul acela. Robul a luat pe Rebeca și a plecat. 62 Isaac se întorsese de la fântâna*Cap. 16:14;25:11. Lahai-Roi, căci locuia în țara de miazăzi. 63 Într-o seară, când Isaac ieșise să cugete în taină*Ios. 1:8.Ps. 1:2;77:12;119:15;143:5. pe câmp, a ridicat ochii și s-a uitat; și iată că veneau niște cămile. 64 Rebeca a ridicat și ea ochii, a văzut pe Isaac și s-a dat*Ios. 15:18. jos de pe cămilă. 65 Și a zis robului: „Cine este omul acesta care vine înaintea noastră pe câmp?" Robul a răspuns: „Este stăpânul meu!" Atunci, ea și-a luat marama și s-a acoperit. 66 Robul a istorisit lui Isaac toate lucrurile pe care le făcuse. 67 Isaac a dus pe Rebeca în cortul mamei sale Sara; a luat pe Rebeca, ea a fost nevasta lui, și el a iubit-o. Astfel a fost mângâiat*Cap. 38:12. Isaac pentru pierderea mamei sale.
