1 And God*GodHebrew: Elohim said to Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there, and make there an altar unto the ·God*GodHebrew: El that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother. 2 And Jacob said to his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and cleanse yourselves, and change your garments; 3 and we will arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar to the ·God*GodHebrew: El that answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way that I went. 4 And they gave to Jacob all the strange gods that were in their hand, and the rings that were in their ears, and Jacob hid them under the terebinth that is by Shechem. 5 And they journeyed; and the terror of God*GodHebrew: Elohim was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.

6 And Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel, he and all the people that were with him. 7 And he built there an altar, and called the place El-beth-el; because there God*GodHebrew: Elohim had appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother. 8 And Deborah, Rebecca’s nurse, died; and she was buried beneath Bethel, under the oak; and the name of it was called Allon-bachuth. 9 And God*GodHebrew: Elohim appeared to Jacob again after he had come from Padan-Aram, and blessed him. 10 And God*GodHebrew: Elohim said to him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not henceforth be called Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name. And he called his name Israel. 11 And God*GodHebrew: Elohim said to him, I am the Almighty ·God*GodHebrew: El be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee; and kings shall come out of thy loins. 12 And the land that I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land. 13 And God*GodHebrew: Elohim went up from him in the place where he had talked with him. 14 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he had talked with him, a pillar of stone, and poured on it a drink-offering, and poured oil on it. 15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God*GodHebrew: Elohim had talked with him, Beth-el.

16 And they journeyed from Bethel. And there was yet a certain distance to come to Ephrath, when Rachel travailed in childbirth; and it went hard with her in her childbearing. 17 And it came to pass when it went hard with her in her childbearing, that the midwife said to her, Fear not; for this also is a son for thee. 18 And it came to pass as her soul was departing — for she died — that she called his name Benoni; but his father called him Benjamin. 19 And Rachel died, and was buried on the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem. 20 And Jacob erected a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day.

21 And Israel journeyed, and spread his tent on the other side of Migdal-Eder. 22 And it came to pass when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine; and Israel heard of it. And the sons of Jacob were twelve. 23 The sons of Leah: Reuben — Jacob’s firstborn — and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun. 24 The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. 25 And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant: Dan and Naphtali. 26 And the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maidservant: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob that were born to him in Padan-Aram. 27 And Jacob came to Isaac his father to Mamre — to Kirjath-Arba, which is Hebron; where Abraham had sojourned, and Isaac. 28 And the days of Isaac were a hundred and eighty years. 29 And Isaac expired and died, and was gathered to his peoples, old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

Groaza*Exod 15:16;23:27;34:24.Deut. 11:25.Ios. 2:9;5:1.1 Sam. 14:15.2 Cron. 14:14. lui Dumnezeu s-a răspândit peste cetățile care-i înconjurau, așa că locuitorii lor n-au urmărit pe fiii lui Iacov. 6 Iacov și toți cei ce erau cu el au ajuns la Luz*Cap. 28:19,22., adică Betel, în țara Canaan. 7 A zidit*Ecl. 5:4. acolo un altar și a numit locul acela El-Betel (Dumnezeul Betelului), căci acolo*Cap. 28:13. i Se descoperise Dumnezeu când fugea de fratele său. 8 Debora*Cap. 24:59., doica Rebecăi, a murit și a fost îngropată mai jos de Betel, sub stejarul căruia i s-a pus numele: „Stejarul jalei". 9 Dumnezeu*Osea 12:4. S-a arătat iarăși lui Iacov după întoarcerea lui din Padan-Aram și l-a binecuvântat. 10 Dumnezeu i-a zis: „Numele tău*Cap. 17:5. este Iacov, dar nu te vei mai chema Iacov, ci numele tău*Cap. 32:28. va fi Israel." Și i-a pus numele Israel. 11 Dumnezeu i-a zis: „Eu sunt*Cap. 17:1;48:3,4.Exod 6:3. Dumnezeul cel Atotputernic. Crești și înmulțește-te; un neam*Cap. 17:5,6,16;28:3;48:4. și o mulțime de neamuri se vor naște din tine și chiar împărați vor ieși din coapsele tale. 12 Ție îți voi da țara pe*Cap. 12:7;13:15;26:3,4;28:13. care am dat-o lui Avraam și lui Isaac și voi da țara aceasta seminței tale după tine." 13 Dumnezeu S-a înălțat*Cap. 17:22. de la el, în locul unde îi vorbise. 14 Și Iacov a ridicat*Cap. 28:18. un stâlp de aducere aminte în locul unde îi vorbise Dumnezeu, un stâlp de piatră, pe care a adus o jertfă de băutură și a turnat untdelemn. 15 Iacov a numit locul unde îi vorbise Dumnezeu, Betel*Cap. 28:19..

16 Apoi au plecat din Betel și mai era o depărtare bunicică până la Efrata, când Rahelei i-au venit durerile nașterii. A avut o naștere grea 17 și, în timpul durerilor nașterii, moașa i-a zis: „Nu te teme, căci*Cap. 30:24.1 Sam. 4:20. mai ai un fiu!" 18 Și, pe când își dădea ea sufletul, căci trăgea să moară, i-a pus numele Ben-Oni (Fiul durerii mele), dar tatăl său l-a numit Beniamin (Fiul dreptei). 19 Rahela*Cap. 48:7. a murit și a fost îngropată pe drumul care duce la Efrata*Rut 1:2;4:11.Mica 5:2.Mat. 2:6., sau Betleem. 20 Iacov a ridicat un stâlp pe mormântul ei: acesta este stâlpul de pe mormântul Rahelei, care este*1 Sam. 10:2.2 Sam. 18:18. și azi.

21 Israel a plecat mai departe și și-a întins cortul dincolo de Migdal-Eder*Mica 4:8.. 22 Pe când locuia Israel în ținutul acesta, Ruben s-a dus și s-a culcat*Cap. 49:4.1 Cron. 5:1.2 Sam. 16:22;20:3.1 Cor. 5:1. cu Bilha, țiitoarea tatălui său. Și Israel a aflat. Fiii lui Iacov erau în număr de doisprezece. 23 Fiii Leei: Ruben*Cap. 46:8.Exod 1:2., întâiul născut al lui Iacov, Simeon, Levi, Iuda, Isahar și Zabulon. 24 Fiii Rahelei: Iosif și Beniamin. 25 Fiii Bilhei, roaba Rahelei: Dan și Neftali. 26 Fiii Zilpei, roaba Leei: Gad și Așer. Aceștia sunt fiii lui Iacov, care i s-au născut în Padan-Aram.

27 Iacov a ajuns la tatăl său Isaac, la Mamre*Cap. 13:18;23:2,19., la Chiriat-Arba*Ios. 14:15;15:13., care este tot una cu Hebronul, unde locuiseră ca străini Avraam și Isaac. 28 Zilele vieții lui Isaac au fost de o sută optzeci de ani. 29 Isaac și-a dat duhul și a murit și a fost*Cap. 15:15;25:8. adăugat la poporul său, bătrân și sătul de zile. Fiii*Cap. 25:9;49:31. săi, Esau și Iacov, l-au îngropat.
