1 And Jacob dwelt in the land where his father sojourned — in the land of Canaan. 2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, fed the flock with his brethren; and he was doing service with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives. And Joseph brought to his father an evil report of them. 3 And Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was son of his old age; and he made him a vest of many colours. 4 And his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, and they hated him, and could not greet him with friendliness.

5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and told it to his brethren, and they hated him yet the more. 6 And he said to them, Hear, I pray you, this dream, which I have dreamt: 7 Behold, we were binding sheaves in the fields, and lo, my sheaf rose up, and remained standing; and behold, your sheaves came round about and bowed down to my sheaf. 8 And his brethren said to him, Wilt thou indeed be a king over us? wilt thou indeed rule over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams and for his words. 9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamt another dream, and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me. 10 And he told it to his father and to his brethren. And his father rebuked him, and said to him, What is this dream which thou hast dreamt? Shall we indeed come, I and thy mother and thy brethren, to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? 11 And his brethren envied him; but his father kept the saying.

12 And his brethren went to feed their father’s flock at Shechem. 13 And Israel said to Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock at Shechem? Come, that I may send thee to them. And he said to him, Here am I. 14 And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see after the welfare of thy brethren, and after the welfare of the flock; and bring me word again. And he sent him out of the vale of Hebron; and he came towards Shechem. 15 And a man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the country; and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou? 16 And he said, I am seeking my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks. 17 And the man said, They have removed from this; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them at Dothan. 18 And when they saw him from afar, and before he came near to them, they conspired against him to put him to death. 19 And they said one to another, Behold, there comes that dreamer! 20 And now come and let us kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, An evil beast has devoured him; and we will see what becomes of his dreams. 21 And Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, Let us not take his life. 22 And Reuben said to them, Shed no blood: cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness; but lay no hand upon him — in order that he might deliver him out of their hand, to bring him to his father again.

23 And it came to pass when Joseph came to his brethren, that they stripped Joseph of his vest, the vest of many colours, which he had on; 24 and they took him and cast him into the pit; now the pit was empty — there was no water in it. 25 And they sat down to eat bread; and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and behold, a caravan of Ishmaelites came from Gilead; and their camels bore tragacanth, and balsam, and ladanum — going to carry it down to Egypt. 26 And Judah said to his brethren, What profit is it that we kill our brother and secrete his blood? 27 Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites; but let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother, our flesh. And his brethren hearkened to him. 28 And Midianitish men, merchants, passed by; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty silver-pieces; and they brought Joseph to Egypt. 29 And Reuben returned to the pit, and behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his garments, 30 and returned to his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, where shall I go?

31 And they took Joseph’s vest, and slaughtered a buck of the goats, and dipped the vest in the blood; 32 and they sent the vest of many colours and had it carried to their father, and said, This have we found: discern now whether it is thy son’s vest or not. 33 And he discerned it, and said, It is my son’s vest! an evil beast has devoured him: Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces! 34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth on his loins, and mourned for his son many days. 35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted, and said, For I will go down to my son into Sheol mourning. Thus his father wept for him. 36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt, to Potiphar, a chamberlain of Pharaoh, the captain of the life-guard.

Și Iosif spunea tatălui lor vorbele lor cele rele*1 Sam. 2:22-24.. 3 Israel iubea pe Iosif mai mult decât pe toți ceilalți fii ai săi, pentru că îl născuse*Cap. 44:20. la bătrânețe, și i-a făcut o haină pestriță*37:3 Sau: o haină lungă, cu mâneci.. 4 Frații lui au văzut că tatăl lor îl iubea mai mult decât pe ei toți și au început să-l*Cap. 27:41;49:23. urască. Nu puteau să-i spună nicio vorbă prietenească. 5 Iosif a visat un vis și l-a istorisit fraților săi, care l-au urât și mai mult. 6 El le-a zis: „Ia ascultați ce vis am visat! 7 Noi*Cap. 42:6,9;43:26;44:14. eram la legatul snopilor în mijlocul câmpului și iată că snopul meu s-a ridicat și a stat în picioare, iar snopii voștri l-au înconjurat și s-au aruncat cu fața la pământ înaintea lui." 8 Frații lui i-au zis: „Doar n-ai să împărățești tu peste noi? Doar n-ai să ne cârmuiești tu pe noi?" Și l-au urât și mai mult din pricina viselor lui și din pricina cuvintelor lui. 9 Iosif a mai visat un alt vis și l-a istorisit fraților săi. El a zis: „Am mai visat un vis! Soarele*Cap. 46:29., luna și unsprezece stele se aruncau cu fața la pământ înaintea mea." 10 L-a istorisit tatălui său și fraților săi. Tatăl său l-a mustrat și i-a zis: „Ce înseamnă visul acesta pe care l-ai visat? Nu cumva vom veni eu, mama ta și frații*Cap. 27:29. tăi să ne aruncăm cu fața la pământ înaintea ta?" 11 Frații*Fapte 7:9. săi au început să-l pizmuiască, dar tatăl*Dan. 7:28.Luca 2:19,51. său a ținut minte lucrurile acestea. 12 Frații lui Iosif se duseseră la Sihem, ca să pască oile tatălui lor. 13 Israel a zis lui Iosif: „Frații tăi pasc oile la Sihem! Vino, căci vreau să te trimit la ei." „Iată-mă, sunt gata", a răspuns el. 14 Israel i-a zis: „Du-te, rogu-te, și vezi dacă frații tăi sunt sănătoși și dacă oile sunt bine și adu-mi vești." L-a trimis astfel din Valea Hebronului*Cap. 35:27. și Iosif a ajuns la Sihem. 15 Pe când rătăcea pe câmp, l-a întâlnit un om. Omul acela l-a întrebat: „Ce cauți?" 16 „Caut pe frații mei", a răspuns Iosif. „Spune-mi*Cânt. 1:7., te rog, unde pasc ei oile?" 17 Și omul acela a zis: „Au plecat de aici, căci i-am auzit spunând: ‘Haidem la Dotan*2 Împ. 6:13..’" Iosif s-a dus după frații săi și i-a găsit la Dotan. 18 Ei l-au zărit de departe și, până să se apropie de ei, s-au sfătuit*1 Sam. 19:1.Ps. 31:13;37:12,32;94:21.Mat. 27:1.Marcu 14:1.Ioan 11:53.Fapte 23:12. să-l omoare. 19 Ei au zis unul către altul: „Iată că vine făuritorul de vise! 20 Veniți acum, să-l*Prov. 1:11,16;6:17;27:4. omorâm și să-l aruncăm într-una din aceste gropi; vom spune că l-a mâncat o fiară sălbatică și vom vedea ce se va alege de visele lui." 21 Ruben*Cap. 42:22. a auzit lucrul acesta și l-a scos din mâinile lor. El a zis: „Să nu-i luăm viața!" 22 Ruben le-a zis: „Să nu vărsați sânge, ci mai bine aruncați-l în groapa aceasta care este în pustie și nu puneți mâna pe el." Căci avea de gând să-l scape din mâinile lor și să-l aducă înapoi la tatăl său. 23 Când a ajuns Iosif la frații săi, aceștia l-au dezbrăcat de haina lui, de haina cea pestriță pe care o avea pe el. 24 L-au luat și l-au aruncat în groapă. Groapa aceasta era goală: nu era apă în ea. 25 Apoi*Prov. 30:20.Amos 6:6. au șezut să mănânce. Ridicându-și ochii, au văzut o ceată*Vers. 28,36. de ismaeliți venind din Galaad; cămilele lor erau încărcate cu tămâie, cu leac alinător*Ier. 8:22. și smirnă, pe care le duceau în Egipt. 26 Atunci, Iuda a zis fraților săi: „Ce vom câștiga să ucidem pe fratele nostru și să-i ascundem*Cap. 4:10;37:20.Iov 16:18. sângele? 27 Veniți mai bine să-l vindem ismaeliților și să nu punem mâna*1 Sam. 18:17. pe el, căci este fratele*Cap. 42:21. nostru, carne*Cap. 29:14. din carnea noastră." Și frații lui l-au ascultat. 28 La trecerea negustorilor madianiți*Jud. 6:3., au tras și au scos pe Iosif afară din groapă și l-au vândut*Cap. 45:4,5.Ps. 105:17.Fapte 7:9. cu douăzeci*Mat. 27:9. de sicli de argint ismaeliților, care l-au dus în Egipt.

29 Ruben s-a întors la groapă și iată că Iosif nu mai era în groapă. El și-a rupt*Iov 1:20. hainele, 30 s-a întors la frații săi și a zis: „Băiatul nu mai este*Cap. 42:13,36.Ier. 31:15.! Ce mă voi face eu?" 31 Ei au luat atunci haina*Vers. 23. lui Iosif și, junghiind un țap, i-au înmuiat haina în sânge. 32 Au trimis tatălui lor haina cea pestriță, punând să-i spună: „Iată ce am găsit! Vezi dacă este haina fiului tău sau nu." 33 Iacov a cunoscut-o și a zis: „Este haina fiului meu! O fiară*Vers. 20. Cap. 44:28. sălbatică l-a mâncat! Da, Iosif a fost făcut bucăți!" 34 Și și-a rupt*Vers. 29.2 Sam. 3:31. hainele, și-a pus un sac pe coapse și a jelit multă vreme pe fiul său. 35 Toți fiii și toate fiicele lui au venit*2 Sam. 12:17. ca să-l mângâie, dar el nu voia să primească nicio mângâiere, ci zicea: „Plângând*Cap. 42:38;44:29,31. mă voi coborî la fiul meu, în Locuința morților." Și plângea astfel pe fiul său. 36 Madianiții*Cap. 39:1. l-au vândut în Egipt lui Potifar, un dregător al lui Faraon, și anume căpetenia străjerilor.
