1 And Joseph fell upon his father’s face, and wept upon him, and kissed him. 2 And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. And the physicians embalmed Israel. 3 And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those who are embalmed. And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days. 4 And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spoke to the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found favour in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, 5 My father made me swear, saying, Behold, I die; in my grave which I have dug myself in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. And now, let me go up, I pray thee, that I may bury my father; and I will come again. 6 And Pharaoh said, Go up and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear.

7 And Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the bondmen of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8 and all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father’s house; only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen. 9 And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen; and the camp was very great. 10 And they came to the threshing-floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan; and there they lamented with a great and very grievous lamentation; and he made a mourning for his father of seven days. 11 And the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing-floor of Atad, and they said, This is a grievous mourning of the Egyptians. Therefore the name of it was called Abel-Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan. 12 And his sons did to him according as he had commanded them; 13 and his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah which Abraham had bought along with the field, for a possession of a sepulchre, of Ephron the Hittite, opposite to Mamre. 14 And, after he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brethren, and all that had gone up with him to bury his father.

15 And when Joseph’s brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, If now Joseph should be hostile to us, and should indeed requite us all the evil that we did to him! 16 And they sent a messenger to Joseph, saying, Thy father commanded before he died, saying, 17 Thus shall ye speak to Joseph: Oh forgive, I pray thee, the transgression of thy brethren, and their sin! for they did evil to thee. And now, we pray thee, forgive the transgression of the servants of the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18 And his brethren also went and fell down before his face, and said, Behold, we are thy bondmen. 19 And Joseph said to them, Fear not: am I then in the place of God*GodHebrew: Elohim20 Ye indeed meant evil against me: God*GodHebrew: Elohim meant it for good, in order that he might do as it is this day, to save a great people alive. 21 And now, fear not: I will maintain you and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spoke consolingly to them.

22 And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he and his father’s house; and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years. 23 And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation; the sons also of Machir the son of Manasseh were born on Joseph’s knees. 24 And Joseph said to his brethren, I die; and God*GodHebrew: Elohim will certainly visit you, and bring you up out of this land, into the land that he swore unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 25 And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God*GodHebrew: Elohim will certainly visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones hence. 26 And Joseph died, a hundred and ten years old; and they embalmed him; and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

Și egiptenii l-au plâns*Num. 20:29.Deut. 34:8. șaptezeci de zile. 4 După ce au trecut zilele de jale, Iosif a vorbit oamenilor din casa*Est. 4:2. lui Faraon și le-a zis: „Dacă am căpătat trecere înaintea voastră, spuneți, vă rog, lui Faraon ce vă spun eu: 5 ‘Tatăl meu*Cap. 47:29. m-a pus să jur, zicând: «Iată, în curând eu am să mor! Să mă îngropi în mormântul pe care*2 Cron. 11:14.Is. 22:16.Mat. 27:60. mi l-am săpat în țara Canaan.» Aș vrea dar să mă sui acolo, ca să îngrop pe tatăl meu, și după aceea mă voi întoarce.’" 6 Faraon a răspuns: „Suie-te și îngroapă pe tatăl tău, după jurământul pe care te-a pus să-l faci." 7 Iosif s-a suit ca să îngroape pe tatăl său. Împreună cu el s-au suit toți slujitorii lui Faraon, bătrânii casei lui, toți bătrânii țării Egiptului, 8 toată casa lui Iosif, frații săi și casa tatălui său; n-au lăsat în ținutul Gosen decât pruncii, oile și boii. 9 Împreună cu Iosif mai erau care și călăreți, așa că alaiul era foarte mare. 10 Când au ajuns la aria lui Atad, care este dincolo de Iordan, au făcut plângere*2 Sam. 1:17.Fapte 8:2. mare și jalnică, și Iosif a ținut în cinstea tatălui său un bocet*1 Sam. 31:13.Iov 2:13. de șapte zile. 11 Locuitorii țării, canaaniții, au fost martori la bocetul acesta din aria lui Atad și au zis: „Iată un mare bocet printre egipteni!" 15 Când au văzut frații lui Iosif că tatăl lor a murit, au*Iov 15:21,22. zis: „Dacă va prinde Iosif ură pe noi și ne va întoarce tot răul pe care i l-am făcut?" 16 Și au trimis să spună lui Iosif: „Tatăl tău a dat porunca aceasta înainte de moarte: 17 ‘Așa să vorbiți lui Iosif: «O, iartă nelegiuirea fraților tăi și păcatul lor, căci ți-au făcut*Prov. 28:13. Cap. 49:25. rău!»’ Iartă acum păcatul robilor Dumnezeului tatălui tău!" Iosif a plâns când a auzit cuvintele acestea. 18 Frații lui au venit și s-au aruncat*Cap. 37:7,10. ei înșiși cu fața la pământ înaintea lui și i-au zis: „Suntem robii tăi." 19 Iosif le-a zis: „Fiți fără*Cap. 45:5. teamă, căci sunt*Deut. 32:35.2 Împ. 5:7.Iov 34:29.Rom. 12:19.Evr. 10:30. eu oare în locul lui Dumnezeu? 20 Voi*Ps. 56:5.Is. 10:7., negreșit, v-ați gândit să-mi faceți rău, dar Dumnezeu*Cap. 45:5,7.Fapte 3:13-15. a schimbat răul în bine, ca să împlinească ceea ce se vede azi, și anume să scape viața unui popor în mare număr. 21 Fiți dar fără teamă, căci eu vă voi hrăni*Cap. 47:12.Mat. 5:44. pe voi și pe copiii voștri." Și i-a mângâiat și le-a îmbărbătat inimile.

22 Iosif a locuit în Egipt, el și casa tatălui său, și a trăit o sută zece ani. 23 Iosif a văzut pe fiii lui Efraim până la al treilea*Iov 42:16. neam; și fiii*Num. 32:39. lui Machir, fiul lui Manase, s-au născut*Cap. 30:3. pe genunchii lui. 24 Iosif a zis fraților săi: „Eu am să mor! Dar Dumnezeu*Cap. 15:14;46:4;48:21.Exod 3:16,17.Evr. 11:22. vă va cerceta și vă va face să vă suiți din țara aceasta în țara pe care a jurat*Cap. 15:18;26:3;35:12;46:4. că o va da lui Avraam, lui Isaac și lui Iacov." 25 Iosif*Exod 13:19.Ios. 24:32.Fapte 7:16. a pus pe fiii lui Israel să jure, zicând: „Când vă va cerceta Dumnezeu, să luați și oasele mele de aici." 26 Iosif a murit în vârstă de o sută zece ani. L-au îmbălsămat*Vers. 2. și l-au pus într-un sicriu în Egipt.
