1 And the high priest said, Are these things then so? 2 And he said, Brethren and fathers, hearken. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran, 3 and said to him, Go out of thy land and out of thy kindred, and come into the land which I will shew thee. 4 Then going out of the land of the Chaldeans he dwelt in Charran, and thence, after his father died, he removed him into this land in which ye now dwell. 5 And he did not give him an inheritance in it, not even what his foot could stand on; and promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when he had no child. 6 And God spoke thus: His seed shall be a sojourner in a strange land, and they shall enslave them and evil entreat them four hundred years; 7 and the nation to which they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God; and after these things they shall come forth and serve me in this place. 8 And he gave to him the covenant of circumcision; and thus he begat Isaac and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac Jacob, and Jacob the twelve patriarchs. 9 And the patriarchs, envying Joseph, sold him away into Egypt. And God was with him, 10 and delivered him out of all his tribulations, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he appointed him chief over Egypt and all his house. 11 But a famine came upon all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great distress, and our fathers found no food. 12 But Jacob, having heard of there being corn in Egypt, sent out our fathers first; 13 and the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren, and the family of Joseph became known to Pharaoh. 14 And Joseph sent and called down to him his father Jacob and all his kindred, seventy-five souls. 15 And Jacob went down into Egypt and died, he and our fathers, 16 and were carried over to Sychem and placed in the sepulchre which Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.

17 But as the time of promise drew near which God had promised to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt, 18 until another king over Egypt arose who did not know Joseph. 19 He dealt subtilly with our race, and evil entreated the fathers, casting out their infants that they might not live. 20 In which time Moses was born, and was exceedingly lovely, who was nourished three months in the house of his father. 21 And when he was cast out, the daughter of Pharaoh took him up, and brought him up for herself to be for a son. 22 And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds. 23 And when a period of forty years was fulfilled to him, it came into his heart to look upon his brethren, the sons of Israel; 24 and seeing a certain one wronged, he defended him, and avenged him that was being oppressed, smiting the Egyptian. 25 For he thought that his brethren would understand that God by his hand was giving them deliverance. But they understood not. 26 And on the morrow he shewed himself to them as they were contending, and compelled them to peace, saying, Ye are brethren, why do ye wrong one another? 27 But he that was wronging his neighbour thrust him away, saying, Who established thee ruler and judge over us? 28 Dost thou wish to kill me as thou killedst the Egyptian yesterday? 29 And Moses fled at this saying, and became a sojourner in the land of Madiam, where he begat two sons.

30 And when forty years were fulfilled, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sinai, in a flame of fire of a bush. 31 And Moses seeing it wondered at the vision; and as he went up to consider it, there was a voice of the Lord, 32 I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob. And Moses trembled, and durst not consider it. 33 And the Lord said to him, Loose the sandal of thy feet, for the place on which thou standest is holy ground. 34 I have surely seen the ill treatment of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groan, and have come down to take them out of it; and now, come, I will send thee to Egypt. 35 This Moses, whom they refused, saying, Who made thee ruler and judge? him did God send to be a ruler and deliverer with the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 He led them out, having wrought wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years. 37 This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, A prophet shall God raise up to you out of your brethren like me him shall ye hear. 38 This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him in the mount Sinai, and with our fathers; who received living oracles to give to us; 39 to whom our fathers would not be subject, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back to Egypt, 40 saying to Aaron, Make us gods who shall go before us; for this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what has happened to him. 41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

42 But God turned and delivered them up to serve the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, Have ye offered me victims and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel? 43 Yea, ye took up the tent of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, the forms which ye made to do homage to them; and I will transport you beyond Babylon. 44 Our fathers had the tent of the testimony in the wilderness, as he that spoke to Moses commanded to make it according to the model which he had seen; 45 which also our fathers, receiving from their predecessors, brought in with Joshua when they entered into possession of the lands of the nations, whom God drove out from the face of our fathers, until the days of David; 46 who found favour before God, and asked to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob; 47 but Solomon built him a house. 48 But the Most High dwells not in places made with hands; as says the prophet, 49 The heaven is my throne and the earth the footstool of my feet: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord, or where is the place of my rest? 50 has not my hand made all these things?

51 O stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers, ye also. 52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain those who announced beforehand concerning the coming of the Just One, of whom ye have now become deliverers up and murderers! 53 who have received the law as ordained by the ministry of angels, and have not kept it.

54 And hearing these things they were cut to the heart, and gnashed their teeth against him. 55 But being full of the Holy Spirit, having fixed his eyes on heaven, he saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, 56 and said, Lo, I behold the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God. 57 And they cried out with a loud voice, and held their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord; 58 and having cast him out of the city, they stoned him. And the witnesses laid aside their clothes at the feet of a young man called Saul. 59 And they stoned Stephen, praying, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. 60 And kneeling down, he cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And having said this, he fell asleep.

De acolo, după moartea tatălui său, Dumnezeu l-a strămutat în țara aceasta, în care locuiți voi acum. 5 Din țara aceea nu i-a dat nimic în stăpânire, nici măcar o palmă de loc, ci i-a făgăduit*Gen. 12:7;13:15;15:3,8;17:8;26:3. că i-o va da în stăpânire lui și seminței lui după el, măcar că n-avea niciun copil. 6 Dumnezeu i-a spus că sămânța*Gen. 15:13,16. lui va locui într-o țară străină, va fi robită și va fi chinuită patru*Exod 12:40.Gal. 3:17. sute de ani. 7 ‘Dar neamul căruia îi vor fi robi, îl voi judeca Eu’, a zis Dumnezeu. ‘După aceea, vor ieși și-Mi vor*Exod 3:12. sluji în locul acesta.’ 8 Apoi i-a dat*Gen. 17:9-11. legământul tăierii împrejur, și astfel*Gen. 21:2-4. Avraam, când a născut pe Isaac, l-a tăiat împrejur în ziua a opta, Isaac*Gen. 25:26. a născut și a tăiat împrejur pe Iacov, și Iacov*Gen. 29:31;30:5;35:18,23., pe cei doisprezece patriarhi. 9 Iar*Gen. 37:4,11,28.Ps. 105:17. patriarhii, care pizmuiau pe Iosif, l-au vândut, ca să fie dus în Egipt. Dumnezeu a fost cu el 10 și l-a izbăvit din toate necazurile lui; i-a dat înțelepciune și trecere*Gen. 41:37;42:6. înaintea lui Faraon, împăratul Egiptului, care l-a pus dregător peste Egipt și peste toată casa lui. 11 A venit*Gen. 41:54. o foamete în tot Egiptul și Canaanul. Norodul a*Exod 1:7-9.Ps. 105:24,25. crescut și s-a înmulțit în Egipt, 18 până când s-a ridicat un alt împărat, care nu cunoștea pe Iosif. 19 Împăratul acesta a uneltit împotriva neamului nostru și a chinuit pe părinții noștri, până acolo ca să-și*Exod 1:22. lepede pruncii, ca să nu trăiască.

20 Pe*Exod 2:2. vremea aceasta s-a născut Moise, care era*Evr. 11:23. frumos înaintea lui Dumnezeu. El a fost hrănit trei luni în casa tatălui său. 21 Și când a fost*Exod 2:3-10. lepădat, l-a luat fiica lui Faraon și l-a crescut ca pe copilul ei. 22 Moise a învățat toată înțelepciunea egiptenilor și era puternic*Luca 24:19. în cuvinte și în fapte. 23 El*Exod 2:11,12. avea patruzeci de ani când i-a venit în inimă dorința să cerceteze pe frații săi, pe fiii lui Israel. 24 A văzut pe unul din ei suferind nedreptate, i-a luat apărarea, a răzbunat pe cel asuprit și a omorât pe egiptean. 25 Credea că frații lui vor pricepe că Dumnezeu, prin mâna lui, le va da izbăvirea, dar n-au priceput. 26 A*Exod 2:13. doua zi, când se băteau ei, Moise a venit în mijlocul lor și i-a îndemnat la pace. ‘Oamenilor’, a zis el, ‘voi sunteți frați; de ce vă nedreptățiți unul pe altul?’ 27 Dar cel ce nedreptățea pe aproapele său l-a îmbrâncit și i-a zis: ‘Cine*Luca 12:14. Cap. 4:7. te-a pus pe tine stăpânitor și judecător peste noi? 28 Vrei să mă omori și pe mine cum ai omorât ieri pe egiptean?’ 29 La*Exod 2:15,22;4:20;18:3,4. auzul acestor vorbe, Moise a fugit și s-a dus de a locuit ca străin în pământul Madian, unde a născut doi fii. 30 Peste*Exod 3:2. patruzeci de ani, i s-a arătat un înger în pustia muntelui Sinai, în para focului unui rug. 31 Moise, când l-a văzut, s-a mirat de arătarea aceasta și, pe când se apropia să vadă ce este, a auzit glasul Domnului, 32 care i-a zis: ‘Eu*Mat. 22:32.Evr. 11:16. sunt Dumnezeul părinților tăi, Dumnezeul lui Avraam, Dumnezeul lui Isaac și Dumnezeul lui Iacov.’ Și Moise, tremurând, n-a îndrăznit să se uite. 33 Domnul*Exod 3:5.Ios. 5:15. i-a zis: ‘Scoate-ți încălțămintea din picioare, căci locul pe care stai este un pământ sfânt. 34 Am*Exod 3:7. văzut suferința poporului Meu, care este în Egipt, le-am auzit gemetele și M-am coborât să-i izbăvesc. Acum, du-te, te voi trimite în Egipt.’ 35 Pe acest Moise de care se lepădaseră ei, când au zis: ‘Cine te-a pus pe tine stăpânitor și judecător?’ Dumnezeu l-a trimis ca stăpânitor și izbăvitor, cu ajutorul*Exod 14:19.Num. 20:16. îngerului, care i se arătase în rug. 36 El*Exod 12:41;33:1. i-a scos din Egipt și a făcut*Exod 7:11,14.Ps. 105:27. minuni și semne în Egipt, la*Exod 14:21,27-29. De aceea vă voi strămuta dincolo de Babilon.’ 44 Părinții noștri aveau în pustie cortul întâlnirii, așa cum îl rânduise Cel ce a spus lui Moise să-l*Exod 25:40;26:30.Evr. 8:5. facă după chipul pe care-l văzuse. 45 Și*Ios. 3:14. părinții noștri l-au adus, la rândul lor, sub povățuirea lui Iosua, când au intrat în țara stăpânită de neamurile pe*Neem. 9:24.Ps. 44:2;78:55. Cap. 13:19. care Dumnezeu le-a izgonit dinaintea părinților noștri, și a rămas acolo până în zilele lui David. 46 David*1 Sam. 16:1.2 Sam. 7:1.Ps. 89:19. Cap. 13:22. a căpătat milă înaintea lui Dumnezeu și a*1 Împ. 8:17.1 Cron. 22:7.Ps. 132:4,5. cerut să ridice o locuință pentru Dumnezeul lui Iacov. 47 Și*1 Împ. 6:1;8:20.1 Cron. 17:12.2 Cron. 3:1. Solomon a fost acela care I-a zidit o casă. 48 Dar*1 Împ. 8:27.2 Cron. 2:6;6:18. Cap. 17:24. Cel Preaînalt nu locuiește în locașuri făcute de mâini omenești, cum zice prorocul: 49 ‘«Cerul*Is. 66:1,2.Mat. 5:34,35;23:22. este scaunul Meu de domnie, și pământul este așternutul picioarelor Mele. Ce fel de casă Îmi veți zidi voi Mie», zice Domnul, «sau care va fi locul Meu de odihnă? 50 N-a făcut mâna Mea toate aceste lucruri?»’…

51 Oameni tari*Exod 32:9;33:3.Is. 48:4. la cerbice, netăiați împrejur*Lev. 26:41.Deut. 10:16.Ier. 4:4;6:10;9:26.Ezec. 44:9. cu inima și cu urechile! Voi totdeauna vă împotriviți Duhului Sfânt. Cum au făcut părinții voștri, așa faceți și voi. 52 Pe*2 Cron. 36:16.Mat. 21:35;23:34,37.1 Tes. 2:15. care din proroci nu i-au prigonit părinții voștri? Au omorât pe cei ce vesteau mai dinainte venirea Celui*Cap. 3:14. Neprihănit, pe care L-ați vândut acum și L-ați omorât, 53 voi, care*Exod 20:1.Gal. 3:19.Evr. 2:2. ați primit Legea dată prin îngeri, și n-ați păzit-o!…" 54 Când*Cap. 5:33. au auzit ei aceste vorbe, îi tăia pe inimă și scrâșneau din dinți împotriva lui. 55 Dar Ștefan, plin*Cap. 6:5. de Duhul Sfânt, și-a pironit ochii spre cer, a văzut slava lui Dumnezeu și pe Isus stând în picioare la dreapta lui Dumnezeu 56 și a zis: „Iată, văd*Ezec. 1:1.Mat. 3:16. Cap. 10:11. cerurile deschise și pe Fiul*Dan. 7:13. omului stând în picioare la dreapta lui Dumnezeu." 57 Ei au început atunci să răcnească, și-au astupat urechile și s-au năpustit toți într-un gând asupra lui. 58 L-au târât*1 Împ. 21:13.Luca 4:29.Evr. 13:12. afară din cetate și l-au*Lev. 24:16. ucis cu pietre. Martorii*Deut. 13:9,10;17:7. Cap. 8:1;22:20. și-au pus hainele la picioarele unui tânăr, numit Saul. 59 Și aruncau cu pietre în Ștefan, care*Cap. 9:14. se ruga și zicea: „Doamne Isuse, primește*Ps. 31:5.Luca 23:46. duhul meu!" 60 Apoi, a îngenuncheat*Cap. 9:40;20:36;21:5. și a strigat cu glas tare: „Doamne*Mat. 5:44.Luca 6:28;23:34., nu le ține în seamă păcatul acesta!" Și după aceste vorbe, a adormit.
