1 But in those days, the disciples multiplying in number, there arose a murmuring of the Hellenists against the Hebrews because their widows were overlooked in the daily ministration. 2 And the twelve, having called the multitude of the disciples to them, said, It is not right that we, leaving the word of God, should serve tables. 3 Look out therefore, brethren, from among yourselves seven men, well reported of, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we will establish over this business: 4 but we will give ourselves up to prayer and the ministry of the word. 5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte of Antioch, 6 whom they set before the apostles; and, having prayed, they laid their hands on them. 7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem was very greatly multiplied, and a great crowd of the priests obeyed the faith.

8 And Stephen, full of grace and power, wrought wonders and great signs among the people. 9 And there arose up certain of those of the synagogue called of freedmen, and of Cyrenians, and of Alexandrians, and of those of Cilicia and Asia, disputing with Stephen. 10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke. 11 Then they suborned men, saying, We have heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God. 12 And they roused the people, and the elders, and the scribes. And coming upon him they seized him and brought him to the council. 13 And they set false witnesses, saying, This man does not cease speaking words against the holy place and the law; 14 for we have heard him saying, This Jesus the Nazaraean shall destroy this place, and change the customs which Moses taught us. 15 And all who sat in the council, looking fixedly on him, saw his face as the face of an angel.

Au ales pe Ștefan, bărbat*Cap. 11:24. plin de credință și de Duhul Sfânt, pe Filip*Cap. 8:5,26;21:8., pe Prohor, pe Nicanor, pe Timon, pe Parmena și pe Nicolae*Apoc. 2:6,15., un prozelit din Antiohia. 6 I-au adus înaintea apostolilor, care*Cap. 1:24., după ce s-au rugat, și-au*Cap. 8:17;9:17;13:3.1 Tim. 4:14;5:22.2 Tim. 1:6. pus mâinile peste ei.

7 Cuvântul*Cap. 12:24;19:20.Col. 1:6. lui Dumnezeu se răspândea tot mai mult, numărul ucenicilor se înmulțea mult în Ierusalim și o mare mulțime de*Ioan 12:42. preoți veneau la credință. 8 Ștefan era plin de har și de putere și făcea minuni și semne mari în norod. 9 Unii din sinagoga numită a Izbăviților, a Cirinenilor și a Alexandrinilor, împreună cu niște iudei din Cilicia și din Asia, au început o ceartă de vorbe cu Ștefan, 10 dar*Luca 21:15. Cap. 5:39.Exod 4:12.Is. 54:17. nu puteau să stea împotriva înțelepciunii și Duhului cu care vorbea el. 11 Atunci*1 Împ. 21:10,13.Mat. 26:59,60. au pus la cale pe niște oameni să zică: „Noi l-am auzit rostind cuvinte de hulă împotriva lui Moise și împotriva lui Dumnezeu." 12 Au întărâtat norodul, pe bătrâni și pe cărturari, au năvălit asupra lui, au pus mâna pe el și l-au dus în sobor. 13 Au scos niște martori mincinoși, care au zis: „Omul acesta nu încetează să spună cuvinte de hulă împotriva acestui locaș sfânt și împotriva Legii. 14 În adevăr*Cap. 25:8., l-am auzit zicând că acest Isus din Nazaret va dărâma*Dan. 9:26. locașul acesta și va schimba obiceiurile pe care ni le-a dat Moise." 15 Toți cei ce ședeau în sobor s-au uitat țintă la Ștefan, și fața lui li s-a arătat ca o față de înger.
