1 And Paul, fixing his eyes on the council, said, Brethren, I have walked in all good conscience with God unto this day. 2 But the high priest Ananias ordered those standing by him to smite his mouth. 3 Then Paul said to him, God will smite thee, whited wall. And thou, dost thou sit judging me according to the law, and breaking the law commandest me to be smitten? 4 And those that stood by said, Dost thou rail against the high priest of God? 5 And Paul said, I was not conscious, brethren, that he was high priest; for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evilly of the ruler of thy people.

6 But Paul, knowing that the one part of them were of the Sadducees and the other of the Pharisees, cried out in the council, Brethren, I am a Pharisee, son of Pharisees: I am judged concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead. 7 And when he had spoken this, there was a tumult of the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the multitude was divided. 8 For Sadducees say there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but Pharisees confess both of them. 9 And there was a great clamour, and the scribes of the Pharisees' part rising up contended, saying, We find nothing evil in this man; and if a spirit has spoken to him, or an angel... 10 And a great tumult having arisen, the chiliarch, fearing lest Paul should have been torn in pieces by them, commanded the troop to come down and take him by force from the midst of them, and to bring him into the fortress. 11 But the following night the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good courage; for as thou hast testified the things concerning me at Jerusalem, so thou must bear witness at Rome also.

12 And when it was day, the Jews, having banded together, put themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they should kill Paul. 13 And they were more than forty who had joined together in this oath; 14 and they went to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have cursed ourselves with a curse to taste nothing until we kill Paul. 15 Now therefore do ye with the council make a representation to the chiliarch so that he may bring him down to you, as about to determine more precisely what concerns him, and we, before he draws near, are ready to kill him. 16 But Paul’s sister’s son, having heard of the lying in wait, came and entered into the fortress and reported it to Paul. 17 And Paul, having called one of the centurions, said, Take this youth to the chiliarch, for he has something to report to him. 18 He therefore, having taken him with him, led him to the chiliarch, and says, The prisoner Paul called me to him and asked me to lead this youth to thee, who has something to say to thee. 19 And the chiliarch having taken him by the hand, and having gone apart in private, inquired, What is it that thou hast to report to me? 20 And he said, The Jews have agreed together to make a request to thee, that thou mayest bring Paul down to-morrow into the council, as about to inquire something more precise concerning him. 21 Do not thou then be persuaded by them, for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, who have put themselves under a curse neither to eat nor drink till they kill him; and now they are ready waiting the promise from thee. 22 The chiliarch then dismissed the youth, commanding him, Utter to no one that thou hast represented these things to me. 23 And having called to him certain two of the centurions, he said, Prepare two hundred soldiers that they may go as far as Caesarea, and seventy horsemen, and two hundred light-armed footmen, for the third hour of the night. 24 And he ordered them to provide beasts, that they might set Paul on them and carry him safe through to Felix the governor, 25 having written a letter, couched in this form: 26 Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix, greeting. 27 This man, having been taken by the Jews, and being about to be killed by them, I came up with the military and took out of their hands, having learned that he was a Roman. 28 And desiring to know the charge on which they accused him, I brought him down to their council; 29 whom I found to be accused of questions of their law, but to have no charge laid against him making him worthy of death or of bonds. 30 But having received information of a plot about to be put in execution against the man by the Jews, I have immediately sent him to thee, commanding also his accusers to say before thee the things that are against him. Farewell.31 The soldiers therefore, according to what was ordered them, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris, 32 and on the morrow, having left the horsemen to go with him, returned to the fortress. 33 And these, having entered into Caesarea, and given up the letter to the governor, presented Paul also to him. 34 And having read it, and asked of what eparchy he was, and learned that he was of Cilicia, 35 he said, I will hear thee fully when thine accusers also are arrived. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod’s praetorium.

1 Pavel s-a uitat țintă la sobor și a zis: „Fraților, eu*Cap. 24:16.1 Cor. 4:4.2 Cor. 1:12;4:2.2 Tim. 1:3.Evr. 13:18. am viețuit cu toată curăția cugetului meu înaintea lui Dumnezeu până în ziua aceasta…" 2 Marele preot Anania a poruncit celor ce stăteau lângă el să-l*1 Împ. 22:24.Ier. 20:2.Ioan 18:22. lovească peste gură. 3 Atunci, Pavel i-a zis: „Te va bate Dumnezeu, perete văruit! Tu șezi să mă judeci după Lege și poruncești*Lev. 19:35.Deut. 25:1,2.Ioan 7:51. să mă lovească, împotriva Legii!" 4 Cei ce stăteau lângă el i-au zis: „Îți bați joc de marele preot al lui Dumnezeu?" 5 Și Pavel a zis: „N-am*Cap. 24:17. știut, fraților, că este marele preot, căci este scris: ‘Pe*Exod 22:28.Ecl. 10:20.2 Pet. 2:10.Iuda 8. mai-marele norodului tău să nu-l grăiești de rău.’" 6 Pavel, ca unul care știa că o parte din adunare erau saduchei, iar alta farisei, a strigat în plin sobor: „Fraților, eu*Cap. 26:5.Filip. 3:5. sunt fariseu, fiu de fariseu; din pricina nădejdii*Cap. 24:15,21;26:6;28:20. în învierea morților sunt dat în judecată." 7 Când a zis vorbele acestea, s-a stârnit o neînțelegere între farisei și saduchei, și adunarea s-a dezbinat. 8 Căci*Mat. 22:23.Marcu 12:18.Luca 20:27. saducheii zic că nu este înviere, nici înger, nici duh, pe când fariseii le mărturisesc pe amândouă. 9 S-a făcut o mare zarvă, și câțiva cărturari din partida fariseilor s-au sculat în picioare, au început o ceartă aprinsă și au zis: „Noi nu găsim nicio*Cap. 25:25;26:31. vină în omul acesta; dar dacă*Cap. 22:7,17,18. i-a vorbit un duh sau un înger*Cap. 5:39.?"… 10 Fiindcă gâlceava creștea, căpitanul se temea ca Pavel să nu fie rupt în bucăți de ei. De aceea a poruncit ostașilor să se coboare, să-l smulgă din mijlocul lor și să-l ducă în cetățuie. 11 În*Cap. 18:9;27:23,24. noaptea următoare, Domnul S-a arătat lui Pavel și i-a zis: „Îndrăznește, Pavele, căci, după cum ai mărturisit despre Mine în Ierusalim, tot așa trebuie să mărturisești și în Roma."

12 La ziuă, iudeii au*Vers. 21,30. Cap. 25:3. uneltit și s-au legat cu blestem că nu vor mânca, nici nu vor bea până nu vor omorî pe Pavel. 13 Cei ce făcuseră legământul acesta erau mai mulți de patruzeci. 14 Ei s-au dus la preoții cei mai de seamă și la bătrâni și le-au zis: „Noi ne-am legat cu mare blestem să nu gustăm nimic până nu vom omorî pe Pavel. 15 Acum dar, voi, împreună cu soborul, dați de știre căpitanului și rugați-l să-l aducă mâine jos, înaintea voastră, ca și cum ați vrea să-i cercetați pricina mai cu de-amănuntul, și până să ajungă el, noi suntem gata să-l omorâm." 16 Fiul surorii lui Pavel a auzit de această cursă, s-a dus în cetățuie și a spus lui Pavel. 17 Pavel a chemat pe unul din sutași și a zis: „Du pe tinerelul acesta la căpitan, căci are să-i spună ceva." 18 Sutașul a luat pe tânăr cu el, l-a dus la căpitan și a zis: „Pavel cel întemnițat m-a chemat și m-a rugat să aduc la tine pe acest tinerel, care are să-ți spună ceva." 19 Căpitanul l-a apucat de mână, l-a luat deoparte și l-a întrebat: „Ce ai să-mi spui?" 20 El a răspuns: „Iudeii*Vers. 12. s-au sfătuit să te roage să aduci mâine pe Pavel înaintea soborului, ca și cum ai avea să-l cercetezi mai cu de-amănuntul. 21 Tu să nu-i asculți, pentru că mai mulți de patruzeci dintre ei îl pândesc și s-au legat cu blestem să nu mănânce și să nu bea nimic până nu-l vor omorî; acum stau gata și n-așteaptă decât făgăduiala ta." 22 Căpitanul a lăsat pe tinerel să plece și i-a poruncit să nu spună nimănui că i-a descoperit aceste lucruri. 23 În urmă, a chemat pe doi sutași și le-a zis: „La ceasul al treilea din noapte, să aveți gata două sute de ostași, șaptezeci de călăreți și două sute de sulițari, ca să meargă până la Cezareea." 24 Le-a poruncit să aducă și dobitoace pentru Pavel, ca să-l pună călare și să-l ducă sănătos și teafăr la dregătorul Felix. 25 Lui Felix, i-a scris o scrisoare cu următorul cuprins: 26 „Claudius Lisias către preaalesul dregător Felix: plecăciune! 27 Acest*Cap. 21:33;24:7. om, pe care l-au prins iudeii, era să fie omorât de ei, și eu m-am dus repede cu ostași și l-am scos din mâna lor, căci am aflat că este roman. 28 Am*Cap. 22:30. vrut să aflu pricina pentru care-l pârau și l-am adus înaintea soborului lor. 29 Am găsit că era pârât pentru*Cap. 18:15;25:19. lucruri privitoare la Legea lor, dar*Cap. 26:31. că nu săvârșise nicio nelegiuire care să fie vrednică de moarte sau de lanțuri. 30 Mi s-a dat*Vers. 20. însă de știre că iudeii îl pândesc ca să-l omoare; l-am trimis îndată la tine și am făcut cunoscut*Cap. 24:8;25:6. și celor ce-l învinuiesc să-ți spună ție ce au împotriva lui. Fii sănătos." 31 Ostașii, după porunca pe care o primiseră, au luat pe Pavel și l-au dus noaptea până la Antipatrida. 32 A doua zi, au lăsat pe călăreți să-și urmeze drumul înainte cu el, iar ei s-au întors în cetățuie. 33 Ajunși în Cezareea, călăreții au dat scrisoarea în mâna dregătorului și au adus pe Pavel înaintea lui. 34 Dregătorul, după ce a citit scrisoarea, a întrebat din ce ținut este Pavel. Când a aflat că este din Cilicia*Cap. 21:39., 35 „te*Cap. 24:1,10;25:16. voi asculta", a zis el, „când vor veni pârâșii tăi". Și a poruncit să fie păzit în palatul*Mat. 27:27. lui Irod.
