1 When Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim hath cut off the nations whose land Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim giveth thee, and thou hast dispossessed them, and dwellest in their cities and in their houses, 2 thou shalt separate three cities for thyself in the midst of thy land, which Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim giveth thee to possess. 3 Thou shalt prepare thee the way, and divide the territory of thy land, which Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, so that every slayer may flee thither. 4 And this is the case of the slayer who shall flee thither that he may live: he that smiteth his neighbour unwittingly, whom he hated not previously; 5 as when he goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the iron slippeth from the handle, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; such an one shall flee unto one of these cities, and live; 6 lest the avenger of blood pursue the manslayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and smite him mortally; whereas he was not worthy of death, since he hated him not previously. 7 Therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thyself. 8 And if Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim enlarge thy border, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers 9 (if thou keep all this commandment to do it, which I command thee this day, to love Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim and to walk in his ways continually), then shalt thou add three cities more for thyself to these three, 10 that innocent blood be not shed in the midst of thy land which Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim giveth thee for an inheritance, and blood come not upon thee. 11 But if a man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and he flee into one of these cities, 12 then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die. 13 Thine eye shall not spare him; and thou shalt put away innocent blood from Israel, that it may be well with thee.

14 Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour’s landmark, which they of old time have fixed in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land which Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim giveth thee to possess. 15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, and for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall a matter be established. 16 If an unrighteous witness rise up against any man to testify against him of an offence; 17 then both the men between whom the controversy is shall stand before Jehovah, before the priests and the judges that shall be in those days; 18 and the judges shall make thorough inquiry; and if the witness be a false witness, and he have testified falsely against his brother, 19 then shall ye do unto him as he had thought to have done unto his brother; and thou shalt put evil away from thy midst. 20 And those that remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil in thy midst. 21 And thine eye shall not spare: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

Cap. 4:42. aceasta să fie pentru ucigașul care va fugi acolo, ca să-și scape viața, când va omorî fără voie pe aproapele său, fără să-i fi fost vrăjmaș mai înainte. 5 Așa, de pildă, un om se va duce să taie lemne în pădure cu un alt om; ridică securea cu mâna, ca să taie copacul, fierul scapă din coadă, lovește pe tovarășul său și-l omoară. Atunci, el să fugă într-una din cetățile acestea ca să-și scape viața, 6 pentru ca*Num. 35:12. nu cumva răzbunătorul sângelui, aprins de mânie și urmărind pe ucigaș, să-l ajungă, fiind prea lung drumul, și să lovească de moarte pe cel ce nu era vinovat de moarte, fiindcă mai înainte nu fusese vrăjmaș aproapelui său. 7 De aceea îți dau porunca aceasta: Să desparți trei cetăți. 8 Când Domnul Dumnezeul tău îți va lărgi*Gen. 15:18. Cap. 12:20. hotarele, cum a jurat părinților tăi, și-ți va da toată țara pe care a făgăduit părinților tăi că ți-o va da – 9 numai să păzești și să împlinești toate aceste porunci pe care ți le dau astăzi, ca să iubești pe Domnul Dumnezeul tău și să umbli totdeauna pe căile Lui –, atunci*Ios. 20:7,8. să mai adaugi trei cetăți la cele trei, 10 pentru ca să nu fie vărsat sângele celui nevinovat în mijlocul țării pe care ți-o dă de moștenire Domnul Dumnezeul tău, și astfel să fii vinovat de omor. 11 Dar dacă*Exod 21:12.Num. 35:16,24. Cap. 27:24.Prov. 28:17. un om fuge într-una din aceste cetăți după ce a întins lațuri aproapelui său din vrăjmășie împotriva lui, după ce s-a aruncat asupra lui și l-a lovit așa încât i-a pricinuit moartea, 12 bătrânii din cetatea lui să trimită să-l prindă și să-l dea în mâinile răzbunătorului sângelui, ca să moară. 13 Să n-ai milă de*Cap. 13:8;25:12. el și să*Num. 35:33,34. Cap. 21:9.1 Împ. 2:31. ștergi din Israel sângele celui nevinovat, ca să fii fericit.

14 Să*Cap. 27:17.Iov 24:2.Prov. 22:28.Osea 5:10. nu muți hotarele aproapelui tău, puse de strămoșii tăi, în moștenirea pe care o vei avea în țara pe care ți-o dă în stăpânire Domnul Dumnezeul tău. 15 Un singur*Num. 35:30. Cap. 17:6.Mat. 18:16.Ioan 8:17.2 Cor. 13:1.1 Tim. 5:19.Evr. 10:28. martor nu va fi de ajuns împotriva unui om, ca să adeverească vreo nelegiuire sau vreun păcat oarecare; un fapt nu va putea fi întemeiat decât pe mărturia a doi sau trei martori. 16 Când*Ps. 27:12;35:11. un martor mincinos se va ridica împotriva cuiva ca să-l învinuiască de vreo nelegiuire, 17 cei doi oameni cu pricina să se înfățișeze înaintea*Cap. 17:9;21:5. Domnului, înaintea preoților și judecătorilor care vor fi atunci în slujbă. 18 Judecătorii să facă cercetări amănunțite. Dacă se va afla că martorul acela este un martor mincinos și că a făcut o mărturisire mincinoasă împotriva fratelui său, 19 atunci*Prov. 19:5,9.Dan. 6:24. să-i faceți cum avea el de gând să facă fratelui său. Să scoți*Cap. 13:5;17:7;21:21;22:21,24;24:7. astfel răul din mijlocul tău. 20 În felul acesta, ceilalți vor*Cap. 17:13;21:21. auzi și se vor teme, și nu se va mai face o faptă așa de nelegiuită în mijlocul tău. 21 Să n-ai*Vers. 13. nicio milă, ci să ceri viață*Exod 21:23,24.Lev. 24:20.Mat. 5:38. pentru viață, ochi pentru ochi, dinte pentru dinte, mână pentru mână, picior pentru picior.
