1 And we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea, as Jehovah had said unto me; and we went round mount Seir many days. 2 And Jehovah spoke to me, saying, 3 Ye have gone round this mountain long enough: turn you northward. 4 And command the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the border of your brethren the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you; and ye shall be very guarded: 5 attack them not; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot-breadth; for I have given mount Seir as a possession unto Esau. 6 Ye shall buy of them food for money, that ye may eat; and water shall ye also buy of them for money, that ye may drink; 7 for Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim hath blessed thee in all the work of thy hand. He hath known thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years hath Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.

8 And we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, who dwelt in Seir, by the plain, by Elath, and by Ezion-geber, and we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab. 9 And Jehovah said to me, Distress not the Moabites, neither engage with them in battle; for I will not give thee of their land a possession; for unto the children of Lot have I given Ar as a possession. 10 (The Emim dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall as the Anakim. 11 They also are reckoned as giants like the Anakim; but the Moabites call them Emim. 12 And in Seir dwelt the Horites in times past; and the children of Esau dispossessed them, and destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did to the land of their possession, which Jehovah gave to them.) 13 Now rise up, and pass over the torrent Zered. And we passed over the torrent Zered. 14 Now the days in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we had come over the torrent Zered, were thirty-eight years; until the whole generation of the men of war was consumed from the midst of the camp, as Jehovah had sworn unto them. 15 Moreover the hand of Jehovah was against them to destroy them from the midst of the camp, until they were consumed. 16 And it came to pass when all the men of war were consumed, having died off from among the people, 17 that Jehovah spoke to me, saying, 18 Thou art to pass this day over the border of Moab, which is Ar, 19 and come near over against the children of Ammon; thou shalt not distress them nor attack them; for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon a possession; for unto the children of Lot have I given it as a possession. 20 (That also is reckoned a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in time past, and the Ammonites call them Zamzummim; 21 a people great, and many, and tall as the Anakim; and Jehovah destroyed them before them, and they dispossessed them, and dwelt in their stead; 22 as he did to the children of Esau, who dwelt in Seir, from before whom he destroyed the Horites; and they dispossessed them, and dwelt in their stead, even to this day. 23 And the Avvites who dwelt in the hamlets as far as Gazah — the Caphtorim, who came out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)

24 Rise up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon. Behold, I have given into thy hand Sihon the king of Heshbon, the Amorite, and his land: begin, take possession, and engage with him in battle. 25 This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the peoples under the whole heaven; who will hear report of thee, and will tremble, and quake because of thee. 26 And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon the king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, 27 Let me pass through thy land: by the highway alone will I go; I will neither turn to the right hand nor to the left. 28 Thou shalt sell me food for money that I may eat; and thou shalt give me water for money that I may drink; I will only pass through on my feet, 29 — as the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites who dwell in Ar, did to me, — until I shall pass over the Jordan into the land which Jehovah our God*GodHebrew: Elohim giveth us. 30 But Sihon the king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim hardened his spirit, and made his heart obdurate, that he might give him into thy hand, as it is this day. 31 And Jehovah said to me, Behold, I begin to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin, take possession, that thou mayest possess his land. 32 And Sihon came out against us for battle, he and all his people, to Jahaz. 33 But Jehovah our God*GodHebrew: Elohim gave him up before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and his whole people. 34 And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every city, men, and women, and little ones: we let none escape. 35 Only the cattle we took as booty for ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took. 36 From Aroer, which is on the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the ravine even to Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: Jehovah our God*GodHebrew: Elohim delivered all before us. 37 Only thou didst not approach the land of the children of Ammon, the whole border of the river Jabbok, nor the cities of the mountain, nor to whatsoever Jehovah our God*GodHebrew: Elohim had forbidden us.

Iată, de patruzeci de ani*Cap. 8:2-4. de când Domnul Dumnezeul tău este cu tine și n-ai dus lipsă de nimic.»’ 8 Am*Jud. 11:18. trecut pe departe de frații noștri, copiii lui Esau, care locuiesc în Seir, și pe departe de drumul care duce în câmpie, departe de Elat*1 Împ. 9:26. și de Ețion-Gheber; apoi ne-am întors și am apucat spre pustia Moabului.

9 Domnul mi-a zis: ‘Nu face război cu Moab și nu te apuca la luptă cu el, căci nu-ți voi da nimic să stăpânești în țara lui. Arul*Num. 21:28. l-am dat în stăpânire copiilor*Gen. 19:36,37. lui Lot. 10 (Mai înainte, aici locuiau emimii*Gen. 14:5.: un popor mare, mult la număr și de statură înaltă, ca anachimii*Num. 13:22,33. Cap. 9:2.. 11 Ei treceau drept refaimiți, ca și anachimii, dar moabiții îi numeau emimi. 12 Seir era locuit altădată*Gen. 14:6;36:20. Vers. 22. de horiți; copiii lui Esau i-au izgonit, i-au nimicit dinaintea lor și s-au așezat în locul lor, cum a făcut Israel în țara pe care o stăpânește și pe care i-a dat-o Domnul.) 13 Acum sculați-vă și treceți pârâul*Num. 21:12. Zered.’ Am trecut pârâul Zered. 14 Vremea cât au ținut călătoriile noastre de la Cades-Barnea*Num. 13:26. până la trecerea pârâului Zered a fost de treizeci și opt de ani, până*Num. 14:33;26:64. a pierit din mijlocul taberei tot neamul oamenilor de război, cum*Num. 14:35. Cap. 1:34,35.Ezec. 20:15. le jurase Domnul. 15 Mâna Domnului*Ps. 78:33;106:26. a fost împotriva lor, ca să-i nimicească din mijlocul taberei, până ce au pierit. 16 După ce au pierit toți bărbații de război, murind în mijlocul poporului, 17 Domnul mi-a vorbit și a zis: 18 ‘Să treci azi hotarul Moabului, la cetatea Ar, 19 și să te apropii de copiii lui Amon. Să nu faci război cu ei și să nu te iei la luptă cu ei, căci nu-ți voi da nimic de stăpânit în țara copiilor lui Amon: am dat-o în stăpânire copiilor*Gen. 19:38. lui Lot.’ 20 Țara aceasta trecea, de asemenea, ca o țară a lui Refaim; mai înainte, locuiau în ea refaimiții, și amoniții îi numeau*Gen. 14:5. zamzumimi: 21 un popor*Vers. 10. mare, mult la număr și de statură înaltă, ca anachimii. Domnul i-a nimicit dinaintea amoniților, care i-au izgonit și s-au așezat în locul lor. 22 (Așa a făcut Domnul și pentru copiii lui Esau, care*Gen. 36:8. locuiesc în Seir, când a nimicit pe horiți*Gen. 14:6;36:20-30. Vers. 12. dinaintea lor; ei i-au izgonit și s-au așezat în locul lor, până în ziua de azi. 23 De asemenea, aviții*Ios. 13:3., care locuiau în sate până la Gaza*Ier. 25:20., au fost nimiciți de caftoriți*Gen. 10:14.Amos 9:7., ieșiți din Caftor, care s-au așezat în locul lor.) 24 ‘Sculați-vă, plecați și treceți*Num. 21:13,14.Jud. 11:18,21. pârâul Arnon. Iată, îți dau în mâini pe Sihon, împăratul Hesbonului, Amoritul, și țara lui. Începe cucerirea, fă război cu el! 25 De azi*Exod 15:14,15. Cap. 11:25.Ios. 2:9,10. încolo, voi băga groaza și frica de tine în toate popoarele de sub cer; și, la auzul faimei tale, vor tremura și se vor îngrozi de tine.’

26 Din pustia Chedemot, am trimis soli la Sihon, împăratul Hesbonului*Cap. 20:10., cu vorbe de pace. Am trimis să-i spună: 27 ‘Lasă-mă*Num. 21:21,22.Jud. 11:19. să trec prin țara ta; voi ține drumul mare, fără să mă abat nici la dreapta, nici la stânga. 28 Să-mi vinzi pe preț de argint hrana pe care o voi mânca și să-mi dai cu preț de argint apa pe care o voi bea; nu voi face altceva decât să trec*Num. 20:19. cu piciorul, 29 lucru pe care mi l-au îngăduit*Num. 20:18. Cap. 23:3,4.Jud. 11:17,18. copiii lui Esau care locuiesc în Seir și moabiții care locuiesc în Ar – îngăduie-mi și tu lucrul acesta, până voi trece Iordanul, ca să intru în țara pe care ne-o dă Domnul Dumnezeul nostru.’ 30 Dar Sihon*Num. 21:23., împăratul Hesbonului, n-a vrut să ne lase să trecem pe la el, căci Domnul*Ios. 11:20. Dumnezeul tău i-a făcut*Exod 4:21. duhul neînduplecat și i-a împietrit inima, ca să-l dea în mâinile tale, cum vezi azi. 31 Domnul mi-a zis: ‘Vezi, acum încep să-ți dau*Cap. 1:8. pe Sihon și țara lui; începe și tu dar să-i iei în stăpânire țara ca s-o moștenești.’ 32 Sihon*Num. 21:23. ne-a ieșit înainte cu tot poporul lui, ca să lupte împotriva noastră, la Iahaț. 33 Domnul*Cap. 7:2;20:16. Dumnezeul nostru ni l-a dat în mâini și l-am*Num. 21:24. Cap. 29:7. bătut, pe el și pe fiii lui și pe tot poporul lui. 34 I-am luat atunci toate cetățile și le-am nimicit*Cap. 7:2,26. cu desăvârșire: bărbați, femei și prunci i-am nimicit cu desăvârșire și n-am lăsat să scape niciunul măcar. 35 Numai vitele le-am răpit pentru noi, precum și prada din cetățile pe care le luaserăm. 36 De la Aroer*Cap. 3:12;4:48.Ios. 13:9., care este pe malurile pârâului Arnon, și de la cetatea care este în vale până la Galaad, n-a fost nicio cetate prea tare pentru noi: Domnul Dumnezeul nostru ni le-a dat pe toate*Ps. 44:3. în mână. 37 Dar de țara copiilor lui Amon nu te-ai apropiat, de toate malurile pârâului Iaboc*Gen. 32:22.Num. 21:24. Cap. 3:16., de cetățile de la munte și de toate*Vers. 5,9,19. locurile pe care te-a oprit Domnul Dumnezeul tău să le lovești.
