1 The word that came to Jeremiah from Jehovah in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah: that year was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar. 2 And the king of Babylon’s army was then besieging Jerusalem; and the prophet Jeremiah was shut up in the court of the guard, which was in the king of Judah’s house. 3 For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, Why dost thou prophesy and say, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it; 4 and Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans; for he shall certainly be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall behold his eyes; 5 and he shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there shall he be until I visit him, saith Jehovah: though ye fight with the Chaldeans, ye shall not prosper? 6 And Jeremiah said, The word of Jehovah came unto me, saying, 7 Behold, Hanameel, the son of Shallum thine uncle, shall come unto thee, saying, Buy for thyself my field which is in Anathoth; for thine is the right of redemption, to buy it. 8 And Hanameel, mine uncle’s son, came to me in the court of the guard according to the word of Jehovah, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the land of Benjamin; for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine: buy it for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of Jehovah. 9 And I bought of Hanameel, mine uncle’s son, the field which is in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, seventeen shekels of silver. 10 And I subscribed the writing, and sealed it, and took witnesses, and weighed the money in the balances. 11 And I took the writing of the purchase, that which was sealed according to the law and the statutes, and that which was open; 12 and I gave the writing of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Nerijah, the son of Maaseiah, in the sight of Hanameel mine uncle’s son, and in the presence of the witnesses that had subscribed the writing of purchase, before all the Jews that were sitting in the court of the guard. 13 And I charged Baruch in their presence, saying, 14 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel: Take these writings, this writing of the purchase, both that which is sealed and this writing which is open; and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may remain many days. 15 For thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel: Houses and fields and vineyards shall again be purchased in this land.

16 And after I had given the writing of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Nerijah, I prayed unto Jehovah saying, 17 Alas, Lord Jehovah! Behold, thou hast made the heavens and the earth by thy great power and stretched-out arm; there is nothing too hard for thee: 18 who shewest mercy unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them, thou, the great, the mighty ·God*GodHebrew: El — Jehovah of hosts is his name; 19 great in counsel and mighty in work, whose eyes are open upon all the ways of the children of men, to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings: 20 who hast displayed signs and wonders unto this day, in the land of Egypt and in Israel and among other men; and hast made thee a name, as at this day. 21 And thou broughtest forth thy people Israel out of the land of Egypt by signs, and by wonders, and by a powerful hand, and by a stretched-out arm, and by great terror; 22 and didst give them this land, which thou hadst sworn unto their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey. 23 And they came in and possessed it: but they hearkened not unto thy voice, neither walked in thy law; they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do; so that thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them. 24 Behold the mounds, they are come unto the city for taking it; and the city is given over into the hand of the Chaldeans, that fight against it, by the sword, and the famine, and the pestilence: and what thou hast spoken is come to pass; and behold, thou seest it. 25 And thou, Lord Jehovah, thou hast said unto me, Buy for thyself the field for money, and take witnesses; — and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.

26 And the word of Jehovah came unto Jeremiah, saying, 27 Behold, I am Jehovah, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me? 28 Therefore thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, and he shall take it. 29 And the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come in and set fire to this city, and shall burn it, and the houses upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal, and poured out drink-offerings unto other gods, to provoke me to anger. 30 For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have been doing only evil in my sight from their youth; for the children of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, saith Jehovah. 31 For this city hath been to me a provocation of mine anger and of my fury from the day that they built it even unto this day; that I should remove it from before my face, 32 because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 33 And they have turned unto me the back, and not the face; and though I taught them, rising early and teaching, they hearkened not to receive instruction. 34 And they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to defile it; 35 and they have built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause to pass through the fire their sons and their daughters unto Molech: which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin. 36 And now therefore Jehovah, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel, saith thus concerning this city, whereof ye say, It hath been given over into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence: 37 Behold, I will gather them out of all the countries whither I have driven them, in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely. 38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God*GodHebrew: Elohim39 And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me all their days, for the good of them, and of their children after them. 40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not draw back from them, to do them good; and I will put my fear in their heart, that they may not turn aside from me. 41 And I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will assuredly plant them in this land with my whole heart and with my whole soul. 42 For thus saith Jehovah: Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have spoken concerning them. 43 And fields shall be bought in this land, whereof ye say, It is desolate without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans. 44 Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe the writings, and seal them, and take witnesses, in the land of Benjamin, and in the environs of Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the hill-country, and in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the south: for I will turn their captivity, saith Jehovah.

Acesta era anul al optsprezecelea al lui Nebucadnețar. 2 Oastea împăratului Babilonului împresura pe atunci Ierusalimul și prorocul Ieremia era închis în curtea*Neem. 3:25. Cap. 33:1; 37:21; 38:6; 39:14. temniței, care ținea de casa împăratului lui Iuda. 3 Zedechia, împăratul lui Iuda, pusese să-l închidă și-i zisese: „Pentru ce prorocești și zici: ‘Așa vorbește Domnul: «Iată*Cap. 34:2., dau cetatea aceasta în mâinile împăratului Babilonului, și o va lua; 4 Zedechia, împăratul lui Iuda, nu va*Cap. 34:3;38:18,23;39:5;52:9. scăpa de haldeeni, ci va fi dat în mâinile împăratului Babilonului, îi va vorbi gură către gură și se vor vedea față în față. 5 Împăratul Babilonului va duce pe Zedechia la Babilon, unde va rămâne până când*Cap. 27:22. Îmi voi aduce Eu aminte de el», zice Domnul. «Chiar dacă*Cap. 21:4;33:5. vă bateți împotriva haldeenilor, nu veți avea izbândă»’?" 6 Ieremia a zis: „Cuvântul Domnului mi-a vorbit astfel: 7 ‘Iată că Hanameel, fiul unchiului tău Șalum, va veni la tine să-ți spună: «Cumpără ogorul meu care este la Anatot, căci tu ai drept*Lev. 25:24,25,32.Rut 4:4. de răscumpărare ca să-l cumperi.»’ 8 Și Hanameel, fiul unchiului meu, a venit la mine, după Cuvântul Domnului, în curtea temniței și mi-a zis: ‘Cumpără ogorul meu, care este la Anatot, în țara lui Beniamin, căci tu ai drept de moștenire și de răscumpărare. Cumpără-l!’ Am cunoscut că era Cuvântul Domnului. 9 Și am cumpărat de la Hanameel, fiul unchiului meu, ogorul de la Anatot și i-am cântărit*Gen. 23:16.Zah. 11:12. argintul – șaptesprezece sicli de argint. 10 Am scris un zapis, pe care l-am pecetluit, am pus martori și am cântărit argintul într-o cumpănă. 11 Am luat apoi zapisul de cumpărare, pe cel care era pecetluit după lege și obiceiuri și pe cel ce era deschis 12 și am dat zapisul de cumpărare lui*Cap. 36:4. Baruc, fiul lui Neriia, fiul lui Mahseia, în fața lui Hanameel, fiul unchiului meu, în fața martorilor*Is. 8:2. care iscăliseră zapisul de cumpărare și în fața tuturor iudeilor care se aflau în curtea temniței. 13 Și am dat lui Baruc înaintea lor următoarea poruncă: 14 ‘Așa vorbește Domnul oștirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Ia zapisele acestea de cumpărare, cel pecetluit și cel deschis, și pune-le într-un vas de pământ, ca să se păstreze multă vreme!» 15 Căci așa vorbește Domnul oștirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Iarăși*Vers. 37,43. se vor mai cumpăra case, ogoare și vii în țara aceasta.»’ 16 După ce am dat zapisul de cumpărare lui Baruc, fiul lui Neriia, am făcut Domnului această rugăciune: 17 ‘Ah, Doamne Dumnezeule, iată, Tu ai făcut*2 Împ. 19:15. cerurile și pământul cu puterea Ta cea mare și cu brațul Tău întins: nimic nu este de mirat*Gen. 18:14. Vers. 27.Luca 1:37. din partea Ta! 18 Tu dai îndurare până la al miilea*Exod 20:6;34:7.Deut. 5:9,10. neam de oameni și pedepsești nelegiuirea părinților în sânul copiilor lor după ei. Tu ești Dumnezeul cel mare, cel puternic*Is. 9:6., al cărui Nume este Domnul*Cap. 10:16. oștirilor! 19 Tu ești mare*Is. 28:29. la sfat și puternic la faptă, Tu ai ochii*Iov 34:21.Ps. 33:13.Prov. 5:21. Cap. 16:17. deschiși asupra tuturor căilor copiilor oamenilor, ca să*Cap. 17:10. dai fiecăruia după căile lui, după rodul faptelor lui. 20 Tu ai făcut minuni și semne mari în țara Egiptului și până în ziua de azi și în Israel și printre oameni și Ți-ai făcut un Nume*Exod 9:16.1 Cron. 17:21.Is. 63:12.Dan. 9:15. așa cum este astăzi. 21 Ai scos*Exod 6:6.2 Sam. 7:23.1 Cron. 17:21.Ps. 136:11,12. din țara Egiptului pe poporul tău Israel, cu minuni și semne mari, cu mână tare și cu braț întins și cu o mare groază. 22 Tu le-ai dat țara*Exod 3:8,17. Cap. 11:5. aceasta pe care juraseși părinților lor că le-o vei da, țară în care curge lapte și miere. 23 Ei au venit și au luat-o în stăpânire. Dar n-au*Neem. 9:26. Cap. 11:8.Dan. 9:10-14. ascultat de glasul Tău, n-au păzit Legea Ta și n-au făcut tot ce le porunciseși să facă. Și atunci ai trimis peste ei toate aceste nenorociri! 24 Iată, șanțurile de apărare se înalță împotriva cetății și o amenință; cetatea va fi*Vers. 25,36. dată în mâinile haldeenilor, care luptă împotriva ei, biruită de sabie*Cap. 14:12., de foamete și de ciumă. Ce ai spus Tu s-a întâmplat: Tu Însuți vezi! 25 Și totuși, Doamne Dumnezeule, Tu mi-ai zis: «Cumpără-ți un ogor cu argint și pune și martori!», când totuși cetatea este*Vers. 24. dată în mâinile haldeenilor!’ 26 Cuvântul Domnului a vorbit atunci lui Ieremia astfel: 27 ‘Iată, Eu sunt Domnul Dumnezeul*Num. 16:22. oricărei făpturi. Este ceva de mirat*Vers. 17. din partea Mea? 28 De aceea, așa vorbește Domnul: «Iată, dau*Vers. 3. cetatea aceasta în mâinile haldeenilor și în mâinile lui Nebucadnețar, împăratul Babilonului, și o va lua. 29 Haldeenii, care luptă împotriva cetății acesteia, vor intra, îi vor pune*Cap. 12:10;37:8,10;52:13. foc și o vor arde, împreună cu casele pe acoperișul*Cap. 19:13. cărora au adus tămâie lui Baal și au turnat jertfe de băutură altor dumnezei, ca să Mă mânie. 30 Căci copiii lui Israel și copiii lui Iuda n-au făcut din tinerețea lor decât ce este rău*Cap. 2:7;3:25;7:22,26;22:21.Ezec. 20:28. înaintea Mea; copiii lui Israel numai M-au mâniat întruna cu lucrarea mâinilor lor», zice Domnul. 31 «Căci cetatea aceasta Îmi ațâță mânia și urgia din ziua când s-a zidit și până azi, de aceea vreau s-o iau*2 Împ. 23:27;24:3. dinaintea Feței Mele, 32 din pricina tot răului pe care l-au făcut copiii lui Israel și copiii lui Iuda ca să Mă mânie, ei*Is. 1:4,6.Dan. 9:8., împărații lor, căpeteniile lor, preoții lor și prorocii lor, oamenii lui Iuda și locuitorii Ierusalimului. 33 Mi-au întors*Cap. 2:27;7:24. spatele, nu s-au uitat la Mine; i-am învățat*Cap. 7:13., i-am învățat întruna, dar n-au ascultat și nu s-au învățat. 34 Ci și-au pus urâciunile*Cap. 7:30,31;23:11.Ezec. 8:5,6. idolești în Casa peste care este chemat Numele Meu și au spurcat-o. 35 Au zidit înălțimi lui Baal în valea Ben-Hinom, ca să treacă prin*Cap. 7:31;19:5. foc lui Moloh*Lev. 18:21.1 Împ. 11:33. pe fiii și fiicele lor; lucru pe care nu*Cap. 7:31. li-l poruncisem și nici nu-Mi trecuse prin gând că au să facă asemenea grozăvii ca să ducă pe Iuda în păcat.»’ 36 Și acum, așa vorbește Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel despre cetatea aceasta, despre care ziceți: ‘Va*Vers. 24. fi dată în mâinile împăratului Babilonului, biruită prin sabie, prin foamete și prin ciumă’: 37 ‘Iată, îi voi strânge*Deut. 30:3. Cap. 23:3;29:14;31:10.Ezec. 37:21. din toate țările unde i-am izgonit în mânia Mea, în urgia Mea și în marea Mea supărare; îi voi aduce înapoi în locul acesta și-i voi face să locuiască în*Cap. 23:6;33:16. liniște acolo. 38 Ei vor*Cap. 24:7;30:22;31:33. fi poporul Meu, și Eu voi fi Dumnezeul lor. 39 Le voi da o inimă*Cap. 24:7.Ezec. 11:19,20. și o cale ca să se teamă de Mine totdeauna, spre fericirea lor și a copiilor lor după ei. 40 Voi încheia*Is. 55:3. Cap. 31:31. cu ei un legământ veșnic, că nu Mă voi mai întoarce de la ei, ci le voi face bine și le voi pune în inimă frica*Cap. 31:33. de Mine, ca să nu se depărteze de Mine. 41 Mă voi*Deut. 30:9.Ţef. 3:17. bucura să le fac bine, îi voi sădi*Cap. 24:6;31:28.Amos 9:15. cu adevărat în țara aceasta, din toată inima și din tot sufletul Meu.’ 42 Căci așa vorbește Domnul: ‘După cum*Cap. 31:28. am adus peste poporul acesta toate aceste mari nenorociri, tot așa voi aduce peste ei tot binele pe care li-l făgăduiesc. 43 Se vor cumpăra*Vers. 15. iarăși ogoare în țara aceasta, despre*Cap. 33:10. care ziceți că este o pustie fără oameni și fără dobitoace și că este dată în mâinile haldeenilor. 44 Se vor cumpăra iarăși ogoare pe argint, se vor scrie zapise, se vor pecetlui, se vor pune martori în țara*Cap. 17:26. lui Beniamin și în împrejurimile Ierusalimului, în cetățile lui Iuda, în cetățile de la munte, în cetățile de la câmpie și în cetățile de la miazăzi, căci voi aduce*Cap. 33:7,11,26. înapoi pe prinșii lor de război’, zice Domnul."
