1 And these are the words of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the residue of the elders of the captivity, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon 2 (after that Jeconiah the king, and the queen, and the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the craftsmen, and the smiths, had departed from Jerusalem); 3 by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkijah (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon, unto Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), saying, 4 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel, unto all the captivity, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon: 5 Build houses, and dwell in them, and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them. 6 Take wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; and multiply there, and be not diminished. 7 And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray unto Jehovah for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.

8 For thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel: Let not your prophets that are in your midst, nor your diviners deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams, which ye like to dream. 9 For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith Jehovah. 10 For thus saith Jehovah: When seventy years shall be accomplished for Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in bringing you back to this place. 11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith Jehovah, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you in your latter end a hope. 12 And ye shall call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you; 13 and ye shall seek me and find me, for ye shall search for me with all your heart, 14 and I will be found of you, saith Jehovah. And I will turn your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith Jehovah; and I will bring you again into the place whence I have caused you to be carried away captive.

15 If ye say, Jehovah hath raised us up prophets in Babylon; 16 yea, thus saith Jehovah concerning the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and concerning all the people that dwell in this city, your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity; 17 thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Behold, I will send against them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like the vile figs, that cannot be eaten for badness. 18 And I will pursue them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will give them over to be driven hither and thither into all the kingdoms of the earth, to be an execration, and an astonishment, and a hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I will drive them: 19 because they have not hearkened to my words, saith Jehovah, wherewith I sent unto them my servants the prophets, rising early and sending; but ye have not hearkened, saith Jehovah. 20 But ye, all ye of the captivity, whom I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon, hear the word of Jehovah. 21 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and concerning Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy falsehood unto you in my name: Behold, I will give them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall smite them before your eyes. 22 And of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captivity of Judah that are in Babylon, saying, Jehovah make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire; 23 because they have committed infamy in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbours' wives, and have spoken words of falsehood in my name, which I had not commanded them: and I am he that knoweth, and amwitness, saith Jehovah.

24 And thou shalt speak to Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying, 25 Thus speaketh Jehovah of hosts, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thy name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying, 26 Jehovah hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that there should be officers in the house of Jehovah, over every madman and self-made prophet, that thou shouldest put him in the stocks and in the shackles. 27 And now, why hast thou not reproved Jeremiah of Anathoth, who maketh himself a prophet to you? 28 Forasmuch as he hath sent unto us in Babylon, saying, It will be long; build houses, and dwell in them, and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them. 29 — And Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of the prophet Jeremiah. 30 And the word of Jehovah came unto Jeremiah, saying, 31 Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus saith Jehovah concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because that Shemaiah hath prophesied unto you, and I sent him not, and he hath caused you to trust in falsehood; 32 therefore thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed: he shall not have a man to dwell among this people; neither shall he see the good that I will do for my people, saith Jehovah; because he hath spoken revolt against Jehovah.

1 Iată cuprinsul epistolei pe care a trimis-o prorocul Ieremia din Ierusalim către rămășița bătrânilor din robie, preoților, prorocilor și întregului popor pe care-i dusese în robie Nebucadnețar, din Ierusalim la Babilon, 2 după ce împăratul Ieconia*2 Împ. 24:12. Cap. 22:26; 28:4., împărăteasa, famenii dregători, căpeteniile lui Iuda și ale Ierusalimului, lemnarii și fierarii au părăsit Ierusalimul. 3 Le-a trimis-o prin Eleasa, fiul lui Șafan, și prin Ghemaria, fiul lui Hilchia, trimiși la Babilon de Zedechia, împăratul lui Iuda, la Nebucadnețar, împăratul Babilonului. Ea cuprindea următoarele: 4 „Așa vorbește Domnul oștirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel, către toți prinșii de război pe care i-am dus din Ierusalim la Babilon: 5 ‘Zidiți*Vers. 28. case și locuiți-le; sădiți grădini și mâncați din roadele lor! 6 Luați-vă neveste și faceți fii și fiice; însurați-vă fiii și măritați-vă fetele, să facă fii și fiice, ca să vă înmulțiți acolo unde sunteți și să nu vă împuținați. 7 Urmăriți binele cetății în care v-am dus în robie și rugați-vă*Ezra 6:10.1 Tim. 2:2. Domnului pentru ea, pentru că fericirea voastră atârnă de fericirea ei!’ 8 Căci așa vorbește Domnul oștirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel: ‘Nu vă lăsați*Cap. 14:14;23:21;27:14,15.Efes. 5:6. amăgiți de prorocii voștri, care sunt în mijlocul vostru, nici de ghicitorii voștri; n-ascultați nici de visătorii voștri, ale căror vise voi le pricinuiți! 9 Căci ei*Vers. 31. vă prorocesc minciuni în Numele Meu. Eu nu i-am trimis’, zice Domnul. 10 Dar iată ce zice Domnul: ‘De îndată ce vor trece șaptezeci*2 Cron. 36:21,22.Ezra 1:1. Cap. 25:12; 27:22.Dan. 9:2. de ani ai Babilonului, Îmi voi aduce aminte de voi și voi împlini față de voi făgăduința Mea cea bună, aducându-vă înapoi în locul acesta. 11 Căci Eu știu gândurile pe care le am cu privire la voi’, zice Domnul, ‘gânduri de pace, și nu de nenorocire, ca să vă dau un viitor și o nădejde. 12 Voi Mă veți chema*Dan. 9:3., și veți pleca; Mă veți ruga, și vă voi asculta. 13 Mă veți*Lev. 26:39,40.Deut. 30:1. căuta, și Mă veți găsi dacă Mă veți căuta cu toată*Cap. 24:7. inima. 14 Mă voi lăsa*Deut. 4:7.Ps. 32:6;46:1.Is. 55:6. să fiu găsit de voi’, zice Domnul, ‘și voi aduce înapoi pe prinșii voștri de război; vă voi strânge*Cap. 23:3,8;30:3;32:37. din toate neamurile și din toate locurile în care v-am izgonit’, zice Domnul, ‘și vă voi aduce înapoi în locul de unde v-am dus în robie.’ 15 Totuși voi ziceți: ‘Dumnezeu ne-a ridicat proroci în Babilon!’ 16 Așa vorbește Domnul asupra împăratului care șade pe scaunul de domnie al lui David, asupra întregului popor care locuiește în cetatea aceasta, asupra fraților voștri care n-au mers cu voi în robie, 17 așa vorbește Domnul oștirilor: ‘Iată, voi trimite între ei sabie*Cap. 24:10., foamete și ciumă și-i voi face ca niște smochine*Cap. 24:8. grozave care, de rele ce sunt, nu se pot mânca. 18 Îi voi urmări*Deut. 28:25.2 Cron. 29:8. Cap. 15:4;24:9;34:17. cu sabie, cu foamete și cu ciumă, îi voi face o pricină de spaimă pentru toate împărățiile pământului, de blestem*Cap. 26:6;42:18., de pustiire, de batjocură și de ocară printre toate neamurile pe unde îi voi izgoni, 19 pentru că n-au ascultat cuvintele Mele’, zice Domnul, ‘ei, cărora în nenumărate rânduri le-am trimis*Cap. 25:4;32:33. pe robii Mei, prorocii, dar n-ați vrut să ascultați’, zice Domnul. 20 Voi însă ascultați Cuvântul Domnului, voi, toți prinșii de război pe care v-am trimis din Ierusalim în Babilon! 21 Așa vorbește Domnul oștirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel, despre Ahab, fiul lui Colaia, și despre Zedechia, fiul lui Maaseia, care vă prorocesc minciuni în Numele Meu: ‘Iată, îi dau în mâinile lui Nebucadnețar, împăratul Babilonului, și-i va omorî sub ochii voștri. 22 Vor sluji ca prilej de blestem*Gen. 48:20.Is. 65:15. între toți prinșii de război ai lui Iuda care sunt la Babilon. Și se va zice: «Să-ți facă Domnul ca lui Zedechia și ca lui Ahab, pe care*Dan. 3:6. împăratul Babilonului i-a fript în foc!» 23 Și lucrul acesta se va întâmpla pentru că au făcut o*Cap. 23:14. mișelie în Israel, preacurvind cu nevestele aproapelui lor, și pentru că au spus minciuni în Numele Meu, când Eu nu le dădusem nicio poruncă. Știu lucrul acesta și sunt martor’, zice Domnul. 24 Iar lui Șemaia, Nehelamitul, să-i spui: 25 ‘Așa vorbește Domnul oștirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Tu ai trimis în numele tău întregului popor din Ierusalim, lui*2 Împ. 25:18. Cap. 21:1. Țefania, fiul lui Maaseia, preotul, și tuturor preoților, o scrisoare cu următorul cuprins: 26 ‹Domnul te-a pus preot în locul preotului Iehoiada, ca să priveghezi*Cap. 20:1. în Casa Domnului peste toți nebunii*2 Împ. 9:11.Fapte 26:24. și peste toți cei ce se dau drept proroci, ca să-i arunci în butuci*Cap. 20:2. și în fiare. 27 Acum, pentru ce nu pedepsești pe Ieremia din Anatot, care prorocește printre voi? 28 Ba încă a trimis chiar să ne spună în Babilon: „Robia va fi lungă; zidiți*Vers. 5. case și locuiți-le; sădiți grădini și mâncați din roadele lor!"›»’ 29 (Preotul Țefania citise în adevăr scrisoarea aceasta în fața prorocului Ieremia.) 30 Și Cuvântul Domnului a vorbit lui Ieremia astfel: 31 ‘Trimite să spună tuturor celor din robie: «Așa vorbește Domnul despre Șemaia, Nehelamitul: ‹Pentru că Șemaia vă prorocește fără*Cap. 28:15. să-l fi trimis Eu și vă insuflă o încredere mincinoasă, 32 iată ce zice Domnul: „Voi pedepsi pe Șemaia, Nehelamitul, și sămânța lui: niciunul din ai lui nu va locui în mijlocul poporului acestuia și nu va vedea binele pe care-l voi face poporului Meu", zice Domnul, „căci*Cap. 28:16. el a propovăduit răzvrătire împotriva Domnului."›»’"
