1 The word that came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, after that Nebuzar-adan the captain of the body-guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him, being bound in chains, among all the captivity of Jerusalem and Judah, that were carried away captive to Babylon. 2 And the captain of the body-guard took Jeremiah, and said unto him, Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim pronounced this evil upon this place, 3 and Jehovah hath brought it about and done according as he said; for ye have sinned against Jehovah, and have not hearkened unto his voice, therefore this thing is come upon you. 4 And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains that are upon thy hand. If it seem good in thy sight to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will keep mine eye upon thee; but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me to Babylon, forbear. See, all the land is before thee: whither it seemeth good and right in thy sight to go, thither go. 5 And while he had not yet given answer; he said, Yea, go back to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath appointed over the cities of Judah, and abide with him in the midst of the people; or go wheresoever it seemeth right in thy sight to go. And the captain of the body-guard gave him provisions and a present, and let him go. 6 And Jeremiah came unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah, and abode with him among the people that remained in the land.

7 And all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam over the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poor of the land, of them that had not been carried away captive to Babylon. 8 And they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah; even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men. 9 And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan swore unto them and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you. 10 And as for me, behold, I dwell at Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldeans, who will come unto us; and ye, gather wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities which ye have taken. 11 Likewise all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon and in Edom, and that were in all the lands, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah, and that he had appointed over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan; 12 and all the Jews returned out of all the places whither they had been driven, and came to the land of Judah to Gedaliah, unto Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits in great abundance. 13 And Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah unto Mizpah, 14 and said unto him, Dost thou indeed know that Baalis the king of the children of Ammon hath sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to smite thee to death? But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam believed them not. 15 And Johanan the son of Kareah spoke to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will smite Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and no man shall know it: why should he take thy life, and all they of Judah who are gathered unto thee be scattered, and the remnant of Judah perish? 16 But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, Thou shalt not do this thing; for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael.

1 Iată cuvântul spus lui Ieremia din partea Domnului, după ce*Cap. 39:14. Nebuzaradan, căpetenia străjerilor, i-a dat drumul din Rama. Când a trimis să-l aducă, Ieremia era încă legat cu lanțuri, împreună cu toți prinșii de război din Ierusalim și din Iuda, care aveau să fie duși în Babilon. 2 Căpetenia străjerilor a trimis să aducă pe Ieremia și i-a*Cap. 50:7. zis: „Domnul Dumnezeul tău a vestit mai dinainte aceste nenorociri împotriva locului acestuia; 3 Domnul a adus și a împlinit ce spusese, și lucrurile acestea vi s-au întâmplat pentru că*Deut. 29:24,25.Dan. 9:11. ați păcătuit împotriva Domnului și n-ați ascultat glasul Lui. 4 Acum, iată, te izbăvesc astăzi din lanțurile pe care le ai la mâini; dacă vrei*Cap. 39:12. să vii cu mine la Babilon, vino, și voi îngriji de tine. Dar, dacă nu-ți place să vii cu mine la Babilon, nu veni. Iată, toată țara*Gen. 20:15. este înaintea ta, du-te unde vei crede și unde-ți place să te duci!" 5 Însă, fiindcă el zăbovea să răspundă, „întoarce-te", a adăugat el, „la Ghedalia, fiul lui Ahicam, fiul lui Șafan, pe care*2 Împ. 25:22. l-a pus împăratul Babilonului peste cetățile lui Iuda, și rămâi cu el în mijlocul poporului sau du-te oriunde vei vrea să te duci!" Căpetenia străjerilor i-a dat merinde și daruri și i-a dat drumul. 6 Ieremia*Cap. 39:14. s-a dus la Ghedalia, fiul lui Ahicam, la Mițpa*Jud. 20:1., și a rămas cu el în mijlocul poporului care rămăsese în țară.

7 Când au aflat*2 Împ. 25:23. toate căpeteniile oștirilor care rămăseseră pe câmp cu oamenii lor că împăratul Babilonului a pus ca dregător al țării pe Ghedalia, fiul lui Ahicam, și că i-a încredințat bărbații, femeile, copiii și pe aceia din săracii*Cap. 39:10. țării care nu fuseseră luați robi în Babilon, 8 s-au dus la Ghedalia, la Mițpa, și anume: Ismael*Cap. 41:1., fiul lui Netania, Iohanan și Ionatan, fiul lui Careah, Seraia, fiul lui Tanhumet, fiii lui Efai din Netofa, și Iezania, fiul unui maacatit, ei și oamenii lor. 9 Ghedalia, fiul lui Ahicam, fiul lui Șafan, le-a jurat lor și oamenilor lor zicând: „Nu vă temeți să slujiți haldeenilor; rămâneți în țară, slujiți împăratului Babilonului și o veți duce bine! 10 Iată că eu rămân la Mițpa, ca să fiu la porunca haldeenilor care vor veni la noi. Voi strângeți deci vinul, poamele de vară și untdelemnul, puneți-le în vasele voastre și locuiți în cetățile în care vă aflați!" 11 Toți iudeii care erau în țara Moabului, la amoniți, în țara Edomului și în toate țările au auzit că împăratul Babilonului lăsase o rămășiță în Iuda și că le dăduse ca dregător pe Ghedalia, fiul lui Ahicam, fiul lui Șafan. 12 Și toți iudeii aceștia s-au întors din toate locurile pe unde erau împrăștiați, au venit în țara lui Iuda la Ghedalia, la Mițpa, și au avut un mare belșug de vin și de poame de vară. 13 Iohanan, fiul lui Careah, și toate căpeteniile oștilor care mai erau pe câmp au venit la Ghedalia, la Mițpa, 14 și i-au zis: „Știi că Baalis*Cap. 41:10., împăratul amoniților, a însărcinat pe Ismael, fiul lui Netania, să te omoare?" Dar Ghedalia, fiul lui Ahicam, nu i-a crezut. 15 Și Iohanan, fiul lui Careah, a spus în taină lui Ghedalia, la Mițpa: „Dă-mi voie să mă duc să omor pe Ismael, fiul lui Netania. Nimeni n-are să știe. Pentru ce să te omoare el și să se risipească toți cei din Iuda care s-au strâns la tine și să piară rămășița lui Iuda?" 16 Ghedalia, fiul lui Ahicam, a răspuns lui Iohanan, fiul lui Careah: „Nu face lucrul acesta, căci ce spui tu despre Ismael nu este adevărat!"
