1 Thus saith Jehovah: Go and buy a potter’s earthen flagon, and take of the elders of the people, and of the elders of the priests; 2 and go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the pottery-gate, and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee, 3 and say, Hear the word of Jehovah, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem. Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel: Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, the which whosoever heareth, his ears shall tingle; 4 because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place from me, and have burned incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah; and have filled this place with the blood of innocents; 5 and they have built the high places of Baal, to burn their sons in the fire as burnt-offerings unto Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it up into my mind: 6 therefore behold, days come, saith Jehovah, that this place shall no more be called Topheth, nor Valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter. 7 And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of them that seek their life, and their carcases will I give as food to the fowl of the heavens and to the beasts of the earth. 8 And I will make this city an astonishment and a hissing; every one that passeth by shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof. 9 And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat everyone the flesh of his friend, in the siege and in the straitness wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their lives, shall straiten them.

10 And thou shalt break the flagon in the sight of the men that go with thee, 11 and shalt say unto them, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter’s vessel, that cannot be made whole again. And they shall bury in Topheth, till there be no place to bury. 12 Thus will I do unto this place, saith Jehovah, and to the inhabitants thereof, and make this city as Topheth. 13 And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah shall be as the place of Topheth, defiled, all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense unto all the host of the heavens, and have poured out drink-offerings unto other gods. 14 And Jeremiah came from Topheth, whither Jehovah had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of Jehovah’s house, and said to all the people, 15 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel: Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all her cities all the evil that I have spoken against it; for they have hardened their necks, not to hear my words.

Ben-Hinom, care este la intrarea porții olăriei, și acolo să vestești cuvintele pe care ți le voi spune. 3 Să spui*Cap. 17:20.: ‘Ascultați Cuvântul Domnului, împărați ai lui Iuda și locuitori ai Ierusalimului!

Așa vorbește Domnul oștirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Iată, voi aduce peste locul acesta o nenorocire care va face să țiuie urechile*1 Sam. 3:11.2 Împ. 21:12. oricui va auzi vorbindu-se de ea. 4 Pentru că M-au părăsit*Deut. 28:20.Is. 65:11. Cap. 2:13,17,19;15:6;17:13., au spurcat locul acesta, au adus în el tămâie altor dumnezei pe care nu-i cunoșteau nici ei, nici părinții lor, nici împărații lui Iuda și au umplut locul acesta cu sânge*2 Împ. 21:16. Cap. 2:34. nevinovat. 5 Au zidit*Cap. 7:31,32;32:35. și înălțimi lui Baal, ca să ardă pe copiii lor în foc ca arderi-de-tot lui Baal – lucru pe care nici nu-l poruncisem*Lev. 18:21., nici nu-l rânduisem și nici nu-Mi trecuse prin minte. 6 De aceea, iată, vin zile», zice Domnul, «când locul acesta nu se va mai numi Tofet, nici*Ios. 15:8. Valea Ben-Hinom, ci se va numi Valea Măcelului! 7 În locul acesta voi zădărnici sfatul lui Iuda și al Ierusalimului, îi voi face*Lev. 26:17.Deut. 28:25. să cadă uciși de sabie înaintea vrăjmașilor lor și de mâna celor ce vor să le ia viața. Trupurile lor moarte*Ps. 79:2. Cap. 7:33;16:4;34:20. le voi da hrană păsărilor cerului și fiarelor pământului. 8 Voi face din cetatea aceasta o groază și o batjocură*Cap. 18:16;49:13;50:13.; așa că toți cei ce vor trece pe lângă ea se vor îngrozi și vor șuiera când vor vedea toate rănile ei. 9 Îi voi face să mănânce carnea*Lev. 26:29.Deut. 28:53.Is. 9:20.Plâng. 4:10. fiilor și fiicelor lor, așa că își vor mânca unii carnea altora, în mijlocul necazului și strâmtorării în care-i vor aduce vrăjmașii lor și cei ce vor să le ia viața.»’ 10 Să spargi*Cap. 51:63,64. apoi vasul sub ochii oamenilor care vor merge cu tine. 11 Și să le spui: ‘Așa vorbește Domnul oștirilor: «Tocmai așa voi zdrobi*Ps. 2:9.Is. 30:14.Plâng. 4:2. pe poporul acesta și cetatea aceasta cum se sparge vasul unui olar, fără să poată fi făcut la loc. Și morții vor fi îngropați*Cap. 7:32. în Tofet din lipsă de loc pentru îngropare. 12 Așa voi face locului acestuia», zice Domnul, «și locuitorilor lui și voi face cetatea aceasta ca Tofetul. 13 Casele Ierusalimului și casele împăraților lui Iuda vor fi necurate ca*2 Împ. 23:10. Tofetul, toate casele pe acoperișul*2 Împ. 23:12. Cap. 32:29.Ţef. 1:5. cărora se aducea tămâie întregii oștiri a cerurilor și se turnau jertfe de băutură*Cap. 7:18. altor dumnezei!»’"

14 Ieremia s-a întors din Tofet, unde-l trimisese Domnul să prorocească. Apoi a stat în curtea*2 Cron. 20:5. Casei Domnului și a zis întregului popor: 15 „Așa vorbește Domnul oștirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel: ‘Iată, voi aduce peste cetatea aceasta și peste toate cetățile care țin de ea toate nenorocirile pe care i le-am vestit mai dinainte, pentru că și-au înțepenit gâtul*Cap. 7:26;17:23. ca să n-asculte cuvintele Mele.’"
