1 The word that came unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, when king Zedekiah sent unto him Pashur the son of Malchijah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, saying, 2 Inquire, I pray thee, of Jehovah for us; for Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon maketh war against us; if so be that Jehovah will deal with us according to all his marvellous works, that he may go up from us. 3 And Jeremiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to Zedekiah: 4 Thus saith Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel: Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, with which ye fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans who besiege you, outside the walls, and I will assemble them into the midst of this city. 5 And I myself will fight against you with a stretched-out hand, and with a strong arm, and in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath. 6 And I will smite the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast: they shall die of a great pestilence. 7 And afterwards, saith Jehovah, I will give Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, and such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those that seek their life, and he shall smite them with the edge of the sword: he shall not spare them, neither have pity, nor have mercy.

8 And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death. 9 He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he that goeth out, and deserteth to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey. 10 For I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good, saith Jehovah: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire. 11 And touching the house of the king of Judah, hear ye the word of Jehovah. 12 House of David, thus saith Jehovah: Judge with justice in the morning, and deliver him that is spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my fury go forth like fire and burn, and there be none to quench it, because of the evil of your doings. 13 Behold, I am against thee, inhabitress of the valley, the rock of the plain, saith Jehovah; ye that say, Who shall come down against us, or who shall enter into our dwellings? 14 And I will visit you according to the fruit of your doings, saith Jehovah; and I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it shall devour all that is round about her.

1 Cuvântul spus lui Ieremia din partea Domnului, când i-a trimis împăratul Zedechia pe Pașhur*Cap. 38:1., fiul lui Malchia, și pe Țefania*2 Împ. 25:18. Cap. 29:25; 37:3., fiul lui Maaseia, preotul, ca să-i zică: 2 „Întreabă pe Domnul*Cap. 37:3,7. pentru noi, căci Nebucadnețar, împăratul Babilonului, este în război cu noi! Poate că Domnul va face pentru noi vreuna din minunile Lui, ca să-l depărteze de la noi." 3 Ieremia le-a răspuns: „Să spuneți lui Zedechia: 4 ‘Așa vorbește Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Iată, voi întoarce armele de război care sunt în mâinile voastre și cu care vă luptați în afară de ziduri, împotriva împăratului Babilonului și împotriva haldeenilor care vă împresoară și le voi strânge*Is. 13:4. în mijlocul cetății acesteia. 5 Apoi Eu Însumi voi lupta împotriva voastră, cu mâna întinsă*Exod 6:6. și cu braț tare, cu mânie, urgie și mare supărare. 6 Voi lovi pe locuitorii cetății acesteia, atât oameni, cât și dobitoace, și vor muri de o ciumă grozavă. 7 După aceea», zice Domnul, «voi*Cap. 37:17;39:5;52:9. da pe Zedechia, împăratul lui Iuda, pe slujitorii lui, pe popor și pe cei ce vor scăpa în cetatea aceasta de ciumă, de sabie și de foamete, îi voi da în mâinile lui Nebucadnețar, împăratul Babilonului, în mâinile vrăjmașilor lor, în mâinile celor ce vor să le ia viața, și Nebucadnețar îi va trece prin ascuțișul sabiei, nu-i va cruța*Deut. 28:50.2 Cron. 36:17., nu va avea nicio milă de ei și nu se va îndura de ei.»’ 8 Iar poporului acestuia să-i spui: ‘Așa vorbește Domnul: «Iată că vă pun*Deut. 30:19. înainte calea vieții și calea morții. 9 Cine va*Cap. 38:2,17,18. rămâne în cetatea aceasta va muri ucis de sabie, de foamete sau de ciumă, dar cine va ieși să se ducă la haldeenii care vă împresoară va scăpa cu viață, care va fi singura*Cap. 39:18;45:5. lui pradă. 10 Căci Eu Îmi îndrept privirile*Lev. 17:10. Cap. 44:11.Amos 9:4. împotriva cetății acesteia ca să-i fac rău, nu bine», zice Domnul; «ea va fi dată în mâinile*Cap. 38:3. împăratului Babilonului, care o va arde*Cap. 34:2,22;37:10;38:18,23;52:13. cu foc.»’ 11 Și să spui casei împăratului lui Iuda: ‘Ascultați Cuvântul Domnului, 12 casă a lui David! Așa vorbește Domnul: «Faceți dreptate*Cap. 22:3.Zah. 7:9. dis-de-dimineață*Ps. 101:8. și scoateți pe cel asuprit din mâinile asupritorului, ca să nu izbucnească mânia Mea ca un foc și să se aprindă, fără să se poată stinge, din pricina răutății faptelor voastre! 13 Iată, am necaz pe*Ezec. 13:8. tine, cetate așezată în vale, pe stânca din câmpie», zice Domnul, «pe voi, care ziceți: ‹Cine*Cap. 49:4. se va coborî împotriva noastră? Cine va intra în locuințele noastre?› 14 Vă voi pedepsi după rodul*Prov. 1:31.Is. 3:10,11. faptelor voastre», zice Domnul; «voi pune foc pădurii voastre și va mânca toate*2 Cron. 36:19. Cap. 52:13. împrejurimile.»’"
