1 The word that came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and all his army, and all the kingdoms of the earth under his dominion, and all the peoples, fought against Jerusalem and against all the cities thereof, saying, 2 Thus saith Jehovah, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel: Go and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah, and tell him, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire. 3 And thou shalt not escape out of his hand, but shalt certainly be taken, and given into his hand; and thine eyes shall behold the eyes of the king of Babylon, and his mouth shall speak with thy mouth, and thou shalt go to Babylon. 4 Only, hear the word of Jehovah, O Zedekiah king of Judah. Thus saith Jehovah as to thee: Thou shalt not die by the sword; 5 thou shalt die in peace, and with the burnings of thy fathers, the former kings that were before thee, so shall they burn for thee; and they will lament for thee, Ah, lord! for I have spoken the word, saith Jehovah. 6 And the prophet Jeremiah spoke all these words unto Zedekiah king of Judah, in Jerusalem. 7 And the king of Babylon’s army fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish, and against Azekah; for these were amongst the cities of Judah, the fenced cities that were left.

8 The word that came unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, after that king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people that were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty unto them: 9 that every man should let his bondman, and every man his bondmaid, the Hebrew and the Hebrewess, go free, that none should exact service of them, that is, of a Jew his brother. 10 And all the princes and all the people that had entered into the covenant obeyed, every man letting his bondman and every man his bondmaid go free, that none should exact service of them any more: they obeyed, and let them go. 11 But afterwards they turned, and caused the bondmen and the bondmaids whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for bondmen and for bondmaids. 12 And the word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying, 13 Thus saith Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel: I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying, 14 At the end of seven years ye shall let go every man his brother, a Hebrew, who hath sold himself unto thee; when he hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee. But your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear. 15 And you, ye had this day turned, and had done right in my sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name: 16 but ye have turned and profaned my name, and caused every man his bondman, and every man his bondmaid, whom ye had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and ye have brought them into subjection, to be unto you for bondmen and for bondmaids. 17 Therefore thus saith Jehovah: Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every man to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith Jehovah, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will give you over to be driven hither and thither among all the kingdoms of the earth. 18 And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, who have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before me, — the calf which they cut in twain, and passed between the parts thereof, 19 — the princes of Judah and the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land, that passed between the parts of the calf; 20 them will I give into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of them that seek their life; and their carcases shall be food for the fowl of the heavens and for the beasts of the earth. 21 And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which are gone up from you. 22 Behold, I command, saith Jehovah, and I will cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire; and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.

Nebucadnețar, împăratul Babilonului, cu toată oștirea sa și toate împărățiile*Cap. 1:15. pământului de sub stăpânirea lui și toate popoarele făceau război împotriva Ierusalimului și împotriva tuturor cetăților care țineau de el: 2 „Așa vorbește Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel: ‘Du-te de spune lui Zedechia, împăratul lui Iuda, și zi-i: «Așa vorbește Domnul: ‹Iată*Cap. 21:10;32:3,28., dau cetatea aceasta în mâinile împăratului Babilonului și o va*Cap. 32:29. Vers. 22. arde cu foc. 3 Și tu*Cap. 32:4. nu vei scăpa din mâinile lui, ci vei fi luat și dat în mâna lui, vei da ochi cu împăratul Babilonului, el îți va vorbi gură către gură și vei merge la Babilon.›»’ 4 Numai, ascultă Cuvântul Domnului, Zedechia, împăratul lui Iuda! Așa vorbește Domnul despre tine: ‘Nu vei muri ucis de sabie, 5 ci vei muri în pace și, cum au ars miresme*2 Cron. 16:14;21:19. pentru părinții tăi, vechii împărați, care au fost înaintea ta, tot așa vor arde*Dan. 2:46. și pentru tine și te vor*Cap. 22:18. jeli, zicând: «Vai, doamne!» Căci Eu am rostit cuvântul acesta’, zice Domnul." 6 Prorocul Ieremia a spus toate aceste cuvinte lui Zedechia, împăratul lui Iuda, la Ierusalim, 7 pe când oastea împăratului Babilonului lupta împotriva Ierusalimului și împotriva tuturor celorlalte cetăți ale lui Iuda, împotriva Lachisului și Azechei, căci acestea erau cetățile*2 Împ. 18:13;19:8.2 Cron. 11:5,9. care mai rămăseseră din toate cetățile întărite ale lui Iuda.

8 Iată cuvântul spus lui Ieremia din partea Domnului, după ce împăratul Zedechia făcuse o învoială cu tot poporul Ierusalimului ca să vestească slobozenia*Exod 21:2.Lev. 25:10. Vers. 14. robilor, 9 pentru ca*Neem. 5:11. fiecare să lase slobozi pe robul și roaba sa, pe evreu și pe evreică, și nimeni*Lev. 25:39-46. să nu mai țină în robie pe fratele său iudeu. 10 Toate căpeteniile și tot poporul care făcuseră învoiala s-au legat să lase slobozi fiecare pe robul și roaba lui și să nu-i mai țină în robie. Ei au ascultat și le-au dat drumul. 11 Dar, mai pe urmă*Vers. 21. Cap. 37:5., s-au răzgândit, au luat înapoi pe robii și roabele pe care-i sloboziseră și i-au silit să le fie iarăși robi și roabe. 12 Atunci, Cuvântul Domnului a vorbit lui Ieremia din partea Domnului astfel: 13 „Așa vorbește Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel: ‘Eu am făcut un legământ cu părinții voștri în ziua când i-am scos din țara Egiptului, din casa robiei și le-am zis: 14 «După șapte*Exod 21:2;23:10.Deut. 15:12. ani, fiecare din voi să lase slobod pe fratele său evreu care i se vinde lui; șase ani să-ți slujească și apoi să-l lași slobod de la tine.» Dar părinții voștri nu M-au ascultat și n-au luat aminte la Mine. 15 Voi v-ați întors astăzi în voi înșivă, ați făcut ce este bine înaintea Mea, vestind fiecare slobozenia pentru aproapele său, și ați făcut o învoială*2 Împ. 23:3.Neem. 10:29. înaintea Mea, în Casa*Cap. 7:10. peste care este chemat Numele Meu. 16 Dar pe urmă v-ați luat vorba îndărăt și Mi-ați pângărit*Exod 20:7.Lev. 19:12. Numele, luând iarăși înapoi fiecare pe robii și roabele pe care-i sloboziserăți și-i lăsaserăți în voia lor, și i-ați silit să vă fie iarăși robi și roabe.’ 17 De aceea așa vorbește Domnul: ‘Nu M-ați ascultat ca să vestiți slobozenia*Mat. 7:2.Gal. 6:7.Iac. 2:13. fiecare pentru fratele său, fiecare pentru aproapele său. Iată, Eu vestesc împotriva voastră’, zice Domnul, ‘slobozenia sabiei*Cap. 32:24,36., ciumei și foametei și vă voi face de pomină printre toate împărățiile*Deut. 28:25,64. Cap. 29:18. pământului. 18 Și pe oamenii care au călcat legământul Meu, care n-au păzit îndatoririle învoielii pe care o făcuseră înaintea Mea, tăind*Gen. 15:10,17. un vițel în două și trecând printre cele două jumătăți ale lui, 19 și anume pe căpeteniile lui Iuda și pe căpeteniile Ierusalimului, pe famenii dregători, pe preoți și pe tot poporul țării, care au trecut printre bucățile vițelului, 20 îi voi da în mâinile vrăjmașilor lor, în mâinile celor ce vor să le ia viața, și trupurile lor moarte*Cap. 7:33;16:4;19:7. vor sluji ca hrană păsărilor cerului și fiarelor câmpului. 21 Dar pe Zedechia, împăratul lui Iuda, și pe căpeteniile lui, îi voi da în mâinile vrăjmașilor lor, în mâinile celor ce vor să le ia viața, în mâinile oștirii împăratului Babilonului, care*Cap. 37:5,11. a plecat de la voi! 22 Iată*Cap. 37:8,10., voi da poruncă’, zice Domnul, ‘și-i voi aduce înapoi împotriva cetății acesteia; o vor*Cap. 38:3;39:1,2,8;52:7,13. bate, o vor lua și o vor arde cu foc. Și voi preface*Cap. 9:11;44:2,6. cetățile lui Iuda într-un pustiu fără locuitori.’"
