1 And Job continued his parable and said, 2 Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when +God*GodHebrew: Eloah preserved me; 3 When his lamp shone over my head, and by his light I walked through darkness; 4 As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret counsel of +God*GodHebrew: Eloah was over my tent, 5 When the Almighty was yet with me, my young men round about me; 6 When my steps were bathed in milk, and the rock poured out beside me rivers of oil! ...

7 When I went out to the gate by the city, when I prepared my seat on the broadway, 8 The young men saw me, and hid themselves; and the aged arose and stood up; 9 Princes refrained from talking, and laid the hand on their mouth; 10 The voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue cleaved to their palate. 11 When the ear heard me, then it blessed me, and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me; 12 For I delivered the afflicted that cried, and the fatherless who had no helper. 13 The blessing of him that was perishing came upon me, and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. 14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was as a mantle and a turban. 15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame; 16 I was a father to the needy, and the cause which I knew not I searched out; 17 And I broke the jaws of the unrighteous, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.

18 And I said, I shall die in my nest, and multiply my days as the sand; 19 My root shall be spread out to the waters, and the dew will lie all night on my branch; 20 My glory shall be fresh in me, and my bow be renewed in my hand. 21 Unto me they listened, and waited, and kept silence for my counsel: 22 After my words they spoke not again, and my speech dropped upon them; 23 And they waited for me as for the rain, and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain. 24 If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and they troubled not the serenity of my countenance. 25 I chose their way, and sat as chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth mourners.

2 „O, cum nu pot să fiu ca*Cap. 7:3. în lunile trecute,

ca în zilele când mă păzea Dumnezeu,

3 când*Cap. 18:6. candela Lui strălucea deasupra capului meu

și lumina Lui mă călăuzea în întuneric!

4 Cum nu sunt ca în zilele puterii mele,

când Dumnezeu veghea ca un prieten*Ps. 25:14. peste cortul meu,

5 când Cel Atotputernic încă era cu mine

și când copiii mei stăteau în jurul meu;

6 când mi se scăldau pașii*Gen. 49:11.Deut. 32:13;33:24. în smântână

și stânca*Cap. 20:17.Ps. 81:16. vărsa lângă mine pâraie de untdelemn!

7 Dacă ieșeam să mă duc la poarta cetății

și dacă îmi pregăteam un scaun în piață,

8 tinerii se trăgeau înapoi la apropierea mea,

bătrânii se sculau și stăteau în picioare.

9 Mai-marii își opreau cuvântările

și își puneau*Cap. 21:5. mâna la gură.

10 Glasul căpeteniilor tăcea

și li se lipea limba*Ps. 137:6. de cerul gurii.

11 Urechea care mă auzea mă numea fericit,

ochiul care mă vedea mă lăuda.

12 Căci scăpam*Ps. 72:12.Prov. 21:13;24:11. pe săracul care cerea ajutor

și pe orfanul lipsit de sprijin.

13 Binecuvântarea nenorocitului venea peste mine,

umpleam de bucurie inima văduvei.

14 Mă îmbrăcam cu dreptatea*Deut. 24:13.Ps. 132:9.Is. 59:17;61:10.Efes. 6:14.1 Tes. 5:8. și-i slujeam de îmbrăcăminte,

neprihănirea îmi era manta și turban.

15 Orbului*Num. 10:31. îi eram ochi

și șchiopului, picior.

16 Celor nenorociți le eram tată

și cercetam pricina*Prov. 29:7. celui necunoscut.

17 Rupeam falca*Ps. 58:6.Prov. 30:14. celui nedrept

și-i smulgeam prada din dinți.

18 Atunci ziceam: ‘În cuibul*Ps. 30:6. meu voi muri,

zilele mele vor fi multe ca nisipul.

19 Apa*Ps. 1:3.Ier. 17:8. Cap. 18:16. va pătrunde în rădăcinile mele,

roua va sta toată noaptea peste ramurile mele.

20 Slava mea va înverzi neîncetat

și arcul*Gen. 49:24. îmi va întineri în mână.’

21 Oamenii mă ascultau și așteptau,

tăceau înaintea sfaturilor mele.

22 După cuvântările mele, niciunul nu răspundea

și cuvântul meu era pentru toți o rouă binefăcătoare.

23 Mă așteptau ca pe ploaie,

căscau gura ca după ploaia*Zah. 10:1. de primăvară.

24 Când li se înmuia inima, le zâmbeam

și nu puteau izgoni seninătatea de pe fruntea mea.

25 Îmi plăcea să mă duc la ei și mă așezam în fruntea lor;

eram ca un împărat în mijlocul unei oștiri,

ca un mângâietor lângă niște întristați.
