9 If my heart have been enticed unto a woman, so that I laid wait at my neighbour’s door, 10 Let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down upon her. 11 For this is an infamy; yea, it is an iniquity to be judged by the judges: 12 For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase. 13 If I have despised the cause of my bondman or of my bondmaid, when they contended with me, 14 What then should I do when ·God*GodHebrew: El riseth up? and if he visited, what should I answer him? 15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not One fashion us in the womb?

16 If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or caused the eyes of the widow to fail; 17 Or have eaten my morsel alone, so that the fatherless ate not thereof, 18 (For from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, and I have guided the widow from my mother’s womb;) 19 If I have seen any perishing for want of clothing, or any needy without covering; 20 If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my lambs; 21 If I have lifted up my hand against an orphan, because I saw my help in the gate: 22 Then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone! 23 For calamity from ·God*GodHebrew: El was a terror to me, and by reason of his excellency I was powerless.

24 If I have made gold my hope, or said to the fine gold, My confidence! 25 If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much; 26 If I beheld the sun when it shone, or the moon walking in brightness, 27 And my heart have been secretly enticed, so that my mouth kissed my hand: 28 This also would be an iniquity for the judge, for I should have denied the ·God*GodHebrew: El who is above. 29 If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, and exulted when evil befell him; 30 (Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse;) 31 If the men of my tent said not, Who shall find one that hath not been satisfied with his meat? — 32 The stranger did not lodge without; I opened my doors to the pathway.

33 If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom, 34 Because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and went not out of the door, ... 35 Oh that I had one to hear me! Behold my signature: let the Almighty answer me! And let mine opponent write an accusation! 36 Would I not take it upon my shoulder? I would bind it on to me as a crown; 37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I come near to him. 38 If my land cry out against me, and its furrows weep together; 39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, and have tormented to death the souls of its owners: 40 Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and tares instead of barley. Nu mi-a numărat El toți pașii mei?

5 Dacă am umblat cu minciuna,

dacă mi-a alergat piciorul după înșelăciune,

6 să mă cântărească Dumnezeu în cumpăna celor fără prihană,

și-mi va vedea neprihănirea!

7 De mi s-a abătut pasul de pe calea cea dreaptă,

de mi-a urmat inima*Num. 15:39.Ecl. 11:9.Ezec. 6:9.Mat. 5:29. ochii,

de s-a lipit vreo întinăciune de mâinile mele,

8 atunci eu*Lev. 26:16.Deut. 28:30,38. să semăn, și altul să secere

și odraslele mele să fie dezrădăcinate!

9 Dacă mi-a fost amăgită inima de vreo femeie,

dacă am pândit la ușa aproapelui meu,

10 atunci nevastă-mea să macine pentru altul*2 Sam. 12:11.Ier. 8:10.

și s-o necinstească alții!

11 Căci aceasta ar fi fost o nelegiuire,

o fărădelege*Gen. 38:24.Lev. 20:10.Deut. 22:22. Vers. 28. vrednică să fie pedepsită de judecători,

12 un foc care mistuie până la nimicire

și care mi-ar fi prăpădit toată bogăția.

13 De aș fi nesocotit dreptul slugii sau slujnicei mele

când se certa cu mine,

14 ce aș putea să fac când Se ridică*Ps. 44:21. Dumnezeu?

Ce aș putea răspunde când pedepsește El?

15 Cel ce m-a făcut pe mine în pântecele mamei mele nu l-a făcut*Cap. 34:19.Prov. 14:31;22:2.Mal. 2:10. și pe el?

Oare nu ne-a întocmit același Dumnezeu în pântecele mamei?

16 Dacă n-am dat săracilor ce-mi cereau,

dacă am făcut să se topească de plâns ochii văduvei,

17 dacă mi-am mâncat singur pâinea,

fără ca orfanul să fi avut și el partea lui din ea,

18 eu, care din tinerețe l-am crescut ca un tată,

eu, care de la naștere am sprijinit pe văduvă;

19 dacă am văzut pe cel nenorocit ducând lipsă de haine,

pe cel lipsit neavând învelitoare,

20 fără ca inima lui să mă fi binecuvântat*Deut. 24:13.,

fără să fi fost încălzit de lâna mieilor mei;

21 dacă am ridicat mâna împotriva orfanului*Cap. 22:9.,

pentru că mă simțeam sprijinit de judecători,

22 atunci să mi se dezlipească umărul de la încheietură,

să-mi cadă brațul și să se sfărâme!

23 Căci mă temeam*Is. 13:6.Ioel 1:15. de pedeapsa lui Dumnezeu

și nu puteam lucra astfel din pricina măreției Lui.

24 Dacă mi-am pus*Marcu 10:24.1 Tim. 6:17. încrederea în aur,

dacă am zis aurului: ‘Tu ești nădejdea mea’,

25 dacă m-am îngâmfat*Ps. 62:10.Prov. 11:28. de mărimea averilor mele,

de mulțimea bogățiilor pe care le dobândisem,

26 dacă am privit*Deut. 4:19;11:16;17:3.Ezec. 8:16. soarele când strălucea,

luna când înainta măreață

27 și dacă mi s-a lăsat amăgită inima în taină,

dacă le-am aruncat sărutări*31:27 Sărutări, în semn de închinare., ducându-mi mâna la gură –

28 și aceasta este tot o fărădelege*Vers. 11. care trebuie pedepsită de judecători,

căci m-aș fi lepădat de Dumnezeul cel de sus –,

29 dacă m-am bucurat de nenorocirea*Prov. 17:5. vrăjmașului meu,

dacă am sărit de bucurie când l-a atins nenorocirea,

30 eu, care n-am dat voie*Mat. 5:44.Rom. 12:14. limbii mele să păcătuiască,

să-i ceară moartea cu blestem,

31 dacă nu ziceau oamenii din cortul meu:

‘Unde este cel ce nu s-a săturat din carnea lui?’,

32 dacă petrecea străinul*Gen. 19:2,3.Jud. 19:20,21.Rom. 12:13.Evr. 13:2.1 Pet. 4:9. noaptea afară,

dacă nu mi-aș fi deschis ușa să intre călătorul,

33 dacă mi-am ascuns fărădelegile, ca*Gen. 3:8,12.Prov. 28:13.Osea 6:7. oamenii*31:33 Sau: ca Adam.,

și mi-am închis nelegiuirile în sân,

34 pentru că mă temeam de mulțime*Exod 23:2.,

pentru că mă temeam de disprețul

familiilor, ținându-mă deoparte și necutezând să-mi trec pragul…

35 O, de aș găsi pe cineva să*Cap. 33:6. m-asculte!

Iată apărarea mea, iscălită de mine: să-mi răspundă Cel*Cap. 13:22. Atotputernic!

Cine-mi va da plângerea iscălită de potrivnicul meu?

36 Ca să-i port scrisoarea pe umăr,

s-o leg de fruntea mea ca o cunună;

37 să-i dau socoteală de toți pașii mei,

să mă apropii de el ca un domn.

38 Dacă pământul meu strigă împotriva mea

și dacă brazdele lui varsă lacrimi;

39 dacă i-am mâncat*Iac. 5:4. rodul fără să-l fi plătit

și dacă am*1 Împ. 21:19. întristat sufletul vechilor lui stăpâni,

40 atunci să crească spini*Gen. 3:18. din el în loc de grâu

și neghină în loc de orz!"
