1 And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, 2 Can a man be profitable to ·God*GodHebrew: El surely it is unto himself that the wise man is profitable. 3 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if thou art righteous? And is it gain to him that thou makest thy ways perfect? 4 Will he reason with thee for fear of thee? Will he enter with thee into judgment?

5 Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities without end? 6 For thou hast taken a pledge of thy brother for nought, and stripped off the clothing of the naked. 7 Thou hast not given water to the fainting to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry. 8 But the powerful man, he had the land; and the man of high rank dwelt in it. 9 Widows hast thou sent empty away, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken. 10 Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee; 11 Or darkness, that thou canst not see, and floods of waters cover thee. 12 Is not +God*GodHebrew: Eloah in the height of the heavens? And behold the summit of the stars: how exalted are they! 13 And thou sayest, What doth ·God*GodHebrew: El know? will he judge through the dark cloud? 14 Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh on the vault of the heavens.

15 Dost thou mark the ancient path which wicked men have trodden? 16 Who were carried off before the time, whose foundation was overflowed with a flood; 17 Who said unto ·God*GodHebrew: El Depart from us! and what could the Almighty do to them? 18 Yet he filled their houses with good. But the counsel of the wicked is far from me. 19 The righteous see it, and are glad; and the innocent laugh them to scorn: 20 Is not he who rose against us destroyed, and doth not the fire consume his residue?

21 Reconcile thyself now with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee. 22 Receive, I pray thee, instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in thy heart. 23 If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up. If thou remove unrighteousness far from thy tents, 24 And put the precious ore with the dust, and the gold of Ophir among the stones of the torrents, 25 Then the Almighty will be thy precious ore, and silver heaped up unto thee; 26 Yea, then shalt thou delight thyself in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto +God*GodHebrew: Eloah27 Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he will hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows; 28 And thou shalt decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; and light shall shine upon thy ways. 29 When they are made low, then thou shalt say, Rise up! and he shall save him that is of downcast eyes. 30 Even him that is not innocent shall he deliver; yea, he shall be delivered by the pureness of thy hands.

Nu, ci înțeleptul nu-și folosește decât lui.

3 Dacă ești fără prihană, are Cel Atotputernic vreun folos?

Și dacă trăiești fără vină, ce va câștiga El?

4 Pentru evlavia ta te pedepsește El oare

și intră la judecată cu tine?

5 Nu-i mare răutatea ta?

Și fărădelegile tale, fără număr?

6 Luai*Exod 22:26,27.Deut. 24:10. Cap. 24:3,9.Ezec. 18:12. fără pricină zăloage de la frații tăi,

lăsai fără haine pe cei goi.

7 Nu dădeai apă omului însetat,

nu voiai*Cap. 31:17.Deut. 15:7.Is. 58:7.Ezec. 18:7,16.Mat. 25:42. să dai pâine omului flămând.

8 Țara era a ta fiindcă erai mai tare,

te așezai în ea fiindcă erai cu vază.

9 Dădeai afară pe văduve cu mâinile goale

și brațele*Cap. 31:21.Is. 10:2.Ezec. 22:7. orfanilor le frângeai.

10 Pentru aceea ești înconjurat*Cap. 18:8-10;19:6. de curse

și te-a apucat groaza dintr-odată.

11 Nu vezi dar acest întuneric,

aceste ape multe care te*Ps. 69:1,2;124:4.Plâng. 3:54. năpădesc?

12 Nu este Dumnezeu sus în ceruri?

Privește vârful stelelor. Ce înalt este!

13 Și tu zici: ‘Ce știe*Ps. 10:11;59:7;73:11;94:7. Dumnezeu?

Poate să judece El prin întunericul de nori?

14 Îl înfășoară norii*Ps. 139:11,12., nu vede nimic,

bolta cerească abia dacă o străbate!’

15 Ce, vrei s-apuci pe calea străveche,

pe care au urmat-o cei nelegiuiți,

16 care*Cap. 15:32.Ps. 55:23;102:24.Ecl. 7:17. au fost luați înainte de vreme

și au ținut cât ține un pârâu care se scurge?

17 Ei*Cap. 21:14. ziceau lui Dumnezeu: ‘Pleacă de la noi!

Ce ne*Ps. 4:6. poate face Cel Atotputernic?’

18 Și totuși Dumnezeu le umpluse casele de bunătăți.

– Departe*Cap. 21:16. de mine sfatul celor răi! –

19 Cei fără prihană*Ps. 58:10;107:42. vor fi martori ai căderii lor și se vor bucura,

cel nevinovat va râde de ei

20 și va zice: ‘Iată pe potrivnicii noștri nimiciți!

Iată-le bogățiile arse de foc!’

21 Împrietenește-te dar cu Dumnezeu, și vei*Is. 27:5. avea pace;

te vei bucura astfel iarăși de fericire.

22 Primește învățătură din gura Lui

și pune-ți*Ps. 119:11. la inimă cuvintele Lui.

23 Vei fi așezat iarăși la locul tău dacă te*Cap. 8:5,6;11:13,14. vei întoarce la Cel Atotputernic,

dacă depărtezi fărădelegea din cortul tău.

24 Aruncă*2 Cron. 1:15. dar aurul în țărână,

aruncă aurul din Ofir în prundul pâraielor!

25 Și atunci, Cel Atotputernic va fi aurul tău,

argintul tău, bogăția ta.

26 Atunci, Cel Atotputernic va fi desfătarea ta*Cap. 27:10.Is. 58:14.,

și îți vei ridica*Cap. 11:15. fața spre Dumnezeu.

27 Îl vei*Ps. 50:14,15.Is. 58:9. ruga, și te va asculta

și îți vei putea împlini juruințele.

28 Pe ce vei pune mâna îți va izbuti,

pe cărările tale va străluci lumina.

29 Vină smerirea, tu te vei ruga pentru ridicarea ta:

Dumnezeu ajută pe cel*Prov. 29:23.Iac. 4:6.1 Pet. 5:5. cu ochii plecați.

30 El va izbăvi chiar și pe cel vinovat,

care își va datora scăparea curăției mâinilor tale."
