1 And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2 Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind,
3 Reasoning with unprofitable talk, and with speeches which do no good?
4 Yea, thou makest piety of none effect, and restrainest meditation before *God.
5 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.
6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; and thy lips testify against thee.
7 Art thou the first man that was born? and wast thou brought forth before the hills?
8 Hast thou listened in the secret council of +God? And hast thou absorbed wisdom for thyself?
9 What knowest thou that we know not? {what} understandest thou which is not in us?
10 Both the greyheaded and the aged are with us, older than thy father.
11 Are the consolations of *God too small for thee? and the word gently spoken to thee?
12 Why doth thy heart carry thee away? and why do thine eyes wink?
13 That thou turnest thy spirit against *God, and lettest words go out of thy mouth?
14 What is man, that he should be pure? and he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight:
16 How much less the abominable and corrupt, -man, that drinketh unrighteousness like water!
17 I will shew thee, listen to me; and what I have seen I will declare;
18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hidden;
19 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
20 All his days the wicked man is tormented, and numbered years are allotted to the violent.
21 The sound of terrors is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer cometh upon him.
22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is singled out for the sword.
23 He wandereth abroad for bread, -where may it be? He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24 Distress and anguish make him afraid; they prevail against him, as a king ready for the battle.
25 For he hath stretched out his hand against *God, and strengthened himself against the Almighty:
26 He runneth against him, with {outstretched} neck, with the thick bosses of his bucklers;
27 For he hath covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat upon {his} flanks.
28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, in houses that no man inhabiteth, which are destined to become heaps.
29 He shall not become rich, neither shall his substance continue, and their possessions shall not extend upon the earth.
30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches; and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
31 Let him not trust in vanity: he is deceived, for vanity shall be his recompense;
32 It shall be complete before his day, and his branch shall not be green.
33 He shall shake off his unripe grapes as a vine, and shall cast his flower as an olive.
34 For the family of the ungodly shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.
35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
1 Elifaz din Teman a luat cuvîntul, şi a zis:
2 ,,Se cade să dea înţeleptul ca răspuns înţelepciune deşartă? Sau să-şi umfle pieptul cu vînt de răsărit?
3 Să se apere prin cuvinte cari n'ajută la nimic, şi prin cuvîntări cari nu slujesc la nimic?
4 Tu nimiceşti chiar şi frica de Dumnezeu, nimiceşti orice simţire de evlavie faţă de Dumnezeu.
5 Nelegiuirea ta îţi cîrmuieşte gura, şi împrumuţi vorbirea oamenilor vicleni.
6 Nu eu, ci gura ta te osîndeşte, buzele tale mărturisesc împotriva ta.
7 Tu eşti omul care s'a născut întîi? Te-ai născut tu înaintea dealurilor?
8 Ai fost tu la sfaturile lui Dumnezeu; şi ai sorbit din ele înţelepciune pentru tine?
9 Ce ştii tu şi să nu ştim şi noi? Ce cunoştinţă ai tu pe care să n'o avem şi noi?
10 Între noi sînt peri albi, bătrîni, oameni mai înziliţi decît tatăl tău.
11 Puţin lucru sînt mîngîierile lui Dumnezeu pentru tine, şi cuvintele cari-ţi vorbesc atît de blînd?...
12 Încotro te trage inima, şi ce înseamnă această privire ţintă a ochilor tăi?
13 Ce! împotriva lui Dumnezeu îţi îndrepţi tu mînia, şi-ţi ies din gură cuvinte ca acestea?
14 ,Ce este omul, ca să fie curat? Şi poate cel născut din femeie să fie fără prihană?
15 Dacă n'are încredere Dumnezeu nici în sfinţii Săi, dacă nici cerurile nu sînt curate înaintea Lui,
16 cu cît mai puţin fiinţa urîcioasă şi stricată-omul, care bea nelegiuirea ca apa!
17 Vreau să te învăţ, ascultă-mă! Voi istorisi ce am văzut,
18 ce au arătat înţelepţii, ce au descoperit ei, auzind dela părinţii lor,
19 cărora singuri li se dăduse ţara, şi printre cari nici un străin nu venise încă.
20 ,Omul cel rău îşi duce în nelinişte toate zilele vieţii, toţi anii de cari are parte cel nelegiuit.
21 Ţipete de spaimă răsună la urechile lui: În mijlocul fericirii lui, pustiitorul se va arunca asupra lui.
22 El nu trage nădejde să scape de întunerec, vede sabia care -l ameninţă;
23 aleargă încoace şi încolo să caute pîne, ştie că -l aşteaptă ziua întunerecului.
24 Necazul şi neliniştea îl înspăimîntă, şi se aruncă asupra lui ca un împărat gata de luptă.
25 Căci a ridicat mîna împotriva lui Dumnezeu, s'a împotrivit Celui Atot Puternic,
26 şi a avut îndrăzneala să se năpustească asupra Lui cu partea cea mai tare a scuturilor lui.
27 Avea faţa acoperită cu grăsime, coapsele încărcate cu osînză,
28 şi locuia în cetăţi nimicite, în case părăsite, sortite să fie dărîmate.
29 Nu se va mai îmbogăţi, averea nu -i va creşte, şi avuţia nu se va mai întinde pe pămînt.
30 Nu va putea ieşi din întunerec, flacăra îi va arde mlădiţele, şi Dumnezeu îl va pierde cu suflarea gurii Lui.
31 Dacă se încrede în rău, se înşeală, căci răul îi va fi răsplata.
32 Ea va veni înainte de capătul zilelor lui, şi ramura lui nu va mai înverzi.
33 Va fi ca o viţă despoiată de roadele ei încă verzi, ca un măslin ale cărui flori au căzut.
34 Căci casa celui nelegiuit va ajunge stearpă, şi cortul omului stricat îl va mînca focul.
35 El zămisleşte răul şi naşte răul: în sînul lui coace roade cari -l înşeală.```
