1 Ó Deus, nós ouvimos
com os nossos próprios ouvidos
aquilo que os nossos antepassados
nos contaram.
Ouvimos falar das grandes coisas
que fizeste no tempo deles,
há muitos anos.
2 Eles contaram como expulsaste
os povos pagãos
e puseste o teu povo na terra deles.
Contaram como castigaste
as outras nações
e fizeste o teu povo progredir.
3 Não foi com espadas
que os nossos antepassados
conquistaram aquela terra;
não foi com o seu próprio poder
que eles venceram.
Eles venceram com o teu poder,
com a tua força
e com a luz da tua presença.
Assim tu mostraste o teu amor
por eles.
4 Tu és o meu Rei e o meu Deus.
Tu dás a vitória ao teu povo.
5 Com o teu poder
vencemos os nossos inimigos
e, com a tua presença,
derrotamos os nossos adversários.
6 Não é no meu arco que eu confio,
e não é a minha espada
que me dá a vitória.
7 Pois foste tu que nos livraste
dos nossos inimigos
e venceste aqueles que nos odeiam.
8 Nós te louvaremos o dia todo;
nós te somos gratos para sempre.
9 Mas agora, ó Deus,
tu nos rejeitaste
e deixaste que fôssemos derrotados,
pois já não acompanhas
os nossos exércitos.
10 Tu nos fizeste fugir
dos nossos inimigos,
e eles levaram embora
tudo o que tínhamos.
11 Tu nos trataste como se fôssemos
ovelhas que vão para o matadouro
e nos espalhaste
entre as outras nações.
12 Vendeste barato o teu próprio povo,
como se nós tivéssemos pouco valor.
13 Os povos vizinhos,
vendo o que nos fizeste,
caçoam e zombam de nós.
14 Tu nos fizeste motivo de zombaria
para as outras nações;
os outros povos nos desprezam.
15 Estou sempre humilhado
e coberto de vergonha,
16 ouvindo as zombarias
dos meus inimigos
e os insultos dos que querem
se vingar de mim.
17 Tudo isso nos aconteceu,
embora não tivéssemos esquecido de ti,
nem tivéssemos quebrado a aliança
que fizeste com o teu povo.
18 Não fomos infiéis a ti,
nem desobedecemos
aos teus mandamentos.
19 Porém tu nos jogaste, esmagados,
no lugar onde estão
os monstros marinhos
e nos deixaste
na mais profunda escuridão.
20 Se tivéssemos deixado de adorar
o nosso Deus
e orado a algum deus pagão,
21 tu certamente ficarias sabendo disso,
pois conheces os pensamentos secretos
das pessoas.
22 Mas por causa de ti estamos
em perigo de morte o dia inteiro;
somos tratados como ovelhas
que vão para o matadouro.
23 Acorda, Senhor!
Por que estás dormindo?
Levanta-te.
Não nos rejeites para sempre.
24 Por que te escondes de nós?
Por que esqueces
dos nossos sofrimentos
e das nossas aflições?
25 Nós estamos abatidos,
caídos no chão;
estamos vencidos, jogados no pó.
26 Levanta-te e vem ajudar-nos.
Salva-nos por causa do teu amor.

1 +2 \44:1\To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil. We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.3 \44:2\How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and didst plant them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.4 \44:3\For they obtained not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thy arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favor to them.5 \44:4\Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.6 \44:5\Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name we will tread them under that rise up against us.7 \44:6\For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.8 \44:7\But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.9 \44:8\In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.10 \44:9\But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.11 \44:10\Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they who hate us plunder for themselves.12 \44:11\Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for food; and hast scattered us among the heathen.13 \44:12\Thou sellest thy people for naught, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price.14 \44:13\Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and a derision to them that are around us.15 \44:14\Thou makest us a by-word among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.16 \44:15\My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,17 \44:16\For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger.18 \44:17\All this is come upon us; yet we have not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.19 \44:18\Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;20 \44:19\Though thou hast severely broke us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shades of death.21 \44:20\If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;22 \44:21\Will not God search out this? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.23 \44:22\Yes, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.24 \44:23\Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.25 \44:24\Why hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?26 \44:25\For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth to the earth.27 \44:26\Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.
