Jesus citerade versen (Luk 4:18f) och förklarade att den fått sin uppfyllelse i honom som Messias, den smorde (jfr Apg 10:38 samt 1 Joh 2:20).

att förbinda dem som har

förkrossade hjärtan,

att utropa frihet för de fångna

från vår Gud,

att trösta alla sörjande,

en modfälld ande.

Och de ska kallas

"rättfärdighetens terebinter",

till hans förhärligande.

upprätta det som förr legat öde.

De ska bygga upp

ruinstäderna igen,

platser som varit öde

i generation efter generation.

5 *Jes 14:2, 60:10. Främlingar ska stå och valla

era hjordar,

utlänningar sköta

era åkrar och vingårdar.

6 *Jes 60:16, 66:21, Upp 1:6. Och ni ska heta "Herrens präster",

man ska kalla er:

"Vår Guds tjänare".

Ni ska få njuta av

hednafolkens skatter

och ståta med deras härlighet.

7 *Jes 35:10, 40:2, 51:11, Sak 9:12. Ni ska få dubbelt igen för er skam,

och de som förödmjukades

ska nu jubla över sin del.

Därför ska de få en dubbel lott

i sitt land,

evig glädje ska de få,

8 *Jes 54:10, 55:3, Hes 37:26. för jag, Herren, älskar det rätta

och hatar orättfärdigt rofferi.

Jag ska ge dem deras lön i trofasthet

och sluta ett evigt förbund

med dem.

9 Deras släkte ska vara känt

bland folken,

deras avkomma bland folkslagen.

Alla som ser dem ska förstå

att de är det släkte

som Herren har välsignat.

7 For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them. 8 For I the LORD love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. 9 And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the LORD hath blessed.
