1 Then Job answered and said,

2 Of a truth I know that it is so:

But how can man be just with God?

3 If he be pleased to contend with him,

He cannot answer him one of a thousand.

4 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength:

Who hath hardened himself against him, and prospered?—

5 Him that removeth the mountains, and they know it not,

When he overturneth them in his anger;

6 That shaketh the earth out of its place,

And the pillars thereof tremble;

7 That commandeth the sun, and it riseth not,

And sealeth up the stars;

8 That alone stretcheth out the heavens,

And treadeth upon the waves of the sea;

9 That maketh the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades,

And the chambers of the south;

10 That doeth great things past finding out,

Yea, marvellous things without number.

11 Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not:

He passeth on also, but I perceive him not.

12 Behold, he seizeth the prey, who can hinder him?

Who will say unto him, What doest thou?

13 God will not withdraw his anger;

The helpers of Rahab do stoop under him.

14 How much less shall I answer him,

And choose out my words to reason with him?

15 Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer;

I would make supplication to my judge.

16 If I had called, and he had answered me,

Yet would I not believe that he hearkened unto my voice.

17 For he breaketh me with a tempest,

And multiplieth my wounds without cause.

18 He will not suffer me to take my breath,

But filleth me with bitterness.

19 If we speak of strength, lo, he is mighty!

And if of justice, Who, saith he, will summon me?

20 Though I be righteous, mine own mouth shall condemn me:

Though I be perfect, it shall prove me perverse.

21 I am perfect; I regard not myself;

I despise my life.

22 It is all one; therefore I say,

He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.

23 If the scourge slay suddenly,

He will mock at the trial of the innocent.

24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked;

He covereth the faces of the judges thereof:

If it be not he, who then is it?

25 Now my days are swifter than a post:

They flee away, they see no good.

26 They are passed away as the swift ships;

As the eagle that swoopeth on the prey.

27 If I say, I will forget my complaint,

I will put off my sad countenance, and be of good cheer;

28 I am afraid of all my sorrows,

I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.

29 I shall be condemned;

Why then do I labor in vain?

30 If I wash myself with snow water,

And make my hands never so clean;

31 Yet wilt thou plunge me in the ditch,

And mine own clothes shall abhor me.

32 For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him,

That we should come together in judgment.

33 There is no umpire betwixt us,

That might lay his hand upon us both.

34 Let him take his rod away from me,

And let not his terror make me afraid:

35 Then would I speak, and not fear him;

For I am not so in myself.

Și cum ar putea omul să-și scoată*Ps. 143:2.Rom. 3:20. dreptate înaintea lui Dumnezeu?

3 Dacă ar voi să se certe cu El,

din o mie de lucruri n-ar putea să răspundă la unul singur.

4 Ale Lui*Cap. 36:5. sunt înțelepciunea și atotputernicia:

cine I s-ar putea împotrivi fără să fie pedepsit?

5 El mută deodată munții

și-i răstoarnă în mânia Sa.

6 Zguduie*Is. 2:19,21.Hag. 2:6,21.Evr. 12:26. pământul din temelia*Cap. 26:11. lui,

de i se clatină stâlpii.

7 Poruncește soarelui, și soarele nu mai răsare;

și ține stelele sub pecetea Lui.

8 Numai El*Gen. 1:6.Ps. 104:2,3. întinde cerurile

și umblă pe înălțimile mării.

9 El a făcut*Gen. 1:16. Cap. 38:31.Amos 5:8. Ursa-Mare, Luceafărul de seară și Ralițele

și stelele din ținuturile de miazăzi.

10 El face*Cap. 5:9.Ps. 71:15. lucruri mari și nepătrunse,

minuni fără număr.

11 Iată*Cap. 23:8,9;35:14., El trece pe lângă mine, și nu-L văd,

Se duce, și nu-L zăresc.

12 Dacă*Is. 45:9.Ier. 18:6.Rom. 9:20. apucă El, cine-L va opri?

Cine-I va zice: ‘Ce faci?’

13 Dumnezeu nu-Și întoarce mânia;

sub El se pleacă toți sprijinitorii mândriei*Cap. 26:12.Is. 30:7..

14 Și eu cum să-I răspund?

Ce cuvinte să aleg?

15 Chiar dacă aș*Cap. 10:15. avea dreptate, nu I-aș răspunde.

Nu pot decât să mă rog judecătorului.

16 Și chiar dacă m-ar asculta când Îl chem,

tot n-aș putea crede că mi-a ascultat glasul –

17 El, care mă izbește ca într-o furtună,

care îmi înmulțește fără pricină*Cap. 2:3;34:6. rănile,

18 care nu mă lasă să răsuflu,

mă satură de amărăciune.

19 Să alerg la putere? El este atotputernic.

La dreptate? Cine mă va apăra?

20 Oricâtă dreptate aș avea, gura mea mă va osândi

și oricât de nevinovat aș fi, El mă va arăta ca vinovat.

21 Nevinovat! Sunt, dar nu țin la viață, îmi disprețuiesc viața.

22 Ce-mi pasă la urma urmei?

Căci îndrăznesc s-o spun:

El nimicește pe cel nevinovat*Ecl. 9:2,3.Ezec. 21:3. ca și pe cel vinovat.

23 Și dacă biciul ar pricinui măcar îndată moartea…!

Dar El râde de încercările celui nevinovat.

24 Pământul este dat pe mâinile celui nelegiuit;

El acoperă*2 Sam. 15:30;19:4.Ier. 14:4. ochii judecătorilor – de nu El, apoi cine altul?

25 Zilele*Cap. 7:6,7. mele aleargă mai iuți decât un alergător;

fug fără să fi văzut fericirea;

26 trec ca și corăbiile cele iuți,

ca vulturul*Hab. 1:8. care se repede asupra prăzii.

27 Dacă*Cap. 7:13. zic: ‘Vreau să-mi uit suferințele,

să-mi las întristarea și să fiu voios’,

28 sunt îngrozit*Ps. 119:120. de toate durerile mele.

Știu că nu mă vei scoate nevinovat*Exod 20:7..

29 Și dacă voi fi judecat vinovat,

pentru ce să mă mai trudesc degeaba?

30 Chiar dacă*Ier. 2:22. m-aș spăla cu zăpadă,

chiar dacă mi-aș curăți mâinile cu leșie,

31 Tu tot m-ai cufunda în mocirlă,

de s-ar scârbi până și hainele de mine!

32 Căci El nu*Ecl. 6:10.Is. 45:9.Ier. 49:19.Rom. 9:20. este un om ca mine, ca să-I pot răspunde

și să mergem împreună la judecată.

33 Nici nu*Vers. 19.1 Sam. 2:25. este vreun mijlocitor între noi,

care să-și pună mâna peste noi amândoi.

34 Să-Și tragă*Cap. 13:20-22;33:7.Ps. 39:10. însă varga de deasupra mea

și să nu mă mai tulbure spaima Lui.

35 Atunci voi vorbi și nu mă voi teme de El.

Altfel, nu sunt stăpân pe mine.
