1 Howbeit, Job, I pray thee, hear my speech,

And hearken to all my words.

2 Behold now, I have opened my mouth;

My tongue hath spoken in my mouth.

3 My words shall utter the uprightness of my heart;

And that which my lips know they shall speak sincerely.

4 The Spirit of God hath made me,

And the breath of the Almighty giveth me life.

5 If thou canst, answer thou me;

Set thy words in order before me, stand forth.

6 Behold, I am toward God even as thou art:

I also am formed out of the clay.

7 Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid,

Neither shall my pressure be heavy upon thee.

8 Surely thou hast spoken in my hearing,

And I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,

9 I am clean, without transgression;

I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me:

10 Behold, he findeth occasions against me,

He counteth me for his enemy;

11 He putteth my feet in the stocks,

He marketh all my paths.

12 Behold, I will answer thee, in this thou art not just;

For God is greater than man.

13 Why dost thou strive against him,

For that he giveth not account of any of his matters?

14 For God speaketh once,

Yea twice, though man regardeth it not.

15 In a dream, in a vision of the night,

When deep sleep falleth upon men,

In slumberings upon the bed;

16 Then he openeth the ears of men,

And sealeth their instruction,

17 That he may withdraw man from his purpose,

And hide pride from man;

18 He keepeth back his soul from the pit,

And his life from perishing by the sword.

19 He is chastened also with pain upon his bed,

And with continual strife in his bones;

20 So that his life abhorreth bread,

And his soul dainty food.

21 His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen;

And his bones that were not seen stick out.

22 Yea, his soul draweth near unto the pit,

And his life to the destroyers.

23 If there be with him an angel,

An interpreter, one among a thousand,

To show unto man what is right for him;

24 Then God is gracious unto him, and saith,

Deliver him from going down to the pit,

I have found a ransom.

25 His flesh shall be fresher than a child’s;

He returneth to the days of his youth.

26 He prayeth unto God, and he is favorable unto him,

So that he seeth his face with joy:

And he restoreth unto man his righteousness.

27 He singeth before men, and saith,

I have sinned, and perverted that which was right,

And it profited me not:

28 He hath redeemed my soul from going into the pit,

And my life shall behold the light.

29 Lo, all these things doth God work,

Twice, yea thrice, with a man,

30 To bring back his soul from the pit,

That he may be enlightened with the light of the living.

31 Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me:

Hold thy peace, and I will speak.

32 If thou hast anything to say, answer me:

Speak, for I desire to justify thee.

33 If not, hearken thou unto me:

Hold thy peace, and I will teach thee wisdom.

1 Acum dar, Iov, ascultă cuvântările mele,

ia aminte la toate cuvintele mele!

2 Iată, deschid gura

și mi se mișcă limba în cerul gurii.

3 Cu curăție de inimă voi vorbi,

buzele mele vor spune adevărul curat:

4 Duhul*Gen. 2:7. lui Dumnezeu m-a făcut

și suflarea Celui Atotputernic îmi dă viață.

5 Dacă poți, răspunde-mi,

apără-ți pricina, fii gata!

6 Înaintea lui Dumnezeu eu sunt semenul*Cap. 9:34,35;13:20,21;31:35. tău

și eu, ca și tine, am fost făcut din noroi.

7 Astfel, frica de mine*Cap. 9:34;13:21. nu te va tulbura

și greutatea mea nu te va copleși.

8 Dar tu ai spus în auzul meu

și am auzit sunetul cuvintelor tale:

9 ‘Sunt curat*Cap. 9:17;10:7;11:4;16:17;23:10,11;27:5;29:14;31:1., sunt fără păcat,

sunt fără prihană, nu este fărădelege în mine.

10 Și Dumnezeu caută pricină de ură împotriva mea,

mă socotește*Cap. 13:24;16:9;19:11. vrăjmaș al Lui;

11 îmi pune*Cap. 13:27;14:16;31:4. picioarele în butuci,

îmi pândește toate mișcările.’

12 Îți voi răspunde că aici n-ai dreptate,

căci Dumnezeu este mai mare decât omul.

13 Vrei dar să te cerți*Is. 45:9. cu El

pentru că nu dă socoteală fiecăruia de faptele Lui?

14 Dumnezeu vorbește însă când într-un fel*Cap. 40:5.Ps. 62:11., când într-altul,

dar omul nu ia seama.

15 El vorbește prin vise*Num. 12:6. Cap. 4:13., prin vedenii de noapte,

când oamenii sunt cufundați într-un somn adânc, când dorm în patul lor.

16 Atunci, El le dă înștiințări*Cap. 36:10,15.

și le întipărește învățăturile Lui,

17 ca să abată pe om de la rău

și să-l ferească de mândrie,

18 ca să-i păzească sufletul de groapă

și viața de loviturile sabiei.

19 Și prin durere este mustrat omul în culcușul lui,

când o luptă necurmată îi frământă oasele.

20 Atunci îi este greață*Ps. 107:18. de pâine,

chiar și de bucatele cele mai alese.

21 Carnea i se prăpădește și piere,

oasele care nu i se vedeau rămân goale;

22 sufletul i se apropie de groapă

și viața, de vestitorii morții.

23 Dar, dacă se găsește un înger mijlocitor pentru el,

unul din miile acelea care vestesc omului calea pe care trebuie s-o urmeze,

24 Dumnezeu Se îndură de el și zice îngerului:

‘Izbăvește-l, ca să nu se coboare în groapă;

am găsit un preț de răscumpărare pentru el!’

25 Și atunci carnea lui se face mai fragedă ca în copilărie,

se întoarce la zilele tinereții lui.

26 Se roagă lui Dumnezeu, și Dumnezeu îi este binevoitor,

îl lasă să-I vadă Fața cu bucurie

și-i dă înapoi nevinovăția.

27 Atunci, el cântă înaintea oamenilor și*2 Sam. 12:13.Prov. 28:13.Luca 15:21.1 Ioan 1:9. zice:

‘Am păcătuit, am călcat dreptatea

și n-am fost*Rom. 6:21. pedepsit după faptele mele;

28 Dumnezeu mi-a izbăvit sufletul*Is. 38:17. ca să nu intre în groapă

și viața mea vede lumina!’

29 Iată, acestea le face Dumnezeu de două ori, de trei ori omului,

30 ca să-l ridice*Vers. 28.Ps. 56:13. din groapă,

ca să-l lumineze cu lumina celor vii.

31 Ia aminte, Iov, și ascultă-mă!

Taci, și voi vorbi!

32 Dacă ai ceva de spus, răspunde-mi!

Vorbește, căci aș vrea să-ți dau dreptate.

33 Dacă n-ai nimic de zis, ascultă-mă*Ps. 34:11.!

Taci, și te voi învăța înțelepciunea."
