1 Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and declare unto my people their transgression, and to the house of Jacob their sins.2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that doeth righteousness, and hath not forsaken the ordinance of their God; they ask of me the ordinances of righteousness, they take delight in approaching to God:3 -Wherefore have we fasted, and thou seest not; have afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find what pleaseth {you}, and exact all your labours.4 Behold, ye have fasted for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness; ye do not at present fast, to cause your voice to be heard on high.5 Is such the fast that I have chosen, a day for a man to afflict his soul, -that he should bow down his head as a bulrush, and spread sackcloth and ashes {under him}? Wilt thou call this a fast, and a day acceptable to Jehovah?6 Is not this the fast which I have chosen: to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the thongs of the yoke, and to send forth free the crushed, and that ye break every yoke?7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring to thy house the needy wanderers; when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?8 Then shall thy light break forth as the dawn, and thy health shall spring forth speedily; and thy righteousness shall go before thee, the glory of Jehovah shall be thy rearguard.9 Then shalt thou call, and Jehovah will answer; thou shalt cry, and he will say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger and the unjust speech,10 and thou proffer thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul: then shall thy light rise in the darkness, and thine obscurity be as midday;11 and Jehovah will guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and strengthen thy bones; and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a water-spring, whose waters deceive not.12 And they {that come} of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations {that have remained} from generation to generation; and thou shalt be called, Repairer of the breaches, restorer of frequented paths.13 If thou turn back thy foot from the sabbath, {from} doing thy pleasure on my holy day, and call the sabbath a delight, the holy {day} of Jehovah, honourable; and thou honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking {idle} words;14 then shalt thou delight thyself in Jehovah, and I will cause thee to ride on the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of Jehovah hath spoken.

1 Roep uit die keel, hou nie terug nie, verhef jou stem soos 'n basuin! En verkondig aan my volk hulle oortreding en aan die huis van Jakob hulle sondes.2 Wel soek hulle My dag vir dag en het 'n behae in die kennis van my weë! Soos 'n nasie wat geregtigheid doen en die reg van sy God nie verlaat nie, vra hulle My na die regverdige verordeninge; hulle het 'n behae in die toenadering tot God.3 Waarom vas ons, en U sien dit nie? Waarom kwel ons ons siel, en U weet dit nie? -- Kyk, op die dag as julle vas, soek julle geleentheid om sake te doen, en julle jaag al jul arbeiders aan.4 Kyk, om te twis en te kyf, vas julle, en om te slaan met misdadige vuis; julle vas nie nou om julle stem in die hoogte te laat hoor nie.5 Is d¡t die vas wat Ek verkies, die dag as die mens sy siel gaan kwel: dat hy sy hoof buig soos 'n biesie en sak en as uitsprei om sy bed te wees? Noem jy dit vas en 'n dag wat die HERE welgevallig is?6 Is d¡t nie die vas wat Ek verkies nie: dat julle losmaak die bande van goddeloosheid, dat julle afhaal die stroppe van die juk en vry laat weggaan die verdruktes en elke juk stukkend breek?7 Is dit nie dat jy jou brood breek vir hom wat honger het, en ellendiges, swerwelinge in die huis inbring nie? As jy iemand sien wat naak is, dat jy hom klee, en jou vir jou eie vlees nie verberg nie?8 Dan sal jou lig deurbreek soos die dageraad en jou genesing skielik uitspruit; en jou geregtigheid sal voor jou uit gaan, die heerlikheid van die HERE jou agterhoede wees.9 Dan sal jy roep, en die HERE sal antwoord; jy sal skreeu om hulp, en Hy sal sê: Hier is Ek! As jy van jou verwyder die verdrukking, die uitsteek van die vinger en die leuenagtige woord,10 en jou siel laat uitgaan na die hongerige, en die neergeboë siel versadig; dan sal jou lig opgaan in die duisternis en jou donkerheid wees soos die middag.11 En die HERE sal jou gedurigdeur lei en jou siel versadig in dor plekke en jou gebeente sterk maak; en jy sal wees soos 'n tuin wat goed besproei is en soos 'n fontein van waters waarvan die water nooit teleurstel nie.12 En die wat uit jou voortkom, sal die ou puinhope bou; die fondamente van vorige geslagte sal jy oprig, en jy sal genoem word: Herbouer van gebreekte mure, hersteller van paaie, om bewoonbaar te maak.13 As jy jou voet terughou van die sabbat -- om nie jou sake op my heilige dag te doen nie, en as jy die sabbat 'n verlustiging noem en die heilige dag van die HERE hooghou; en as jy dit eer deur nie jou gewone gang te gaan nie, nie geleentheid vir jou sake soek of ydele taal spreek nie;14 dan sal jy jou verlustig in die HERE, en Ek sal jou laat ry oor die hoogtes van die aarde en jou laat geniet die erfdeel van jou vader Jakob; want die mond van die HERE het dit gespreek.
