1 Então Jó respondeu:
2 "Na verdade, vocês são o povo,
e com vocês morrerá a sabedoria.
3 Mas eu também tenho
entendimento;
em nada sou inferior a vocês.
Quem não sabe coisas como essas?
4 Eu sou motivo de riso
para os meus amigos —
eu, que invocava a Deus,
e ele me respondia;
o justo e o reto são motivo de riso.
5 No pensamento
de quem está seguro
há desprezo pela desgraça,
um empurrão para aquele
cujos pés já vacilam.
6 Os opressores têm paz
em suas tendas,
e os que provocam a Deus
estão seguros;
o deus deles é a sua própria força."
7 "Mas pergunte agora aos animais,
e cada um deles o ensinará;
pergunte às aves do céu,
e elas lhe contarão.
8 Ou fale com a terra,
e ela o instruirá;
até os peixes do mar lhe contarão.
9 De todos estes, quem não sabe
que a mão do Senhor fez isto?
10 Na sua mão está a vida
de todos os seres vivos
e o espírito de todo
o gênero humano.
11 Por acaso, o ouvido
não avalia as palavras,
assim como o paladar
prova as comidas?"
12 "Está a sabedoria com os idosos?
Será que a longevidade
traz o entendimento?
13 Com Deus estão a sabedoria
e a força;
ele tem conselho e entendimento.
14 O que ele derruba
não pode ser reconstruído;
se ele lança alguém na prisão,
ninguém a pode abrir.
15 Se ele retém as águas,
elas secam;
se ele as solta,
elas devastam a terra."
16 "Com ele estão a força
e a sabedoria;
a ele pertencem o enganado
e o enganador.
17 Ele leva os conselheiros embora,
descalços,
e faz os juízes de tolos.
18 Solta os laços
que prendem os reis
e amarra uma corda
aos seus lombos.
19 Ele leva os sacerdotes embora,
descalços,
e transtorna os poderosos.
20 Deixa os conselheiros
sem palavras
e tira o entendimento dos anciãos.
21 Lança desprezo
sobre os príncipes
e afrouxa o cinto dos fortes.
22 Das trevas revela
coisas profundas
e traz à luz a densa escuridão.
23 Deus engrandece as nações
e depois as destrói;
dispersa-as e de novo as congrega.
24 Tira o entendimento
dos chefes do povo da terra
e os faz vaguear pelos desertos
sem caminhos.
25 Nas trevas andam tateando,
sem terem luz;
ele os faz cambalear
como bêbados."
1 Then responded Job, and said:
2 Of a truth, ye, are the people, and, with you, wisdom, will die.
3 I also, have a mind like you, I, fall not short, of you, But who hath not such things as these?
4 A laughing-stock to ones neighbour, do I become, one who hath called upon GOD and he hath answered him! A laughing-stocka righteous man without blame!
5 For ruin, there is contempt, in the thought of the man at ease,ready, for such as are of faltering foot!
6 At peace are the tents that belong to the spoilers, and there is security to them who provoke GOD, To him who bringeth a god in his hand.
7 But, in very deed, ask, I pray thee, the beasts, and they will teach thee, and the bird of the heavens, and it will tell thee;
8 Or address the earth, and it will teach thee, and the fishes of the sea, will recount it to thee:
9 Who knoweth not, among all these, that, the hand of Yahweh, hath done this?
10 In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the spirit of all the flesh of men.
11 Doth not, the ear, try, words? even as, the palate, tasteth for itself, food?
12 In the Ancient, is wisdom, and Length of Days, understanding:
13 With Him, are wisdom and strength, to Him, pertain counsel and understanding.
14 Lo! He pulleth down, and it cannot be built, He closeth up over a man, and it cannot be opened:
15 Lo! He holdeth back the waters, and they dry up, or sendeth them out, and they transform the earth:
16 With Him, is strength and effective wisdom, to Him, belong he that erreth, and he that causeth to err.
17 Who leadeth away counsellors a spoil, and, judges, He befooleth:
18 The fetters of kings, He looseth, or hath bound a slaves waistcloth about their loins:
19 Who leadeth away priests a spoil, and, men firmly seated, He overturneth:
20 Setting aside the speech of the trusty, and, the discernment of elders, He taketh away:
21 Pouring contempt upon nobles, and, the girdle of the mighty, hath He loosed:
22 Laying open deep things, out of darkness, and bringing out to light, the death-shade:
23 Who giveth greatness to nations, or destroyeth them, Who spreadeth out nations, or leadeth them into exile:
24 Who taketh away the sense of the chiefs of the people of the earth, and hath caused them to wander in a pathless waste:
25 They grope about in the dark, having no light, and He hath made them to reel, like a drunken man.
