1 Έτσι ενεργεί όποιος τον Κύριο σέβεται. Όποιος το νόμο τον κατέχει, σοφία θα λάβει. 2 Αυτή σαν μάνα θα βγει να τον προϋπαντήσει και σαν παρθένα νύφη θα τον καλοδεχτεί. 3 Της φρονιμάδας το ψωμί θα τον ταΐσει και της σοφίας θα τον ποτίσει το νερό. 4 Ο ευσεβής απάνω της θα στηριχτεί και δε θα λυγίσει, θα συνδεθεί μαζί της και δε θα ντροπιαστεί. 5 Η σοφία θα τον υψώσει πάνω από τους συντρόφους του και μες στη σύναξη θα τον βοηθήσει να μιλήσει. 6 Χαρά θα λάβει κι αγαλλίασης διάδημα και φήμη αιώνια θ’ αποχτήσει.

7 Οι ανόητοι δεν θα την αποχτήσουν τη σοφία κι οι αμαρτωλοί δεν θα τη δουν. 8 Στέκεται αυτή μακριά απ’ την υπερηφάνεια κι οι ψεύτες ούτε που θα τη σκεφτούν. 9 Στου αμαρτωλού το στόμα ωραίος ύμνος δεν ταιριάζει, αφού απ’ τον Κύριο δεν του δόθηκε. 10 Γιατί κι ο ύμνος με σοφία θα λεχθεί, ο Κύριος θα τον κατευθύνει.

11 Μην πεις ότι ο Κύριος σ’ έκανε να αμαρτήσεις, γιατί αυτός δεν πράττει εκείνα που απεχθάνεται. 12 Μην πεις ότι αυτός σε παραπλάνησε, γιατί ο Κύριος δεν έχει καμιά ανάγκη τον αμαρτωλό. 13 Ο Κύριος μισεί όλες τις αισχρές πράξεις και δεν είναι καμιά απ’ αυτές αγαπητή σ’ εκείνους που τον σέβονται. 14 Αυτός απ’ την αρχή δημιούργησε τον άνθρωπο και στην εξουσία τον άφησε της βούλησής του. 15 Από τη θέλησή σου εξαρτάται να φυλάξεις τις εντολές· κι εκείνο που πιστεύεις για σωστό, αυτό να κάνεις. 16 Αυτός έβαλε μπρος σου τη φωτιά και το νερό· όπου θελήσεις θ’ απλώσεις το χέρι σου. 17 Μπροστά στον άνθρωπο είναι η ζωή κι ο θάνατος, κι όποιο απ’ αυτά θελήσει, θα του δοθεί. 18 Πράγματι, η σοφία του Κυρίου είναι απέραντη· όλα εκείνος τα μπορεί κι όλα τα βλέπει. 19 Στρέφει το βλέμμα του σ’ εκείνους που τον σέβονται, και ξέρει αυτός όλες τις πράξεις των ανθρώπων. 20 Σε κανέναν ο Κύριος δεν έδωσε εντολή να ’ναι ασεβής και κανενός δεν έδωσε την άδεια ν’ αμαρτάνει.

1 He that feareth the Lord will do good, and he that hath the knowledge of the law shall obtain her.

2 And as a mother shall she meet him, and receive him as a wife married of a virgin.

3 With the bread of understanding shall she feed him, and give him the water of wisdom to drink.

4 He shall be stayed upon her, and shall not be moved; and shall rely upon her, and shall not be confounded.

5 She shall exalt him above his neighbours, and in the midst of the congregation shall she open his mouth.

6 He shall find joy and a crown of gladness, and she shall cause him to inherit an everlasting name.

7 But foolish men shall not attain unto her, and sinners shall not see her.

8 For she is far from pride, and men that are liars cannot remember her.

9 Praise is not seemly in the mouth of a sinner, for it was not sent him of the Lord.

10 For praise shall be uttered in wisdom, and the Lord will prosper it.

11 Say not thou, It is through the Lord that I fell away: for thou oughtest not to do the things that he hateth.

12 Say not thou, He hath caused me to err: for he hath no need of the sinful man.

13 The Lord hateth all abomination; and they that fear God love it not.

14 He himself made man from the beginning, and left him in the hand of his counsel;

15 If thou wilt, to keep the commandments, and to perform acceptable faithfulness.

16 He hath set fire and water before thee: stretch forth thy hand unto whether thou wilt.

17 Before man is life and death; and whether him liketh shall be given him.

18 For the wisdom of the Lord is great, and he is mighty in power, and beholdeth all things:

19 And his eyes are upon them that fear him, and he knoweth every work of man.

20 He hath commanded no man to do wickedly, neither hath he given any man licence to sin.
