Provérbios 26

1 As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest; so honor is not seemly for a fool. Mint a hó a nyárhoz és az esõ az aratáshoz, úgy nem illik a bolondhoz a tisztesség.
2 As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come. Miképen a madár elmegy és a fecske elrepül, azonképen az ok nélkül való átok nem száll az emberre.
3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back. Ostor a lónak, fék a szamárnak; és vesszõ a bolondok hátának.
4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like him. Ne felelj meg a bolondnak az õ bolondsága szerint, hogy ne légy te is õ hozzá hasonlatos;
5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit. Felelj meg a bolondnak az õ bolondsága szerint, hogy ne legyen bölcs a maga szemei elõtt.
6 He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage. A ki bolond által izen valamit, lábait vagdalja el magának, és bosszúságot szenved.
7 The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools. [Mint] a sántának lábai lógnak, úgy a bölcsmondás a bolondoknak szájában.
8 As he that bindeth a stone in a sling, so is he that giveth honor to a fool. Mint a ki követ köt a parittyába, úgy [cselekszik,] a ki a bolondnak tisztességet tesz.
9 As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools. [Mint] a részeg ember kezébe akad a tövis, [úgy akad] az eszes mondás a bolondoknak szájába.
10 The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors. Mint a lövöldözõ, a ki mindent megsebez, olyan az, a ki bolondot fogad fel, és a ki csavargókat fogad fel.
11 As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly. Mint az eb megtér a maga okádására, úgy a bolond megkettõzteti az õ bolondságát.
12 Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him. Láttál-é oly embert, a ki a maga szemei elõtt bölcs? A bolond felõl [jobb] reménységed legyen, hogynem mint a felõl!
13 The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. Azt mondja a rest: ordító [oroszlán] van az úton! oroszlán van az utczákon!
14 As the door turneth upon its hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed. [Mint] az ajtó forog az õ sarkán, úgy a rest az õ ágyában.
15 The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth. Ha a rest az õ kezét a tálba nyujtotta, resteli azt csak szájához is vinni.
16 The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason. Bölcsebb a rest a maga szemei elõtt, mint hét olyan, a ki okos feleletet ád.
17 He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears. Kóbor ebet ragad fülön, a ki felháborodik a perpatvaron, a mely õt nem illeti.
18 As a mad man who casteth fire-brands, arrows, and death, Mint a balga, a ki tüzet, nyilakat és halálos szerszámokat lövöldöz,
19 So is the man that deceiveth his neighbor, and saith, Am not I in sport? Olyan [az], a ki megcsalja az õ felebarátját, és azt mondja: csak tréfáltam!
20 Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no tale-bearer, the strife ceaseth. Ha a fa elfogy, kialuszik a tûz; ha nincs súsárló, megszûnik a háborgás.
21 As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife. Mint az elevenszénre a holtszén, és a fa a tûzre, [olyan] a háborúságszerzõ ember a patvarkodásnak felgyujtására.
22 The words of a tale-bearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly. A fondorlónak beszédei hízelkedõk, és azok áthatják a szív belsejét.
23 Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross. [Mint] a meg nem tisztított ezüst, melylyel valami agyagedényt beborítottak, [olyanok] a gyulasztó ajkak a gonosz szív mellett.
24 He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him; Az õ beszédeivel másnak tetteti magát a gyûlölõ, holott az õ szívében gondol álnokságot.
25 When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart. Mikor kedvesen szól, ne bízzál õ hozzá; mert hét iszonyatosság van szívében.
26 Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shown before the whole congregation. Elfedeztethetik a gyûlölség csalással; de nyilvánvalóvá lesz az õ gonoszsága a gyülekezetben.
27 Whoever diggeth a pit shall fall into it: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him. A ki vermet ás [másnak], abba belé esik; és a ki felhengeríti a követ, arra gurul vissza.
28 A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin. A hazug nyelv gyûlöli az általa megrontott [embert], és a hízelkedõ száj romlást szerez.
