Provérbios 14

1 Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands. A bölcs asszony építi a maga házát; a bolond pedig önkezével rontja el azt.
2 He that walketh in his uprightness feareth the LORD: but he that is perverse in his ways despiseth him. A ki igazán jár, féli az Urat; a ki pedig elfordult az õ útaiban, megútálja õt.
3 In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them. A bolondnak szájában van kevélységnek pálczája; a bölcseknek pedig beszéde megtartja õket.
4 Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox. Mikor nincsenek ökrök: tiszta a jászol; a gabonának bõsége pedig az ökörnek erejétõl van.
5 A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies. A hûséges tanú nem hazud; a hamis tanú pedig hazugságot bocsát szájából.
6 A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy to him that understandeth. A csúfoló keresi a bölcseséget, és nincs; a tudomány pedig az eszesnek könnyû.
7 Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge. Menj el a bolond férfiú elõl; és nem ismerted meg a tudománynak beszédét.
8 The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit. Az eszesnek bölcsesége az õ útának megértése; a bolondoknak pedig bolondsága csalás.
9 Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favor. A bolondokat megcsúfolja a bûnért való áldozat; az igazak között pedig jóakarat van.
10 The heart knoweth its own bitterness; and a stranger doth not intermeddle with its joy. A szív tudja az õ lelke keserûségét; és az õ örömében az idegen nem részes.
11 The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tabernacle of the upright shall flourish. Az istenteleneknek háza elvész; de az igazaknak sátora megvirágzik.
12 There is a way which seemeth right to a man, but the end of it are the ways of death. Van olyan út, [mely] helyesnek látszik az ember elõtt, és vége a halálra menõ út.
13 Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness. Nevetés közben is fáj a szív; és végre az öröm fordul szomorúságra.
14 The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself. Az õ útaiból elégszik meg az elfordult elméjû; önmagából pedig a jó férfiú.
15 The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going. Az együgyû hisz minden dolognak; az eszes pedig a maga járására vigyáz.
16 A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident. A bölcs félvén, eltávozik a gonosztól; a bolond pedig dühöngõ és elbizakodott.
17 He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated. A hirtelen haragú bolondságot cselekszik, és a cselszövõ férfi gyûlölséges lesz.
18 The simple inherit folly: but the prudent are crowned with knowledge. Bírják az esztelenek a bolondságot örökség szerint; az eszesek pedig fonják a tudománynak koszorúját.
19 The evil bow before the good; and the wicked at the gates of the righteous. Meghajtják magokat a gonoszok a jók elõtt, és a hamisak az igaznak kapujánál.
20 The poor is hated even by his own neighbor: but the rich hath many friends. Még az õ felebarátjánál is útálatos a szegény; a gazdagnak pedig sok a barátja.
21 He that despiseth his neighbor sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he. A ki megútálja az õ felebarátját, vétkezik; a ki pedig a szegényekkel kegyelmességet cselekszik, boldog az!
22 Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth shall be to them that devise good. Nemde tévelyegnek, a kik gonoszt szereznek? kegyelmesség pedig és igazság a jó szerzõknek.
23 In all labor there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury. Minden munkából nyereség lesz; de az ajkaknak beszédébõl csak szûkölködés.
24 The crown of the wise is their riches: but the foolishness of fools is folly. A bölcseknek ékességök az õ gazdagságuk; a tudatlanok bolondsága [pedig csak] bolondság.
25 A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies. Lelkeket szabadít meg az igaz bizonyság; hazugságokat szól pedig az álnok.
26 In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge. Az Úrnak félelmében erõs a bizodalom, és az õ fiainak lesz menedéke.
27 The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death. Az Úrnak félelme az életnek kútfeje, a halál tõrének eltávoztatására.
28 In the multitude of people is the king's honor: but in the want of people is the destruction of the prince. A nép sokasága a király dicsõsége; a nép elfogyása pedig az uralkodó romlása.
29 He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly. A haragra késedelmes bõvelkedik értelemmel; a ki pedig elméjében hirtelenkedõ, bolondságot szerez az.
30 A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones. A szelíd szív a testnek élete; az irígység pedig a csontoknak rothadása.
31 He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoreth him hath mercy on the poor. A ki elnyomja a szegényt, gyalázattal illeti annak teremtõjét; az pedig tiszteli, a ki könyörül a szûkölködõn.
32 The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death. Az õ nyavalyájába ejti magát az istentelen; az igaznak pedig halála idején is reménysége van.
33 Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding: but that which is in the midst of fools is made known. Az eszesnek elméjében nyugszik a bölcseség; a mi pedig a tudatlanokban [van,] magát [hamar] megismerheti.
34 Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people. Az igazság felmagasztalja a nemzetet; a bûn pedig gyalázatára van a népeknek.
35 The king's favor is towards a wise servant: but his wrath is against him that causeth shame. A királynak jóakaratja van az eszes szolgához; haragja pedig a megszégyenítõhöz.
