| 4 | And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches. | És tudomány által telnek meg a kamarák minden drága és gyönyörûséges marhával. |
| 5 | A wise man is strong; and a man of knowledge increaseth strength. | A bölcs férfiú erõs, és a tudós ember nagy erejû. |
| 6 | For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counselors there is safety. | Mert az eszes tanácsokkal viselhetsz hadat hasznodra; és a megmaradás a tanácsosok sokasága által van. |
| 7 | Wisdom is too high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth in the gate. | Magas a bolondnak a bölcseség; a kapuban nem nyitja meg az õ száját. |
| 8 | He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person. | A ki azon gondolkodik, hogy gonoszt cselekedjék, azt cselszövõnek hívják. |
| 9 | The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men. | A balgatag dolognak gondolása bûn; és a rágalmazó az ember elõtt útálatos. |
| 10 | If thou faintest in the day of adversity, thy strength is small. | Ha lágyan viselted magadat a nyomorúságnak idején: szûk a te erõd. |
| 11 | If thou forbearest to deliver them that are drawn to death, and those that are ready to be slain; | Szabadítsd meg azokat, a kik a halálra vitetnek, és a kik a megöletésre tántorognak, tartóztasd meg! |
| 12 | If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and will not he render to every man according to his works? | Ha azt mondanád: ímé, nem tudtuk ezt; nemde, a ki vizsgálja az elméket, õ érti, és a ki õrzi a te lelkedet, õ tudja? és kinek-kinek az õ cselekedetei szerint fizet. |
| 13 | My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honey-comb, which is sweet to thy taste: | Egyél, fiam, mézet, mert jó; és a színméz édes a te ínyednek. |
| 14 | So shall the knowledge of wisdom be to thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off. | Ilyennek ismerd a bölcseséget a te lelkedre nézve: ha azt megtalálod, akkor lesz jó véged, és a te reménységed el nem vész! |
| 15 | Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; destroy not his resting-place: | Ne leselkedjél, oh te istentelen, az igaznak háza ellen, ne pusztítsd el az õ ágyasházát! |
| 16 | For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief. | Mert ha hétszer elesik is az igaz, ugyan felkél azért; az istentelenek pedig [csak egy] nyavalyával is elvesznek. |
| 17 | Rejoice not when thy enemy falleth, and let not thy heart be glad when he stumbleth: | Mikor elesik a te ellenséged: ne örülj; és mikor megütközik: ne vígadjon a te szíved, |
| 18 | Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him. | Hogy az Úr meg ne lássa és gonosz ne legyen szemeiben, és el ne fordítsa arról az õ haragját [te reád.] |
| 19 | Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked; | Ne gerjedj haragra a gonosztevõk ellen, ne irígykedjél az istentelenekre; |
| 20 | For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be extinguished. | Mert a gonosznak nem lesz [jó] vége, az istentelenek szövétneke kialszik. |
| 21 | My son, fear thou the LORD and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change: | Féld az Urat, fiam, és a királyt; a pártütõk közé ne elegyedjél. |
| 22 | For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both? | Mert hirtelenséggel feltámad az õ nyomorúságok, és e két rendbeliek büntetését ki tudja? |
| 23 | These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment. | Ezek is a bölcsek [szavai.] Személyt válogatni az ítéletben nem jó. |
| 24 | He that saith to the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him: | A ki azt mondja az istentelennek: igaz vagy, ezt megátkozzák a népek, megútálják a nemzetek. |
| 25 | But to them that rebuke him shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them. | A kik pedig megfeddik [a bûnöst,] azoknak gyönyörûségökre lesz, és jó áldás száll reájok! |
| 26 | Every man shall kiss his lips that giveth a right answer. | Ajkakat csókolgat az, a ki igaz beszédeket felel. |
| 27 | Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thy house. | Szerezd el kivül a te dolgodat, és készíts elõ a te mezõdben; annakutána építsd a házadat. |
| 28 | Be not a witness against thy neighbor without cause; and deceive not with thy lips. | Ne légy bizonyság ok nélkül a te felebarátod ellen; avagy ámítanál-é [valakit] a te ajkaiddal? |
| 29 | Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work. | Ne mondd ezt: a miképen cselekedett én velem, úgy cselekszem õ vele; megfizetek az embernek az õ cselekedete szerint. |
| 30 | I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; | A rest embernek mezejénél elmenék, és az esztelennek szõleje mellett. |
| 31 | And lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face of it, and its stone wall was broken down. | És ímé, mindenütt felverte a tövis, és színét elfedte a gyom; és kõgyepüje elromlott vala. |
| 32 | Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction. | Melyet én látván gondolkodám, és nézvén, [ezt] a tanulságot vevém abból: |
| 33 | Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: | Egy kis álom, egy kis szunynyadás, egy kis kézösszetevés az alvásra, |
| 34 | So shall thy poverty come as one that traveleth; and thy want as an armed man. | És így jõ el, mint az útonjáró, a te szegénységed, és a te szükséged, mint a paizsos férfiú. |
