1 Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious adornment, which is on the head of the fat valley of them that are overcome with wine. 2 Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, as a storm of hail and a destroying tempest; as a storm of mighty waters overflowing, shall he cast down to the earth with might. 3 The crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim shall be trodden under feet; 4 and the fading flower of his glorious adornment which is on the head of the fat valley shall be like an early fig before the summer: as soon as he that seeth it perceiveth it, scarcely is it in his hand, he swalloweth it down. 5 In that day will Jehovah of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the remnant of his people; 6 and for a spirit of judgment to him that sitteth in judgment, and for strength to them that turn the battle to the gate. 7 But these also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are they gone astray. The priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink; they are overpowered by wine, they are gone astray through strong drink; they have erred in vision, they have stumbled in judgment. 8 For all tables are full of filthy vomit, so that there is no more place.

9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand the report? Them that are weaned from the milk, withdrawn from the breasts? 10 For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, there a little. ... 11 For with stammering lips and a strange tongue will he speak to this people; 12 to whom he said, This is the rest: cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing. But they would not hear. 13 And the word of Jehovah was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little: that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

14 Therefore hear the word of Jehovah, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem. 15 For ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol have we made an agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us; for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves. 16 Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I lay for foundation in Zion a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner-stone, a sure foundation: he that trusteth shall not make haste. 17 And I will appoint judgment for a line, and righteousness for a plummet; and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding-place. 18 And your covenant with death shall be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, ye shall be trodden down by it. 19 As it passeth through it shall take you; for morning by morning shall it pass through, by day and by night; and it shall be terror only to understand the report. 20 For the bed is too short to stretch oneself on, and the covering too narrow when he would wrap himself in it. 21 For Jehovah will rise up as on mount Perazim, he will be moved with anger as in the valley of Gibeon; that he may do his work, his strange work, and perform his act, his unwonted act. 22 Now therefore be ye not scorners, lest your bonds be made strong; for I have heard from the Lord Jehovah of hosts a consumption, and one determined, upon the whole land.

23 Give ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech. 24 Doth the ploughman plough all day to sow? Is he all day opening and breaking the clods of his land? 25 Doth he not, when he hath levelled the face thereof, cast abroad dill, and scatter cummin, and set the wheat in rows, and the barley in an appointed place, and the rye in its border? 26 His God*GodHebrew: Elohim doth instruct him in his judgment, he doth teach him. 27 For the dill is not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart-wheel turned about upon the cummin; but dill is beaten out with a staff, and cummin with a rod. 28 Bread corn is crushed, because he will not ever be threshing it; and if he drove the wheels of his cart and his horses over it, he would not crush it. 29 This also cometh forth from Jehovah of hosts; he is wonderful in counsel, great in wisdom.

1 Vai*Vers. 3. de cununa îngâmfată a bețivilor lui Efraim, de floarea veștejită, care este strălucirea*Vers. 4. podoabei sale, pe culmea văii mănoase a celor ce se îmbată! 2 Iată că vine de la Domnul un om tare și puternic, ca*Cap. 30:30.Ezec. 13:11. o furtună de piatră, ca o vijelie nimicitoare, ca o rupere de nori cu mari șuvoaie de ape, care o doboară cu putere la pământ. 3 Va fi călcată în picioare cununa*Vers. 1. îngâmfată a bețivilor lui Efraim; 4 și floarea veștejită, care este strălucirea*Vers. 1. podoabei ei pe culmea văii mănoase, va fi ca o smochină timpurie, care se vede înainte de culesul roadelor și pe care abia o iei în mână și îndată o și înghiți. 5 În ziua aceea, Domnul oștirilor va fi o cunună strălucitoare și o podoabă măreață pentru rămășița poporului 6 sau un duh de dreptate pentru cel ce șade pe scaunul de judecată și o putere pentru cei ce dau pe vrăjmaș înapoi până la porțile lui. 7 Dar și ei se*Prov. 20:1.Osea 4:11. clatină de vin și băuturile tari îi amețesc; preoți*Cap. 56:10,12. și proroci sunt îmbătați de băuturi tari, sunt stăpâniți de vin, au amețeli din pricina băuturilor tari; se clatină când prorocesc, se poticnesc când judecă. 8 Toate mesele sunt pline de vărsături murdare și nu mai este niciun loc curat. 9 Ei zic: „Pe*Ier. 6:10. cine vrea el să învețe înțelepciunea? Cui vrea să dea învățături? Unor copii înțărcați de curând, luați de la țâță? 10 Căci dă învățătură peste învățătură, învățătură peste învățătură, poruncă peste poruncă, poruncă peste poruncă, puțin aici, puțin acolo." 11 Ei bine! Prin niște oameni cu buze*1 Cor. 14:21. bâlbâitoare și cu vorbirea străină va vorbi poporului acestuia Domnul. 12 El îi zicea: „Iată odihna! Lăsați pe cel ostenit să se odihnească! Iată locul de odihnă!" Dar ei n-au vrut să asculte, 13 și pentru ei Cuvântul Domnului va fi: „Învățătură peste învățătură, învățătură peste învățătură, poruncă peste poruncă, poruncă peste poruncă, puțin aici, puțin acolo", ca, mergând, să cadă pe spate și să se zdrobească, să dea în laț și să fie prinși. 14 De aceea, ascultați Cuvântul Domnului, batjocoritorilor, care stăpâniți peste poporul acesta din Ierusalim! 15 Pentru că ziceți: „Noi am făcut un legământ cu moartea, am făcut o învoială cu Locuința morților: când va trece urgia apelor năvălitoare, nu ne va atinge, căci*Amos 2:4. avem ca loc de scăpare neadevărul și ca adăpost, minciuna!" 16 De aceea, așa vorbește Domnul Dumnezeu: „Iată, pun ca temelie în Sion o piatră*Gen. 49:24.Ps. 118:22.Mat. 21:42.Fapte 4:11.Rom. 9:33;10:11.Efes. 2:20.1 Pet. 2:6,7,8., o piatră încercată, o piatră de preț, piatră din capul unghiului clădirii, temelie puternică; cel ce o va lua ca sprijin nu se va grăbi să fugă. 17 Voi face din neprihănire o lege și din dreptate, o cumpănă, și grindina va surpa locul*Vers. 15. de scăpare al neadevărului și apele vor îneca adăpostul minciunii. 18 Așa că legământul vostru cu moartea va fi nimicit și învoiala voastră cu Locuința morților nu va dăinui. Când va trece urgia apelor năvălitoare, veți fi striviți de ea. 19 Ori de câte ori va trece, vă va apuca; căci va trece în toate diminețile, zi și noapte, și numai vuietul ei vă va îngrozi." 20 Patul va fi prea scurt ca să te întinzi în el și învelitoarea, prea îngustă ca să te învelești cu ea. 21 Căci Domnul Se va scula ca la muntele Perațim*2 Sam. 5:20.1 Cron. 14:11. și Se va mânia ca în valea Gabaonului*Ios. 10:10,12.2 Sam. 5:25.1 Cron. 14:16., ca să-Și facă lucrarea, lucrarea*Plâng. 3:33. Lui ciudată, ca să-Și împlinească lucrul, lucrul Lui nemaiauzit. 22 Acum, nu batjocoriți, ca nu cumva să vi se strângă mai tare legăturile, căci am aflat de la Domnul Dumnezeul oștirilor că nimicirea întregii țări este hotărâtă*Cap. 10:22,23.Dan. 9:27.. 23 Plecați-vă urechea și ascultați glasul meu! Fiți cu luare aminte și ascultați cuvântul meu! 24 Cel ce ară pentru semănătură ară oare necontenit? Necontenit își brăzdează și își grăpează el pământul? 25 Oare, după ce a netezit fața pământului, nu aruncă el măzăriche și seamănă chimen? Nu pune el grâul în rânduri, orzul, într-un loc deosebit și alacul, pe margini? 26 Dumnezeul lui l-a învățat să facă așa, El i-a dat aceste învățături. 27 Măzărichea nu se treieră cu leasa și roata carului nu trece peste chimen, ci măzărichea se bate cu bățul și chimenul, cu nuiaua. 28 Grâul se bate, dar nu se bate necontenit; împingi peste el roata carului și caii, dar nu-l sfărâmi. 29 Și lucrul acesta vine de la Domnul oștirilor; minunat*Ps. 92:5.Ier. 32:19. este planul Lui și mare este înțelepciunea Lui.
